@@shadiversity as a dragon in mortal disguise I'm unsubscribing! Jokes aside, that's an interesting Fantasy Armed (seeing as they don't have a traditional weapon, I doubt you could call it armed). What would intelligent dragons with the ability to shift into humanoid forms (like in WoW) do in combat? Use a bow midair? Shift into a smaller form to dodge ballistae shots? Etc, etc. Blizzard has only shown a dragon shifting in combat property once, when Wrathion used a dagger against a tentacly monster, so I feel like it hasn't been explored enough.
This seems essentially like what the Japanese did: Metatron argues that the pauldrons (the sode) on the o-yoroi are adapted shields. Turning the body sideways and tucking the head would be enough to deflect any blows that are chest level or higher, and the design of the sode maintains greater freedom of movement than a full-size shield with a strap (as well as having coverage on both sides of the body).
I thought the same, a quick Google search for "classic samurai armour" presented me several examples with rather sizeable sode. I can imagine that if you step forward and switch foot like Chad showed, you can simply present one as defence after each swing of the katana.
Games: "You can't use a spear with a shield." History: "Tell that to the phalanx." I recall back in the older editions of Dungeons & Dragons (and specifically AD&D, since that's the one I know), a shield only increased your Armor Class from either the front and side or the rear, depending on whether you were wielding it or wearing or across your back. Naturally, this led to character builds that carried two shields. On the other hand, 5th Edition gives the spear (and the quarterstaff, battleaxe, longsword, trident, and warhammer) the Versatile property, meaning it can be wielded with one hand (allowing use of a shield) or two hands (increasing the damage die).
One time a friend's paladin drank an unknown potion and grew a third arm from the middle of his chest. He eventually wielded 2 shields and his 3rd arm held a sword. 🤣
You have no idea how true this is Most developers, writers, directors etc just base themselves of off what other pop culture is doing and what is concidered acceptable when it comes to historical melee combat So if all there is is anime girls breakdancing with double greatswords, and that's what's concidered cool, that's all we're ever gona get Shad and other hema channels pushing realistic and/or historical principals into the mainstream is precisely how we're going to get better combat in our games and movies!
I just imagine Shad's neighbour pulling out a chair and some popcorn thinking: «What is he up today?» Shad: "Can you use two-handed weapons with a shield?" Him: "No way!"
When he first asked 'can you effectively use a 2-handed weapon with a shield?' at the beginning of the video, holding that sword, immediately I thought "not really, like that" and then he kept going " *including a spear* " ... me: "well, obviously, yeah, that's how like, every culture since the Bronze Age used spears in warfare" xD
Joe Benz Did Spartans brought pikes to an ancient spear fight? Maybe, but most didn’t. The Macedonians who carried 8m pikes & shields kinda left Sparta alone & decided to make all of Persia & Taxila part of Macedon.
In the middle ages foreign words were kind of translated, anglicized, italianized etc. And so London in italian became Londra, and Roma became Rome in english. So it's possible that "Pavese" is an anglicised word of italian origin, wich means that the word follows english grammar rules. If you really want to use italian grammar the plural is "pavesi".
Shad when you where using the kite shield with the two handed sword every time you raised your arms for a high strike or defense the shield rotated exposing your forward hip and leg. So that is something that someone using this technique would need to be aware of so that they can compensate for it.
TealWolf26 that reminds of a technique that some boxers use where they’ll hold one of Their hands in front of their opponents face to obscure their vision
Ok so the downside when using a two handed sword with a shield on you shoulder is that you can’t do certain moves right ? So that means just have like a shield on both shoulders
As someone who fights like this (re-enactment fighting, eastern and western style). It works fantastically well with long spears or hewing polearms (halberds, glaives, billhooks, etc.) but the long or great sword is to dependent on mobility for this to be practical with a real weighted shield. Also Shad needs longer or flexible straps on his shields.
In Dark Souls a greatsword is almost the size of an apartment building, how realistic can it be? Actually I’m so busy swinging the Fume Ultra Greatsword around that I forgot there were some of sensible size, never mind me.
I like that Dark Souls let's you do stupid shit like that. Want to equip a greatsword and a shield? Sure! Two shields? Why not! Neither is really viable, but the game isn't going to tell you that you can't.
I always just assumed it was a time-saving measure, not having to put a strap in games; render the physics, make sure there's no clipping, etc. Like how shields are still commonly worn on the back, but just sort of float there. Edit to add: Now y'gotta wear a shield on BOTH sides!
Thought about the shield shoulder strap in games: maybe they don't do it because typically in combat engines, the "socket" is in the hand or forearm. Attaching the shield to the shoulder via strap might be a combat designer's worst nightmare. Or maybe someone just hasn't tried. Because it would be really cool to play like that.
You can attach a shield anywhere in the body, but you have to make a new combat animation that simulates that the shield is attached there. But still you can see parts of the armor/weapon entering the body during normal animations or you can see the characters breathing wearing plate armor, even in modern games :/ It seems like its difficult(or the designers are just lazy)
Or you could do what I was thinking and have it just be an extra piece of armor adding to your passive defense rating. A lot lazier, a lot easier to implement into a pre existing system, like if I modded this into skyrim my route would be to just have it be like I described above, maybe with some kind of pyshics if I wanna be fancy about it and reduce clipping? If you were making a game from the ground up I could see it being just a custom set of animations allowing you to block and attack as you would ordinarily with one handed sword and held shield
It would have to be a fixed directional on the model. You could even make it a deadzone on the hurtbox if need be. Modern games do understand the way that shields work at least from a purely practical point of view. In Dark Souls for example you block forward, the mob in the front clangs off of it but the one angled on your side gets through because it was outside the coverage zone. Instead of anchoring it the arm it gets anchored to the side torso. Not impossible.
@@jackmcslay I second the basic japanese armour design, but it's called sode and intended for archers Cheaper japanese shields were made more like portable cover
@@thisstatementisfalsenothin5312 Yes you can. Either equip a shield in your weapon slot, or in DS3 you can just hold the two-hand button (Triangle or "Y" for consoles) and you'll swap to two-handing your off-hand weapon/tool.
"You can't have a two handed weapon with a shield !" **Genoese crossbowman laughter** Also 8:46 : the last thing you'll see before taking a spearhead to the face. Also also : Warhammer Fantasy, Lothern sea Guards with longbows, longshields and lances. I though "fantasy's fantasy", but both bow and lance work great in this setup !
I onto your game Shad. You're just making things up, then going back in time and paying medieval artists to paint fake images so you can support your future content with historical examples. Chech M8.
2 things: 1) I love the mutual support among different HEMA/History youtubers (Shad, Schola Gladiatora, Skallagrim, etc) 2) 1:49 that was nice swinging, Shad does have some skill!
Honestly D&D also allows the use of two handed weapons with shields..it's called the Versatile feature. Although you are giving up some damage in return for more defense.
The Dragon Quest games allow wizards to use a quarterstaff and a shield at the same time or warriors to use a longbow and shield at the same time with no penalty whatsoever. And most of its warriors just apply super strength to just treat all obviously-designed two handed weapons in a single hand anyway.

Shad Fact: Shad frequently practices his juggling with armed nuclear warheads. From our research none of them could actually hurt him I'd they did detonate, only make home stronger.
I can already see where this can go with videogames: "Two handed combat proficiency: you are quite the skilled two handed warrior. *+ 5 to attack when using two handed weapons.* " (This would be text for a certain skill down a leveling tree) "Passive defensive training: You have been trained in the arts of two handed combat, and have learned of a technique involving Shields, which requires a strapped shield. *Allows the usage of shields for two handed weapons.* "
Knowing Ubisoft, after watching this video, they will overcorrect in the next Assassin's Creed game and have the game only feature large shields and two-handed weapons.
A few points: 1) In the second medieval art that you show, the figure is holding his sword "at the short", or half-swording. A thing which you show briefly, and then spend the rest of your video showing cuts. 2) There is precedent for shield and spear LONG before the 15th c hunting scene that you show: the Argead (heavy) Hoplite (often incorrectly called the Phalangite). Not only was he carrying a spear in two hands and a shield, but that spear was a pike of quite extreme length.
@@elijahcastillo7679 Total change. You use your two-handed sword "at the short" or "half sword" when your situation is "Oh shit! I really need a spear, but all I have is this sword!" A sword can not cut through plate armor. Which is not to say that a man in plate armor is totally invulnerable, because specialty anti-armor weapons existed, like a pole-axe or a war-pick, or other things like that. But with a sword, the only way to injure an opponent armored in plate is to stab him (notice, I said "can not *cut* through plate), especially to stab in the joints of the armor: the inside of the wrist, the inside of the elbow, the armpit, and throat, the groin. In that situation, aim becomes the most important thing. You are trying to hit a target that is only a few inches across, on a moving body, that is trying to block and generally make you action difficult. To improve your aim, you take your left hand off of the handle of your sword, and grip the blade, and then you basically use the sword like a pool-cue; that is: aiming with your left hand, and providing the force with your right. In short, you use it as a spear.
@Tim McClennen that’s what I figured so I was really confused when shad used it like a sword rather than like a spear, which the artwork suggested. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to respond to me!
I hope you didn't press too hard for this, I know that if a player came to me and started badgering me to let them do OP nonsense in the name of realism, I would quickly get annoyed with them. I assume you've already settled this debate by now, but I'd personally recommend that you just say that there's a shield on your shoulder for flavor, there's no reason to pressure your GM into changing the rules if they don't want to.
@@Smashface_McBourbondick Frankly, I'm with you here. Game rules are complex enough without adding to them unnecessarily. Could even reflavor barbarian's unarmored defense to say it comes from training with a shield like that.
Have ye heard, mate? Word is, there is a new warrior guild in the City. They carry large shields and two-handed weapons into battle. I heard, the high ranking members are called "Mage Slayers" and are awarded enchanted shields, which hover around them freely, interjecting themselves between the warrior and incoming blows when needed, granting them greater freedom of movement. What do you think of these?
In Georgia (country) We had one king - Vakhtang I Gorgasal (442-502 A.D.) (Gorgasal was a nickname he got in fights from Persians meaning Wolf-headed - due to wolf faced helmet). We know from the folklore that he was very big man(having songs how mountains were shaking while he was marching), and had huge sword as the weapon of choice. After I got into history more (from UA-cam), now I am wondering, maybe he was indeed using something of a two-handed sword in one. He is my favorite King of ours, for his feats on the battlefield (as a tactician and deadly fighter), defeating enemies much numerous than us and for the bonus point he founded our capital Tbilisi!
@@justmonez Well I think that nothing is COMPLETELY correct in history, I don't believe he could shake mountains by stepping on them, small hills maybe...(:
"It's all right! The dragon is dead!" (angry Godzilla noises) Silly Shad... You though a powerful boss wouldn't have a second form, after the first one was defeated?
I don't know if this is already came up but one massive negative side would be if strong opponent gets on position to grab that shield. Strap around your neck and opponent pulls with force. That would leave you pretty exposed to his next attacks.
When you took the spear out with the tower shield over your arm, it reminded me of the how some asian armors had extra large shoulder/arm protection to be used like a shield
It is like that, though it more reminded me of the formation depicted on the Stele of the Vultures, especially when he had the shield over his right shoulder.
The kingdoms of ancient China and the European Renaissance era pikemen also used strapped shields. Here are some examples. The way that thou're just passively holding the two-handed sword at the begining while also holding the shield is more or less exactly how they have it animated in AC Valhalla when you have the one skill unlocked that allows yee to wield two two-handers, but when I used it, I used it in conjunction with a shield like how thou are here
My main concern with a setup like this is how closely the shield is being held to one's body. As Tod has demonstrated with his lockdown longbow, arrows shot from war bows can penetrate shields by 10+ cm. Meaning, incoming arrows are very likely to wound the shield bearer. Ditto for any other weapon that can strike with similar force.
Yeah, while it would still off some layered protection (you would likely have body armor as well), it doesn't seem to be worth the tradeoffs of awkward handling. I would say that carrying a shield would be interesting if you wanted to switch from one handed to two handed, or vice versa.
Yes but in this scenario not only would the arrow have to punch through the shield but also the armour said man at arms or Knight would be wearing. Not to mention even the slightest of angling can make all the differences. A trained combatant isn't going to present his shield dead flat towards the enemy position. Than we have all the environmental factors to consider. And at the end of the day you have to consider despite a bows potential to punch through shields they were still used. And many men made it through arrow volleys unharmed and undeterred.
@@clothar23 i don't think the men in front of a formation could have been unharmed else marshals wouldn't have fielded so many archers that they would employ crossbowmen from across the continent. what really mattered was that if the ranks are deep enough to replace the ones in front and if the morale is still high enough that the frontliners won't break formation and rout. armor was probably important when when there aren't as much frontline casualties, and the guys in the next rank would have some peace of mind for a little longer. i imagine that you could march forward with that shield-turned-porcupine and then discard it as soon as you engage in combat. it's not like the enemy archers would shoot at you with their own allies in the way. another thing to consider was that bow and arrows and crossbows and bolts probably weren't too effective earlier on, so shields could be still in use. but with a few advancements in tech, strategy, and tactics, they practically made ring mail ineffective. the following development of armor would have made shields redundant.
@@calvingreene90 not like that's the only alternative. the shield would still have a handle, and a warrior could just hold it out to catch arrow fire or deflect a heavy lance charge. if they have to fight while holding the shield, they can drop the two-handed weapon and bring out a side-arm. keeping the shield on your shoulder probably wouldn't have been ideal all the time due to the reasons mentioned above.
What a coincidence; I just started using a two handed sword and shield in my current skyrim playthrough, thanks to the Combat Gameplay Overhaul mod. Or is it a coincidence?.... I THINK.... yeah, probably is.
Everyone thinks a guy coming to fight a dragon with his fists is a fool, everyone who sees that guy throw away his sword and shield knows he's a legend
I'm honestly glad he touched on this topic, because I actually wanted to try this with an NPC bouncer in one of my campaigns in my TTRPG. I guy in question carries a tower shield and a longsword, but I never gave too much thought to how he'd use them both together or why
I have a friend that swings his two handed sword in one hand in nearly every two handed weapons tournament he enters. He's using the other hand to hold on to the half of the polearm of his opponent when ever he get into a clinch, and then proceeds to beat he crap out of them. Sure he's 204 cm tall and not lanky... :P
I don't think you mentioned it, but the Macedonian army under Alexander the Great did this with their infantry formations. they gave their men shields that hung around the shoulders and strapped to their forearm at the same time, freeing their shield hand to help hold onto a crazy long pike.
A buckler, despite what D&D tries to claim, is the opposite. A buckler has a single small handle in the center - basically a dedicated parrying and shield bash weapon. You dedicate your off hand to your buckler as you would a main-gauche or sword breaker or other secondary weapon in a dual wield build. The wrong definition of the word "buckle" came to mind when seeing the name and trying to think of game mechanics for it; it's not "a shield strapped to the forearm with a belt buckle" but "a shield used to buckle against blows".

Given that medieval artists tended to "show what they know", they tended to reflect current reality with equipment and clothes even when painting a scene set from earlier times or fantasy legends. So the dragon in the drawing isn't as big a deal. Just like now if you pictured Marines fighting a dragon, no reason you couldn't get the Marine gear correct.
@@RobKinneySouthpaw Yes, I remember late medieval artist drew a scene from greco-roman era battle and he geared the romans with full late medieval suit of armor. Pretty wtf but also badass. Imagine the look on the enemies faces when they see an entire Roman army cladded in late medieval plate.
The LARP Dagorhir Battle games allows shields hung as passive defense as well as those strapped to your arm, thus leaving the hand free to hold a weapon.
Given the weight of these shields you dont want it hanging just from your neck and flailing around your teeth in combat + risk of it getting stuck on something in critical moment and preventing you from moving seem bit too high to me.

I recall back in the older editions of Dungeons & Dragons (and specifically AD&D, since that's the one I know), a shield only increased your Armor Class from either the front and side or the rear, depending on whether you were wielding it or wearing or across your back. Naturally, this led to character builds that carried two shields.
On the other hand, 5th Edition gives the spear (and the quarterstaff, battleaxe, longsword, trident, and warhammer) the Versatile property, meaning it can be wielded with one hand (allowing use of a shield) or two hands (increasing the damage die).
using any of those weapons with a single hand usually lowers the dmg (at least that is how my dm runs it I dont know if that is the rule)

Dark souls is one handed with a shield doe
I like that Dark Souls let's you do stupid shit like that. Want to equip a greatsword and a shield? Sure! Two shields? Why not!
Neither is really viable, but the game isn't going to tell you that you can't.
Toasty_The_Ametuer you can also two hand one shield. (Honestly I love just using massive shield with reasonably sized greatsword.)
Toasty_The_Ametuer i’m guessing you didnt play dark souls much
I always just assumed it was a time-saving measure, not having to put a strap in games; render the physics, make sure there's no clipping, etc. Like how shields are still commonly worn on the back, but just sort of float there.
Edit to add: Now y'gotta wear a shield on BOTH sides!
That’s armor
Thought about the shield shoulder strap in games: maybe they don't do it because typically in combat engines, the "socket" is in the hand or forearm. Attaching the shield to the shoulder via strap might be a combat designer's worst nightmare. Or maybe someone just hasn't tried. Because it would be really cool to play like that.
Shield's functionality is poorly represented as is, imagine if they had to do this thing too
You can attach a shield anywhere in the body, but you have to make a new combat animation that simulates that the shield is attached there. But still you can see parts of the armor/weapon entering the body during normal animations or you can see the characters breathing wearing plate armor, even in modern games :/
It seems like its difficult(or the designers are just lazy)
The simplest workaround is that the shield is part of the armour.

Actually the Persian immortals were trained with pretty much every weapons possible, including long spear with a shield.
A few points:
1) In the second medieval art that you show, the figure is holding his sword "at the short", or half-swording.
I’m unfamiliar with sword techniques, but would half sword if change the way it was used or would you still swing it around like shad did?
@@elijahcastillo7679 Total change. You use your two-handed sword "at the short" or "half sword" when your situation is "Oh shit! I really need a spear, but all I have is this sword!"
A sword can not cut through plate armor.

Everytime I need an answer to a question about writing a book, this guy always delivers!
The plural of "pavese" is "pavesi", the "i" is pronounced like one in "it".
as italian i confirm this
The way that thou're just passively holding the two-handed sword at the begining while also holding the shield is more or less exactly how they have it animated in AC Valhalla when you have the one skill unlocked that allows yee to wield two two-handers, but when I used it, I used it in conjunction with a shield like how thou are here
My main concern with a setup like this is how closely the shield is being held to one's body.
And this is worse that taking the blow without the shield. Really?
@@calvingreene90 not like that's the only alternative. the shield would still have a handle, and a warrior could just hold it out to catch arrow fire or deflect a heavy lance charge. if they have to fight while holding the shield, they can drop the two-handed weapon and bring out a side-arm.
keeping the shield on your shoulder probably wouldn't have been ideal all the time due to the reasons mentioned above.

"You mean, having a buckler?"
I prefer the shield glove
A buckler, despite what D&D tries to claim, is the opposite. A buckler has a single small handle in the center - basically a dedicated parrying and shield bash weapon. You dedicate your off hand to your buckler as you would a main-gauche or sword breaker or other secondary weapon in a dual wield build.
The wrong definition of the word "buckle" came to mind when seeing the name and trying to think of game mechanics for it; it's not "a shield strapped to the forearm with a belt buckle" but "a shield used to buckle against blows".

One that is large enough to provide cover but small enough not to impede mobility and range of motion could be particularly useful for missile infantries. Picture the WH40K Space Marines, with less steroids and replace the bolters with bow/crossbow/arquebus.
I'm developing a rpg video game and one of the characters does use big shields and big weapons simultaneously. This helps a lot with balancing those rules. Thanks!
Shad: "If you see it in medieval artwork that's historical evidence"
Me: [Sees the weird demon thingy in the same piece of art] 😳😳😳😳😳
Lol, I was thinking that too. I was glad to see the later artwork without the dragons
Guess what they called dinosaurs before the word 'dinosaur' came around
I know this is a HUMOUR * fancy british accents*. But for the peasants who blindly believe every artists know not of what they draw..... Be EDUCATED.
IF I WAS A BAD DEMOMAN, I WOULDN'T BE 'ERE, DISCUSSIN' IT WIT YA!!!
Doesn't Demo use a onehanded shield like how the Chargin Targe is a Targe and the Splendid Shield is a buckler?
That's a really good point, Demo has his shield strapped onto his arm. I didn't think about that
The LARP Dagorhir Battle games allows shields hung as passive defense as well as those strapped to your arm, thus leaving the hand free to hold a weapon.
I really want to see a testing of this between real reenacters
Given the weight of these shields you dont want it hanging just from your neck and flailing around your teeth in combat + risk of it getting stuck on something in critical moment and preventing you from moving seem bit too high to me.
Imperum Draconis perhaps after adjusting the setup to be safer and more practical?
@@the24thcolossusjustchillin39 maybe, but it is still dead weight. In my experience it is pain in the ass just to march with it - you will kick it with your knee, it bobs around...
most comfortable for me is carry it ready in hand, or on strapped on top of backpack :)
Imperum Draconis to each their own I suppose. I’ve never really tried handling actual swords and shields, so My ramblings probably hold little weight
@@allgoodnamestaken123 agreed totally, but I still want to see somebody trying it
why is shad looking like a chaos warrior? Red and black armor, huge sword, shield with an 8 pointed star on it...
Heresy!!!

Shad, Champion of Khorne
Fun fact: in Elder Scrolls: Morrowind you CAN wield a shield with two handed weapons. It doesn't show visually, but the shield's stats are present in combat.
That does sound more like a bug than a feature. Still neat though; I didn't know that.
I'm just thinking about it and well imagine wearing one shield on one shoulder one on the other and one protecting the back. If ya really want you could fully embrace the chestnut and put one on top too.
Nobody show Shad anything Gundam, he'd be furious that the Zaku mounts shoulder shields, and go down in droves usually.
it's called armor
@@nicecube9082 Aye, but imagine the protection of wearing shields over armor.
two armors?
@@nicecube9082 We've got one armor, yes. But what about second armor?
