Diving is no easy task, as you can easily get tired while swimming (trust me, went for a long swim a while ago and it was tiring) for long periods of time, and if Nate has been going on many diving exhibitions during the 3 year-gap from Uncharted 3-Uncharted 4, then he’s certainly keeping in shape. Plus, analyse his physique. He’s more buffed in Uncharted 4 than he is in the prior games (even Sam notes this and says how Nathan was learner the last time they saw each other), and he even returns to treasure hunting with some more advanced fighting moves. Plus, he was still traversing environments, bodying mercenaries, solving elaborate puzzles, scaling walls, etc. as good if not better than he did in the prior games, so I doubt retirement was a factor in any way shape or form, especially since Sully sometimes comments on how Nate got better with age. Plus, a 3 year long retirement doesn’t excuse someone’s experience in combat, especially if you have 2-3 decades worth of experience like Nate. Why else do you think professional boxers are still excellent at boxing even after being in retirement for 10 years?

That's just the mechanics not being that refined. Uncharted 4 heavily improved on that.
