Thank you for your story. I started my classes in September and still feel lost and felt like I was being too slow. I live in the Cleveland area and I have a partner and we are trying to start this business. He feels like I'm not serious enough but I explained to him, I don't know the ins and out of a home like he does. I will try to reach out to you and hopefully you can help.

How or who does your marketing ? In New York we constantly have to be marketing to Brokers/Realators for business. Which is time consuming and expensive. I have one employee and myself.
Also do your inspectors get paid a % of each inspection they do or a salary? Do you have any issues maintaining them in the winter months when things slow down? Thanks
Marketing takes awhile for sure - most home inspectors at least start off trying to market to Realtors but it is pretty difficult to capture Realtors simply by marketing to them - I've tried every possible way you can imagine over the years to get in front of Realtors - at the end of the day I think the best way to capture a new Realtor to your business is to perform a thorough inspection for a client in front of a new Realtor so they can witness your process and add you to their list - but which comes first the chicken or the egg? In my early days I would offer free inspections to buyers via realtors I marketed to just to get infront of a new realtor and hopefully get them to refer me for a paid inspection....some of my inspectors are W2 + bonus and other inspectors are 50/50 1099 split with me. The 50/50 guys perform more inspections and are more profitable for me because they are motivated to go out and market themselves vs my W2 guys who don't have that pressure - I like starting new inspectors W2 or salaried while they are learning the business and getting experience so that in a couple/few years they are effective enough in the field to attract new realtors to them who don't know me by virtue of their inspection process. Winter months are the slow down period for alot of us so business typically drops in half so you have to make hay while the sun is shining and hunker down when its snowing for sure.

I’m a licensed inspector since 2016 and in the process of buying an existing franchise ( Pillar to post ) which I’ve worked for a couple years now. It’s been in business for about 10 years and the owners is getting out. I’m looking to grow it from 3 inspectors to around 5-7.

Do you recommend to learn the business first before going on your own ?
If you learn the business by becoming an employee of anther inspection company you will be expected to sign a non-compete agreement with them - which makes it difficult to then go out on your own in their/your local market. So most independent home inspectors get their start by first learning about the industry on-line and then taking a deeper dive by visiting local inspector association meetings.
Im definitely interested in becoming a home inspector and starting a LLC. This could be a perfect opportunity to produce jobs for my family and friends struggling in this time... thank you for the jewels youre dropping.
If you make $300k a year, why try to sell stuff on UA-cam to an incredibly small audience? Seems like it would be a point of diminishing returns for the few thousand you get out of it.
Because the $300K is now passive income and I’m not ready to retire yet so my goal is to create another business from scratch and scale it beyond the first one - yes this is a niche market but there are only a handful of consultants that are in it - one of my goals with this channel is to hold an on site seminar for new and or existing inspectors - but who knows, this may end up going nowhere but at least I tried and I’m sure I’ve helped the dozen or so people on this channel that have already reached out to me for advice.
