I am from Algemesi, one of the badly hit towns, but I live in London. Last time I spoke to my dad was on Tuesday night. It's Friday night right now and I haven't been able to talk to him as phone coverage has not been reestablished yet. I know he's doing fine as I could talk to some neighbors. The most outrageous bit is that it's been already 3 days and little to no military personnel has reached my hometown. We have more than 100,000 military people in Spain, and we know they are ready to help and waiting orders. Central Government has barely sent 2,000. The affected regions have a total population of 300,000. Nobody in the area understands the lack of response, we cannot explain it. Towns are still without electricity, water, and phone coverage, and it's been 3 full days. Central government blames regional government politicians and vice-versa as they are from different political parties.

I'm from Spain, I'll try to explain The autonomous goverment of the area can activate alert lvl 2, which they remain the control of the goverment of the area and ask the central goverment for resources, or ask the central goverment to activate alert lvl 3, so the central goverment will take control of the area, also in lvl 3 they can send the military under Defense Ministery The central goverment on their own, without the asking of the local autonomous goverment, can activate lvl 3 and take full control The local goverment from PP doesn't want to show incompetence, so they preferred to remain in control, and ask for help to the central goverment, which they haven't had until yesterday afternoon, first asking for 500 military, and today they have asked for another 500 military and for firefighters. The central goverment from PSOE doesn't want to take full control, so they don't have to take the fall nor they risk of being called dictators. So basically, the only military that was there for the first two day were the UME (Unit of Military Emergency) who works under the ask from Ministry of Interior, some Local Police and Civil guards, around 1,200 effectives, for an area of 550,000 people affected... Luckily today, over 72 after the flooding, there are over 5,000 effectives, but the Goverments should pay for what they have done.
It shows one thing: federalism does not work! Each province should have an emergency mechanism. If EU countries are able to use military airplanes to drop humanitarian aid in foreign countries, why can't they do it in their own countries?? These poor people had to walk 5 km to get some dirty water from a broken pipe. Indeed, your government will have a lot to answer for!
Sounds just like the ineptitude shown in the USA between State and Federal government administrations that led to the death of 1.4 million Americans during the COVID-19 epidemic.
I live in Madrid, when we had the snowstorm a few years ago the amount of time it took for the city to get back to normal was an outrage, and that was trees and ice. I fear that these places will be suffering for many weeks.
I live in Texas, USA! We got hit by a category 1 hurricane and it took they city of Houston nearly a month to get back on its feet mostly bc the wind tore the entire electrical infrastructure appart which was in terrible shape due to the corruption of an unregulated power industry which invested poorly on its infrastructure to maximize proffits. Then shortly after the storm, the city was hit by a heat wave for nearly a week of +100 Degree F and 90% humidity that lead to the death of many citizens all while the senator of Texas had left before the storm made landfall to ride it out in Cancun, Mexico with his family. The worst thing was the mosquitos though as they were agressive biters and the city didn't began spraying till weeks after the storm had passed.
Government is the source of all misery. It is gratifying to see the people helping themselves and others. Incredibly, in Hawaii, the command to first responders was to not help the islanders escape the fires. A pattern?
This is catestrophic. Where I live, North Carolina, we have whole towns and communities still struggling from the flooding of Hurricane Helene. No ONE expected a hurricane to hit the inland mountains- five hours from the nearest coastline- with flooding. Now people in Spain are being swept away in flooded suburbs.
Same thing happened to the People in NC, Tennessee ect...waiting for help that didn't come. Neighbors helping each other and bringing in supplies 😢 They are using Donkey chains, Horses to get aid into the People..not donating to the Red Cross
Sounds just like when it took the US national guard a week to bring water to the Superdome where the local goverment had advised citizens of New Orleans to go to ride out the storm.
We are able to drop humanitarian food off planes in foreign countries but when disaster strikes on our shores, victims cannot eat or drink and had to salvage what they could!! Despicable!
None of us expected this. We had alerts of heavy rain but this was so fast. No one could get into the areas. This area is an industrial estate with major stores including IKEA who helped as did many other stores. Army, police, search dogs, bombers went from our area and many other areas. It’s why I don’t watch MSM.
Why not worryivng about prevention? The mountain and hillslopes that were deforested decades ago have contributed to devastating floods. Don't blame climate change only.
As stated by some people, warning systems didn't fail. Politicians did. The same politicians that cancelled the financiation of the emergency response teams in Valenecia. Also, these politicians did nothing to try to avoid this. They just told everyone to just keep acting as normal, and issued calls for help and alerts, really late. Carlos Mazón is the president to thank for this. He also tweeted that the storm would be moving away from valencia, even when the forecast from the goverment didn't state the same. He later deleted that Tweet. I just hope this facts see the light and there are consecuences for this.

We live in a society where everything is instant and in a part of the world that doesn't see that many natural disasters. It does take time to organise and deploy have patience
That's why planning exists. In Madrid when we had the snowstorm, there was so obviously no coordinated response. The police, fit young people, were stopping people from throwing snowballs, because that is all they know how to do, clearing the ices was left to the street sweepers, many of whom are middle aged and many of whom are women.
A tragic event always exposes a government's weakness, in this case it may expose that Spain really does not have an effective military, or a military at all.
Shouldn't the central government activate a emergency and call in the military and such.. maybe they feel the floods is only affecting "a part of Spain" so its not a nation wide emergency..
It's more complicated than that, as the regional government needs to either request help from the national government or the national government can choose to impose their decisions, in which case the regional government will cause stir saying they've been overrun. Of course they are each from different political parties.
If the Spanish government can't help their people in such disaster why aren't they asking for help to neighboring countries? Why are they letting this happen?
Ask the question to the conservative PP political party, the "spanish tories" rule the Valencian goverment, and that regional goverment control the warning system
What a stupid comment. What kind of help? Not even a 0.1 percent of the resources available to the Spanish state have been mobilized/used. That's the problem.
The French Government offered help and the Interior minister, Marlaska refused it and said we don t need it! Yet days later, the Spanish government has done nothing. They have set up a meeting for Monday, 1 week after the disaster, while people have no water, no food, no clothes, no heating, no electricity... This is the Socialist Government of Pedro Sanchez...
Disponen de medios y personal suficiente, pero EL PRESIDENTE no da autorización. El ejército queria ayudar, pero sin autorización no pueden. Y los primeros 1200 enviados no tenian maquinaria ni se la mandaron. Todo por política.
