  • Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica. an album that came out in 1969. From outside of the music scene this album is only known for it's hard to listen to riffs and confusing sounds. Some people say that this could be the worst album ever made. But is it?
I've decided to spend a full day listening to Trout Mask Replica on repeat and take apart every song one by one and give my opinion on whether or not you should pick this up. Buckle up its a long one.

He has the musical dullness and curiosity of the typical neckbeard. No interest in learning any cultural context that doesn't exist beyond his own nose. No understanding of any musical forms that came before he existed and his taste ossified to what was cool when he was 15. You could cite Ornette Coleman to him and he'd still stare slack-jawed at his wikipedia page like I'm supposed to know about a jazz guy who started before my parents were born. Bruh.

    A few notes:
Zappa started reconding this album at Beefheart's house so as to create a "guerilla recording", but the Captain accused Frank of working on the cheap, so the band moved into a studio.
Beefheart hated the sound of the drum kit's cymbals, so he put pieces of cardboard over them which made a thumping noise whenever they were hit. Also, he didn't use headphones (surprised?) -- instead, he sang along with any sound leakage from the control room.
Zappa and Beefheart had an on again -- off again professional relationship years after TMR's release. But whether it be good or bad, look what we got out of it!

    • @Krunchtastic727
      @Krunchtastic727 5 місяців тому +2

There's more context here. The cardboard was initially put there because the neighbors complained about the loud cacophony that took 8 whole months to create. Eventually the cardboard sound just became the drum sound beefheart wanted.
I am a weird musician that loves weird music. I love beefheart. I am also a very patient person. I don't know if I could handle 8 months of this.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better review of this album from someone who is unfamiliar. Kudos!
I almost prematurely shit on this based on the “worst album ever made” agreement. I felt like I knew where this was headed. I didn’t. For someone new to the album and unfamiliar with the story/stories behind it, you actually gave a shit. And you didn’t immediately go with the usual “this isn’t even music”; you actually listened and treated is as art. This is one of my favorite albums, and I appreciate that you gave it (well, most of it; Hair Pie Bake 1&2 are two of my favorites) an honest listen. I appreciate that you gave it serious consideration even though it doesn’t sound conventionally pleasing. I swear: listen to it 10 more times and you will be a fan. And the first 5 times listen to the last half first. Change it up. Listening is kind of a chore, so listen starting in a different spot.
I also love the 4.7 star rating.
You know what I think you might really appreciate? The Audible version of the 33 1/3 Trout Mask Replica book. There’s a lot in the story behind the songs/album. (The story of The Blimp isn’t what you think, it’s great).
I really have to commend that you actually gave it an honest chance, which is rare. You even started hating and seemed worn out - which is so understandable with this album - and said, “This song makes me feel a little better!” Love it. this is a great review. Thanks and subbed. (and don’t let us olds get you down. Your musical taste is at the very least at the level of a 9 year old. Jk). I should also disclose that Zoot was my guitar teacher throughout high school and is one of the coolest humans on Earth.

"Pachuco Cadaver" is a low rider, so named because Mexican expatriates would take the corpses of cars and create new automotive creations, and also because the grill and headlights of some resembled a skull. What he's describing throughout are the elaborate paint jobs and decorative additions. Yellow Jackets and Red Devils were downers commonly used recreationally.

Personally one of my favorite albums for an odd reason. It is this, it's NOT an album, it's a three dimensional sculpture. Beefheart was a sculptor, this was most likely his preferred medium. Sound sculpting is the TL:DR. Much like how The Residents were particularly based in textures. I also always found his friendly rivalry with Frank Zappa to be fun. Zappa actually produced and made a cameo appearance on Trout Mask Replica. Him and Beefheart knew each other in school and would exchange records.

  • @Grithron2
    @Grithron2 5 років тому +37

OK, brace yourself, here come my comments on Garrett's comments.
Dust Blows is probably about camping holidays and outdoor sex. Hair Pie #1 - those who find it a challenge on the album should refer to the Grow Fins box set, where you get an extra two minutes of horn action before the band comes in! Bill's Corpse - Bill is either Harkleroad or a goldfish, but the song is more a prophecy of an America-induced catastrophe (nuclear war probably), in which case the symbolic "lady" is the Statue of Liberty (a recurring image in Beefheart's lyric). Neon Meate is a sex song - but you wouldn't necessarily know that on first listen. The "organ"-like sound is Don soloing on simran horn, through a leslie amplifier. At the end he adds another solo line on musette (basically the same horn, from another country). My Human Gets Me Blues - I don't know where Garrett gets the trans woman interpretation from (surely that's Big Joan!). China Pig - I'm pretty sure there are two "pigs" in the song, a real one and a piggy bank, both of which must-needs be "sacrificed". The Grow Fins box set puts it into context. Dali's Car, either the first or secondthing Don wrote on piano. Please note John French was the arranger/editor (not Jeff Cotton). Pena is one of a cycle of poems also including The Blimp and Hey Garland (recorded much later). Don is the backing-screamer (similar screams can be heard in other places). Well is chanted in the style of a work-song or an Icelandic Edda, and it might be about a dying man's hallucination. Big Joan, see my comment above - mismatched hands are a trope associated with post-op transsexuals, and there's the "is she a boy?". Reputation-making soprano solos here. Rockette Morton ran on beans because that was his subsistence diet, with the usual side-effects! Fallin' Ditch is another feeling-suicidal song. Sugar & Spikes obviously predates the rest of the material, and might even be one of those uncredited Herb Bermann co-write. Naturally I'm one of the people who love those polyrhythms near the end. Ant Man Bee is another song where we believe Mr Bermann has some input into the lyrics. Should clarify - a few chords on the two horns, then a solo on each. Orange Clawhammer - see other UA-cam pages for my theory as to is-the-girl-his-daughter-or-not. Wild Life is a favorite of many people: persecuted person empathises with bears more than people, thinks he can go the way of "grizzly-man" and not get eaten. More ace soprano work. Too Much For Mirror is probably likening cocaine to a devilish-woman (and is the first of a few Beefheart songs where he relies on Van Morrison's trademark descending riffs). Hobo Chang Ba - that vocal tone was indeed imitating a real acquaintance. The real questions are why does Bill blow about three notes on flute, and of course why are there twenty sets of sleighbells on it? (You know that story, I'm sure). The Blimp - whatever you may have heard, it's not about the Hindenberg disaster. The title character is a blimp-bodied sex-demon character (a winged zomby-woof maybe!) and the drazy-hoops are his groupies. Don always said Frank looked like a fly. Steal SOftly is one of the first things Don wrote for the album. Another fine ecological lyric, for those paying attention. Old Fart - apparently Don didn't want to record this poem but Frank insisted he should. Veterans Day - another early composition: the narrator is stated to be female, not male! Boogie-interlude added for Jeff Cotton's benefit, and it's not a cross-fade into the slow part, that was done in real time.
As you can tell, I've chosen to treat that "worst album" headline as a joke. The album scored very well in public surveys (not just critics' surveys!) of the finest albums of the twentieth century.

Thank you so much for your comment Grithron you have given me new ways to think about TMR! Before I wanted to make this review I only heard Frownland and I told myself I would save myself till I found myself a physical copy. The day I got it I was so ecstatic I listened to I one time In my house and my mind was blown. The next day was the only time I had off from work for a while so I was full on set to getting this review underway
Now I didn't want to base this on one listen alone because I knew how complex this would be so I listened to it 10 times (In one day) and around the 5th time I would look up theories for what each song means for each viewing afterward and the last one come up with my own meanings and theories. After the 10th time, I watched an Interview with Drumbo and reviews of the whole album from all over the web then turned the camera on and gave my thoughts.
I for one love this album and the story and the ideas that it paints in your mind. The dedication from every single one of the band members is nothing but awe-inspiring. I kept the "Worst Album of all Time" title cause people who haven't heard it all the way or only heard about it through hearsay usually think about it as the worst since it's so different from the collective norm. When I knew nothing about the album that's how I looked it up.
I made the video to show people who have never heard it before and are interested in it. I wanted to show them that this album this is good and you should hear it.
My biggest mistake with this video was I didn't do nearly enough research and listening to any album 10 times in a row is not doing it a service. you need time to digest what you heard and come back in a day and see what you think with a fresh perspective My perspective at the time was I've spent 12 hours listening to the same thing and about 4 hours doing research and writing the script. After all that then I spend another 3 hours filming the review. That's too much at one time and songs like Pachuco Cadaver, Wildlife, and others on the set didn't get fair shakes. This was my first time doing a music review so maybe after I get more experience under my belt I'll revisit Captain''s work again just with a keener eye. Thanks for sharing Grithon : )

"My Human Gets Me Blues" was initially written as a mockery of Drumbo/John French's fascination with religion by equating it with the persecution of LGBT people - it and "Bill's Corpse" were written as pieces of intimidate members of the band into complying with Don's strict orders to stay at his house and rehearse the album from back to front - which does lend credence to the idea of it being about a trans woman.

This album works really well as comedy, as the songs are often so stupid its hilarious. I personally really like this album, and I think its a masterpiece for avant-garde and music that's a big middle finger to the norm, and it does so without it being completely outlandish and difficult to listen to. (This is in reference to the especially avant-garde stuff that have little to no conventional musical form or even musicality) I actually enjoyed this album when I first listened to it, but more so in an ironic way, as it was so entertaining. However, I unironically love this record. Its a unique experience and I wish more records would be like this, and be this good.

This album is #76 on the greatest albums according to AcclaimedMusic. That should show how it's acclaimed.
I feel like Beefheart had to know how to do music right to know how to do it "wrong." He made it weird as possible so whether you love or hate it, you never forgot it.

Your review was cool. I liked the fact that you were open minded. And I enjoyed your personal reactions to the songs. You probably learned that music doesn't have to sound "nice" to be good or at least interesting. I had a piano teacher when I was 17 who didn't like dissonance and one day I ask her if she takes a walk in the park and listens to all the birds chirping does she really enjoy it? Of course she said yes. Then I asked her if we applied your beautiful bird sounds to musical instruments would it still be ok? She just looked at me like I was from Mars. I like many forms of music and one of them is Avant-Garde. If Avant-Garde music is a style that a person is drawn to, then Beefheart is the real deal. But it obviously isn't for everyone because people listen to music for different reasons. When I was in high school I became a big Zappa fan and soon discovered Beefheart. Trout Mask was the first recording I picked up and listened to with the drummer in our band. John French (Drumbo) became one of our favorite drummers. Couldn't believe the stuff he was coming up with. When I first heard the album, I thought that they were making up a lot of the songs on the spot. But found out that they transcribed and rehearsed everything to the point that they recorded it in like six hours. We went to a Beeefheart concert in Boston and they played the songs perfectly. I would recommend listening to some of the Magic Band's band members interviews with Samuel Andreyev. Interesting stuff. You might give a listen to The Spotlight Kid by Beefheart. I think you might really like that album.

If you enjoy the unhinged vocal performances and the cartoonish insanity of Pena, you HAVE TO listen to Caroliner Rainbow. Start with Rise Of The Common Woodpile, and please don't give up after the first track. Caroliner is/was one of the most genuinely bizarre bands ever, but also one of the most fun ones as far as insane avantgarde shit goes. This video tells me that you'd love them.
By the way, I stumbled upon your channel via your Orthrelm video; I clicked on it like "why would someone go out of their way to shit on such an obscure album?", and was pleasantly surprised to find that you actually got across the appeal of the music really well. It's like... benevolent clickbait.
I really enjoyed this video, off to watching the Shaggs one next.

HEY !! what happened to Moonlight on Vermont ??? Funny enough I first bought T.M.R. on CD way back in the mid 1980's. When I first was playing it I discovered that that beautiful riff you refer to in Veterans Day poppy was seamlessly blended to repeat itself in a continuous 25 to 30 second repeating loop, on and on and on it went indefinitely (due a printing error I guess), it was absolutely mesmerising and hauntingly beautiful. Unfortunately though I had my entire CD collection stolen pretty soon after this and lost this absolute freakish treasure .. boo hoo..

I prefer this album more not only every time I listen to it, but when I listen to other Captain Beefheart albums. I thought they'd all be like this, but they're much more accessible, so you can hear how much of an avant garde experiment this was. Never really heard people calling it the "worst" though, I've seen it in critical Top 100s.

TBH, I kinda dug some of these tracks on here. I looked up the band and it turns out Frank Zappa produced this album(makes a lot of sense, actually. He's got a lot of humor in his songs). It sounds weird and abrasive, but I can definitely understand why these have a cult following though, it's agressive and sounds wrong, but something about it is encapsulating. It seems like they had a huge influence on experimental bands and areas of punk. Also I really liked the Moonlight on Vermont track, that ripped hard. I feel like this album heavily influenced The Mollusk by Ween, because God damn, this album is what this reminded me of.

I was 14 in 1978 when I first heard Zappas Absolutely Free & We’re Only in it For the Money & it was the most unpredictable & brilliant things I’d ever heard but although I respect Beefhearts’ pushing back against many predictable rock or blues norms I struggle when there aren’t catchy melodies which although sometimes whacky Zappas tunes more often had . Glad you’re beginning to appreciate this. Maybe I’ll give this another go.

The album came across better on its original vinyl, where the music was divided into four sides. Each one had a sort of mood. I especially enjoyed side four, but I wonder if I would have if its songs had just been the closing numbers on a CD. Sometimes you need to listen to music in its original media for it to really come across. By the way, that's the Mothers of Invention doing the backing music on "The Blimp." It's a song called "Charles Ives." Jeff Cotton does the poetry reading on this one. Shame he wasn't in the band longer.

    hopeful for a modern-day follow-up. as a TMR alumni i have a few points:
    1. Veteran’s Day Poppy- A mother mourns her son’s return from war addicted to heroin.
    2. The paper shredder part of Sugar & Spike is John Drumbo French going full-out cray while the rest of the band plays their part in the regular time signature. no easy task done live in the studio.
    3. The album was written and rehearsed daily for just under a year before they stepped foot in Franks studio. Frank rolled tape and they played the music exactly as it appears on the record. (the exception being Moonlight and Veterans Day Poppy)
    4. Big Joan’s hands are too small because the rest of her body is so big. oh and he loves her. he won’t droop if she don’t talk about her hands being too small. he hates how the world fat-shames her.
    5. I dig your fresh perspective. what do you think after these years? oh- and it’s Pachuco CADAVER like a cold, dead body.
    Thanks, man!
