This children's librarian is super stoked to hear that you take your pre-school aged child to story time at the library. Reading to children regularly is the single largest factor determining the ease and speed that they learn to read for themselves. And while they wait for the other kids to catch up to them, their reading proficiency will race ahead of their peers- often to such a significance that others who were not exposed to books before schooling will not catch up to them until until their teenage years. Keep it up! Regular visits to story time and frequently reading books at home is the best thing you will ever do for your child's education and development!
I used to work at a library and do their storytimes, which is why getting my little guy there is so important to me. My husband and I are bookworms so our son already has his own bookcase. He can pick out which book he wants just by recognizing the spine. When he has independent playtime, he likes to sit down and flip through a book. He's only nineteen months old, but he recognizes a lot of letters and numbers just from reading. It's not something we push on him. He just already gravitates to books 😁
@@HattoHem That is wonderful to hear! I am also an Early Years Teacher (dual Education/Library Science degrees!). And don't discount the efforts you have made in developing his interests in reading. A present of books in infants lives (particularly in his room, and not just in the house), frequently being read to, as well as watching you and your spouse read for pleasure all have had a major impact. You may not have "pushed" him in to reading, but the constant presence of books in his life and to modelling of reading from his parents have had a direct impact on his early literacy development. It is not that your child is naturally smarter than others (although he may be!)- you have taught him good reading habits, which will impact his entire educational career (and indeed, the rest of his life).
I enjoyed this so much! The pattern matching was absolutely magical. I love how the finished piece looks, and adding that contrasting panel in the skirt was a brilliant choice!
Thank you so much! I nearly cut the contrasting panel due to time, but I'm really glad I didn't because I think it's my favorite part of the whole outfit!
This is such a pretty dress and I think your choices about what Meg would have worn are absolutely on target! Ever since reading this book as a child, I always loved Meg’s character….
Yay! I'm glad you appreciated my rationale! I put a lot of thought into this and I'm glad you absolutely get it! Meg has always been my favorite too and I really wanted to do her justice.
This is the most wholesome and best thing to watch! I love how every decision you made would make sense for Meg too, and also that line matching up was the most perfect thing! My perfectionist brain is SOOOOOO happy!
the dress is gorgeous exactly as it is--i love the fabric, buttons, and ribbon sash. i also love your attitude toward sewing--it's not the end of the world to simplify the design, to make a mistake, to have a happy accident, etc etc. all of this makes me really glad i watched this video, and i think you captured meg's attitude beautifully, too.
Oh, wow, thank you so much! I do my best to roll with the punches. I realized years ago that it doesn't help to sulk over a mistake or change, at least, not for too long. It makes more sense to move on, try to fix it, or take a productive break. I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! I hope you'll check out my chemise video when it comes out in 2023 because I have a pretty big mistake I had to fix!
I have an irrational hatred of making bias tape. There's no good reason for it. Part of why I made a continuous bias tape video was to remind myself that making it isn't that bad 😂
My favourite part of the dress is the band of trim on the skirt - I love the use of s bias-cut self trim on checked or striped fabrics and it's such a nioce choice of fabric - like a gingham with extra detail woven in to edge the stripes in blue.
SO LOVELY!!! It turned out so good!! Your "Big Project Short Timeline" playlist is so relatable! That fabric is perfect. Very excited to see the bonnet. That pattern matching on the skirt is insane. It reminds me a lot of the detail on one of Beth's dresses we all really liked on the PBS Little Women mini series. I also love your family effort for the dress story line. I think it's mentioned somewhere that Meg was making over one of Maree's gowns. Such a wonderful project and video. I also cannot believe that this collab happened and turned out so amazingly!!!
The Big Project Short Timeline playlist is taking over my channel and I'm not sure how I feel about that ;P That Beth dress detail was absolutely my inspiration! I had to simplify it for time, but that was my tribute. I'm glad you enjoyed the extra chapter I made up in my head. I honestly can't believe this happened either! Hopefully our 2023 projects go this well! ;P
As annoying as the tear on that buttonhole is, I think it makes it even more fitting for Meg at that time of her life. To me, this reads as little hands playing with the button, holding on too tightly and causing a probably reasonably often worn and cleaned fabric to tear. Remaking the bodice is not in the budget, repairing it is on the never ending to do list, but visits must be paid, so a ribbon belt to hide it is the perfect fix. I love the dress and the thought that went into it.
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it! I think you're absolutely right about this working so well for Meg this this time of life. I know I've definitely hidden mistakes like that!
It’s a gorgeous dress, especially made by a busy Momma so you nailed the vibe. And the pattern matching, you were blessed by God in that moment, the overlaps were **crisp.**
Okay, so, my husband had fallen asleep on the sofa and was startled awake by me bursting into the room exclaiming, "I'VE BEEN BLESSED BY THE SEWING GODS!!!" It was a complete accident and I can't believe it happened. Similarly, I can't believe I finished it! I'm so glad you enjoyed this!
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! We all worked really hard on these and we're so happy to finally share them. (Well, "finally" for everyone else. I didn't have to wait as long ;P)
I'm in awe of you. How on earth did you make this wonderful dress in such a short space of time? Your attention to detail was soooo much better than mine even when I have loads of time to finish a project. I love how you tell your story and edit the sewing sections too. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I used to sew big projects in short timelines all the time. Honestly, I do still do it more than I like. 😅I tend to work better under pressure. I'm so glad you enjoyed the story! I like showing the sewing journey more than "I did this, then this." But it doesn't always work out that way. It all depends on how much I can say to the camera, which depends on if my family is in the next room. I felt like I took a risk not including more voiceover, but I think that helped the tone of the video. I might try to do that more often!
YAY! After more than a year of UA-cam NOT notifying me about your videos -- they NOTIFIED me for this one!! I love this project. I love how the hoop looks over pajama bottoms! 😂 Sorry about your buttonhole. Yesterday, I was trimming a flounce, trying to be so careful, and caught the very end in the wide edge in the scissors (it had flipped under) and had to trim the flounce narrower. Your dress looks MAGNIFICENT!!! I LOVE the green sash!! YAY!
Yay! I'm so glad they notified you for this one! If it helps, there should be a little bell icon below my video near where it says "Subscribed." If you click on it, you should be able to turn on all notifications. I'm glad you liked the dress, but I'm sorry about your flounce. If it helps, I actually cut into my chemise while I was trimming something. That should be in a 2023 video.
Thank you! I'll be sure to add some fabric tac soon. Maybe I'll also patch it like they would have in the book! Happy holidays to you and yours as well!
When your bodice is pieces like that, I have just two words for you: burrito method lol makes it a bit harder to fix mistakes and put a proper collar on, but then your lining is firmly attached to the outside layer and doesn't slide around, and you can still sew in a zipper in the front if you want.
I typically prefer to flatline my fashion fabric to the interlining and treat them as one piece. I usually avoid bag linings because I just don't like them.
Thank you! You're right, that would be fun! I know some people did villains but most did a princess. And then there's me, doing a human version of a dog 😂
As a mom myself I appreciate your practical approach to Meg’s wardrobe. I love the fabric and the contrast buttons. Way to go finishing the dress on such a time crunch! I’m sorry about the rip (I’ve been there!). If you feel up to it in the future I think you could easily lop off the bottom edge of the bodice and replace it with a waist band. In the meantime, the ribbon was a great fix and feels like Meg wanting to make her clothes a little more fancy. ❤
I'm so glad you liked it! You're absolutely right about replacing it with a waistband. I'm glad you liked the ribbon though! I can't believe I found a quick fix that was also in character.
Hi Yes big projects in little time seems to happen. Yes holidays are busy. I’m glad you’re well. The fabric is lovely!!! It’s so pretty!!! That pattern matching is satisfying. I love your family effort thought.
I seem to have built my channel around the Big Project, Short Deadline theme! I'm so glad you enjoyed this and appreciated the pattern matching as much as I did!
I actually cringed on your last button hole snaffu. Been there and done that. ouch! Your dress turned out beautiful. Thank you for bringing about this collaboration
Oh, believe me, I also cringed! It happens and luckily I was able to cover it! I'm glad you liked the collaboration! I know Dixie and Marie's videos should be up soon. Elise's is already up and worth checking out. She sewed her dress BY HAND because her sewing machine wasn't working. It makes tearing a button hole seem pretty tame!
Oh covid, I had it also for 3 weeks and it was brutal. I am glad to see you back and wonder if you have any long lasting effects from covid, anyway welcome back to life. LOL I see you working hard as usual, I love watching you. You have so much talent and it shows in the dress you made it's so, so pretty. I love the fabric and colors you use. Merry Christmas to you and yours, especially your son. I bet he loves the wrapping paper more than the present.
A very Merry Christmas to you! Covid was pretty brutal, but it seems I made a full recovery. I was pretty lucky. Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm so glad you liked it! I'm sure my little guy is going to absolutely love the wrapping paper!
Beautiful dress. The fabric choices were definitely all Meg.
Thank you! I still can't believe I was able to get this fabric after waiting so long for it!
What a lovely dress. The buttons and lace just finish it off. A dress to be proud of.xx
Thank you so much! It's all in the details, right?

Oh Melissa. I gasp when I saw the buttonhole. However, I think Meg would have just rolled with the punches as well. It turned out fabulous
Thank you! If Meg can go to a party with her hair singed, I think a torn button hole would be nothing! ;P
You did a beautiful job, Melissa. As for the tear, use a bit of fabric tac to repair it. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
