Hearing Americans defend bass in Japan is identical to the Europeans defending common carp in North America. Just some food for thought.

However, there are more bass anglers in Japan than there are carp fishermen in the US.

Same for Australia, Coarse/Match fishers from the UK/Europe refuse to accept common Carp and European Perch are destructive invasive species here, and to be fair local trout anglers have a hard time accepting trout are as well.
Catch and release has it’s place, but 100% catch and release only sport fishing is problematic for a number of reasons.

@@kermitthehermit9588 100% catch and release is bad for native Bass fisheries as well. Water bodies have a maximum holding capacity for aquatic life and in small Bass lakes things can get really messed up if people release all the dinks because it leads to overpopulation really quickly.

As an American carp fisherman, I don't give a damn about the Europeans. They flip the hell out at anything less than full carp coddling. Makes me want to bowfish.....in England.

i think that when you have a Non native species for 80 or 100 or even more years it's not simple to manage the fish and habitat to come back to the original one. So .. for what I've seen in Italy, and here in Spain where I'm living, there is no need to kill bass, they found a place to live and growth with other species and after many years the nature found an equilibrium

Until you don’t have any native species left. Black bass are extremely aggressive predators. Japan is a wondrous nation, and it’s environment should be just as important to preserve as anywhere else.

If it’s hurting the natives then releasing them is pretty reckless. Here is Australia carp and Perch have really hurt the natives. Europeans love those fish but even as a catch and release angler I won’t return carp ever and Perch only in closed systems

That's interesting how popular an invasive species is as a sport fish in Japan. Here in the eastern US, the asian carp are out of control, and it's mainly bowfishermen and commercial fishermen that specifically target them.

Interesting info on Japan bass fishing, Geoff…..I never knew the “lay of the land” on catching/keeping bass there….I know how challenging bass fishing can be…here in So Cal, catching 5 bass for any angler hardly ever happens at a couple shoreline only fishing spots I fish often….the norm is 1 to 2 bass on any given day for an experienced angler….the challenge is high, but the level of satisfaction for landing a bass makes us keep coming back for the challenge.

Very interesting subject, here in So. Cal. our Fish and Game biologists is asking us to remove limits of bass 12 to 20 inches from the lakes. He says the reason we are not seeing the trophy's from the past is because of over population of bass.

The same thing is being said for Lakes like Oroville and Shasta since you can have 60-70 spots a day and they all weight 1 1/2lb carbon copies. Thinning them out would let them grow shoulders.

Saltwater requires no license but freshwater some locations will. For example, part of the tama river near where I live will require but from what I heard they do not check very often. I went to a local shop and the owner told me that this year I can continue to fish no problem because it was already August because the license is from Jan to Dec so I would lose out on half the year but still pay full price. So he asked me to buy next year.

Really good, up-to-dated info! I live in Osaka and my Area Trout fishing sempai has talked about these issues a lot. I was told to never transfer Bass or Bluegill to a new lake or take live fish away with you. Trout fishing also gets a lot of pressure, so after a crowded weekend, the trout learn not to bite or to give test bites. Shore fishing near Osaka City and the more populated southern areas get really crowded to. My friend also told me that bass fishermen have a "bad " reputation among more straight-laced folk here -- they have a kind of rebellious image. Good luck on your fishing adventure!

Behind my house is the colorado river in bastrop...im used to the dammed parts 10+ feet deep in austin...i go to fish out here and its shallow river 2-5 ft. Deep and you catch spotted guads and 18inch is huge 21 22 can happen but the main thing is 1 fish in a day is amazing...best i ever did was 17 fish only 2 of them were above 10 inches. Point...rivers close to there natural depth with acctual fish that lived there for millions of years tend to be harder game to catch and so it seems japanese strategies work best...its a whole different type of fishing river spotted vs largemouth fishing and it took me 2 years to figure out they dont bite like largemouth and you need a good subtle presentation or no go.

I believe when mead is full, it’s very similar in size! I wanted to try the hoog out this past season to see how it compares to the hinkle. It swims pretty good and it gives me the confidence that if I ever run out of hinkles, the hoog can replace them!

Kyoto is only 15 minutes away from the lake itself and there are tons of tackle shops around the lake! thank you for sharing a great information. and i would just like to add something to the information.
i have been bass fishing in japan for 19 years even now. Lake KASUMIGAURA the 2nd largest lake is slowly being restricted and there are lots of areas that has a NO FISHING signs that are posted for the past 2 years already.
i would advice you guys to go fishing in the rivers rather than lakes. lakes are slowly being ristricted for fishing (NO Fishing zone) all around japan, but rivers don't have those rules and restrictions. but be careful with your garbage and manners when fishing. i recommend any where outside TOKYO, OSAKA, NAGOYA and other large cities. for example my home field KINUGAWA river in Ibaraki prefecture is perfect but challenging lol
Fish ON! and enjoy.... i hope we'll meet on a fishing day :)

I live down south in Nagasaki Prefecture and bass fishing is so so. I actually quit bass fishing last year. The problem is like you said, the farmers have priority and it seems the water in the lake and ponds in my area are always low because of them.

Very interesting perspective about native vs. imported specie. About catch n release in some european countries like Switzerland and I believe Germany also catch n release isn't allowed. You must kill and keep due to political influence from green parties. You cant have fun playing with fish. If you fish you kill and eat. Just like in hunting.
There was some issues in Spain with bass considered as an invasive specie threatening native species.
However most anglers are releasing their fish.

Some of the trout streams in Japan I’ve seen on UA-cam are absolutely stunning and so are the trout. Usually have some sort of old architecture near by as well which is so cool. It’s no wonder that’s becoming more popular.
Reminds me of fly fishing the holler streams in West Virginia that have super old bridges and rock retaining walls by the streams that look like they are from the 1800s. With big ole brown trout inside!

Then in the next breath you say the reason the fish are so large is because they keep the population down so there is enough forge for them. I doubt the Japanese govornment would do so much if the bass had literally no or just a really minor effect haha. I get it we are bass fishermen its what we wanna do. But i think its important to respect that Japan is attempting to protect rhe clearly awesome fishery they have. You seem to understand if they didnt protext it it wouldn't be like it is.
