Five years later, I come back to make the same comment. Chelsea is an amazing performer, and musician, and composer,.. and her music is full of emotion. To hear music, listen with Your ears, and let it go to Your heart, if You do that by any measure of the heart Chelsea is full of SOUL !!! L O V E I T !!!!
Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer and you played this so beautifully Chelsea that it brought tears to my eyes! I am sending this video to all my friends. God bless you!
Hi Chelsea! Really outstanding playing - your left hand was absolutely marvelous, like on your Chopin etude. And it's nice to see a certain French critic singing a more pleasant tune this time because you stood up to him. Way to go, Chelsea! *****
She is 14, shy and in front of people. As passionate as I am at 28, I can not pull off her level of performance with such concentration. When you present me a video of you playing at 14 this piece with passion in front of an audience, I would understand your comment. In my opinion she is very passionate to choose that song to begin with.
To all those who chide this youngster for her "emotional distance" and "lack of feeling," may I please submit that at age 13, she is perhaps 30 or 40 years too young to have experienced life's emotional and psychological pain and tumult that can only be "properly" expressed through this music by the experience of age. For Chelsea, this is little more than a technical exercise, as her manner makes clear after she strikes the last chords. And as for Lugansky, I am not so sure. :)
really nicely articulated. mayb more ranged dynamics for rachmaninov, more rubato , bring melody line out a bit more. but good strong technique. well done ;D
@crexirklev There are all sorts of approaches to playing a piece of music. Also, certain composers suit certain people. I love Chelsea's playing, and her "distance" is sometimes a great asset. Remember that Ulanova was accused to "not engaging with the audience". Such souls are often seeking perfection in their art.
First of all its a fantastic performance and worthy of praise! Yes she *appears* to be in a bit of an emotional shell - however that doesn't mean she is emotionless - everyone has feelings. If someone is keeping them hidden, it is just a matter of getting them to open up. It is not easy but it is essential for growth and maturity so I do think she could spend some of her time training to explore ways of expressing her feelings through her interpretation of the piece.
@MrStrav81 Right, she is a child. That's how most children behave in front of an audience when they are done performing a piece of music. Kids take a half bow -- it happens every day at hundreds of piano recitals around the world. There are exceptions, of course.
o nuts............ i'm 14 and I've beening learning piano for 5 years... even though I dont go to a musci school I can still still play stuff like moonlight 3rd movement. BUT THIS IS JUST MADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD... D I'll hope I can play this when I'm 18.....
@princeashtonsdad Relax man, I dont think anyone is worried about her color, I think people say she isn't "into it" because she isn't moving around much or showing a lot of facial expression. It is obvious she is very talented, and I think if she was closing her eyes and moving around, the same people would be saying more positive things.. People are very visual when watching music happen.. I thought she was puerto rican anyhow, shes pretty light skinned.
@PeacefulStrife I agree with you. I'm from the school for playing the music accurately and with feeling, and if the physical body expression doesn't come naturally, there is no need to take a course in OVERACTING from Histrionics University!!!! The music speaks through her. If you want to hear a robot play the piece, try listening to a quantized midi version of this piece which is absolutely rhythm perfect!!!! SO much inferior to Chelsea's playing !!!! BRAVO CHELSEA !!!
I agree with Geo. Chelsea may not wear her emotions on her sleeve, but she has lots of technique and that doesn't come to a disinterested person unless they are gifted to begin with. What she'll do with music is anyone's guess but I hope she gets serious. She could do big things if she put her mind (and emotions) to it.
@WhoLueYou dont hate jus cuz u cant play as amazing as my friend chelsea can. shes a beast on the piano and you know it! i WISH i could play as good as she does! if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all!!
I'm bucking the trend here. This is an excellent performance. There are many recordings that i have heard that are not as good. Everyone is anxious to criticize a 13 year old, who gives a nearly flawless performance,.. and a lot of the criticism is a bunch of baloney!!!! The quality of the recording (distant microphone) is being blamed on the performer. I think this is a very articulate performance marred by imperfect recording devices. Less histrionics,.. A GOOD THING!!!
hcgmomto. I am sick of people going on about robots etc. If you want to see a performing seal, go to SeaWorld. Or maybe you could view American Idol for people showing lots of (phoney) emotion. Chelsea's emoton comes out in her playing. Listen to her performance, and I think you will find that she is not "bored". I agree with most people (who love her here) commenting on Chelsea's playing. She is great, and she should certainly not change her style one iota.
rachmaninoff is rly rly hard to play. im playing 1 right now and its taking a long time to get all the expression in and stuff. and my lvl10 exam is in 2 months T>T
@gleventhal Ironically, it's the lack of (musical) color that people are harping about. Yes she is talented, but come on, she's clearly not musically mature enough for this piece just yet.
This girl is clearly very very talented, but she needs to get into the music more. technically she's good which is half the battle. but the other half is interpretation and style, neither of which can be seen in this performance..
@Pian0O0 no he doesnt russians are taught not to show emotion but let emotion from the piece speak to the listeners cause no one wants to hear a machine play because it is distasteful and a slap in the face to the audiance and boring

How can you even remember a piece like that by heart..?
Absolutely amazing! You have a real gift Chelsea! Keep up the good work!
Hi Chelsea! Really outstanding playing - your left hand was absolutely marvelous, like on your Chopin etude. And it's nice to see a certain French critic singing a more pleasant tune this time because you stood up to him. Way to go, Chelsea! *****
Wow! You're extremely gifted! I love the way you play. Keep on playing, don't ever stop.
Wow! Chelsea that was great! Your progress is amazing! I can tell you love this! So talented!
Amazing!! You are very talented. i can't believe that you learnt all this in only 3 months! Brilliant!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! well done. so inspiring. keep it up chelsea love it!!!
Amazing and beautiful! Extremely gifted. As always, ignore all negative comments and play as only you can.
You're hard working and gifted. You have such an amazing future ahead of you.
I'm very impressed at her age. I am currently learning how to play this piece. And getting the hang of it.
She is 14, shy and in front of people. As passionate as I am at 28, I can not pull off her level of performance with such concentration. Well Chelsea, three months of dedication certainly paid dividends. That was terrific. Not something I would try that's for sure.
In tune
Lalita
A very good performance on this insanely difficult piece. Keep up your good work!
This is amazing and you play it very well! ^_^ Of course I gave this a five star!

It seemed like she couldn't wait to be done at the end. She took a half bow.

She's awesome!!!
that was incredible!
quelle dextérité de la main gauche! merci et bravo!
@huduk77 what do you mean she did not capture the beauty of the piece ? This is pretty good.
That's great playing!
Holy man good job!
je suis d'accord de junksabs! Incredible dexterity! This girl is brilliant.

what would you want her to do differently?
She has no emotion. She looks bored. But she is da bomb!! Excellent. She should be a millinaire by now!!!
rachmaninoff is rly rly hard to play. im playing 1 right now and its taking a long time to get all the expression in and stuff. and my lvl10 exam is in 2 months T>T

sad isn't really the same as no feeling
Learn chopin etudes! Participate in a chopin competition! you can do it!
Brilliant playing, but she seems so sad. Like no feeling
She has the rhythm and notes right, but she needs more articulation and feeling!
This girl is clearly very very talented, but she needs to get into the music more. technically she's good which is half the battle.
but the other half is interpretation and style, neither of which can be seen in this performance..
Man, it's great, but the performance of it isn't very mature. But nevertheless - great effort!!! =D
She has taken piano for nine years. I'm not surprised she can play this. Not the best pianist.
@Pian0O0 no he doesnt russians are taught not to show emotion but let emotion from the piece speak to the listeners cause no one wants to hear a machine play because it is distasteful and a slap in the face to the audiance and boring
Like a robot. Does she fell anything?? I don´t hear and see any emotions...Technic is not everything.
@Pian0O0 no he doesnt russians are tought not to show emotion but let emotion from the piece speak to the listeners cause no one wants to hear a machine play because it is distasteful and a slap in the face to the audiance and boring
Hard to listen to.
not musical at all
