We've been living in Chelmsford for a couple of years now & we love it here. 🤷🏻♂️ I'm personally from Dagenham, grew up there. Chelmsford is an absolute breath of fresh air in comparison. The locals are really nice for a start. But there's always something going on, some nice places to go to, things to take the kids to. We feel right at home here, proud to be a converted Chelmsfordians! 😊
My god! I'm originally from Dagenham and now living in Danbury (small world). I feel blessed to be here also. You're right. It really is a breath of fresh air.
My birthplace! Glad that you showed the monstrous carbuncle that is the multi-storey car park in the background in the first minute of the video. The shops in Chelmsford are decent, and it's a pretty safe place with good schools etc. Main issue is that it could be anywhere, really, like so many places in the south.
And whenever you bring up that there's absolutely nothing going on there or anything really of note to see/do people's first answer is always "oh but it's close to London". Which IMO is just not good enough an excuse. Also, 45 minutes and realistically almost 30 quid per person to begin to get somewhere in my books isn't "close". It also doesn't excuse having to pay London prices for basically everything whilst the variety, quality and convenience of said things is always worse. I think the issue with so much of the South East is that a lot of the people there haven't properly experienced life anywhere else in the UK so they don't realise that actually its really crap.
As someone who has lived in Chelmsford my whole life it’s so weird watching you go around my home town and exploring my favourite places. Sooo glad you enjoyed toast it’s my absolute favourite! I hope that Alfie has changed his mind about us and has realised we don’t all stink of piss in Chelmsford 😂 little happy hour reference for those who know 😂.

I was born in Chelmsford (though the exact hospital's no longer there) and somewhat support the football team for that reason - if you can count Googling their scores on a Saturday as supporting a team. The high street's definitely the best part of the place, if I'm going to go, it'd be for shopping mostly. Pretty decent place overall, Dickens doesn't know what he's on about.

Also Toast is a small chain with 5 locations across Essex, so all the more reason to come back if you decide to do Colchester, Braintree, Witham, or Sudbury
It’s really funny and ironic that Charles Dickens said that about Chelmsford because half the streets in north Chelmsford are named after his books or characters in them. Little Dorrit, Barnaby Rudge, Quilp Drive, Sowerberry Close and Flintwich Manor just to name a few
