Not sure why this would be, you could try adding a white shape underneath the artwork which might hide any gaps. you could also try expanding the object then merge the back white shapes with the pathfinder tool (Unite Option). hope this helps.
Jessan Palomer expand the appearance then ungroup everything. Then unite the shapes together using the pathfinder that should go together. I.e the whole white part of the candy cane. Then the same for the other matching elements. Hope this helps.

can i make it on adobe illustrator cs 6?
radigrafis i think so. You should have access to brushes/patterns in that version.
