What surprises me in japan was the honesty and safety. People just leave their things on the table like cellphone, bag or wallet just to reserve the space when they order in a fastfood and no one dare steal their stuff, in my country when you do that expect that it will be gone the moment you leave your things unattended.

60 years ago when stationed in Japan, the most surprising thing in Japan was the seriousness of the people behind the kind manners there never was a loss of composure to uncontrolled humor and laughter. They set goals with strong desires to complete them.IMHO

I live in California, and when I was ten years old, I started studying Judo at the San Jose, CA Buddhists Temple, and that is when I really fell in love with the Japanese culture. I appreciate most the good manners, the respect for others, and especially the respect toward the elderly.
I remember seeing a news article about a Japanese train that was scheduled to leave at 9:44:40 and it left at 9:44:20 and they issued a massive apology and that's when I learned how punctual Japanese people/culture is lol

I was stationed in Sasebo myself, for three years, and I absolutely loved it. I visited Fukuoka several times. Feels like a smaller Tokyo. I’m glad that guy didn’t get Florida and he gets to experience an entire different culture for several years and that, I’m sure, will change him for the better. And I’m only saying this because I perceived a little contempt from him but maybe I’m looking too hard.
I got the same impression. He doesn't seem to have any interest in the history or culture of the country he is living in. My father was stationed in Japan after WWII. He fell in love with the country and people and took my mom there several times. I grew up surrounded by Japanese art and learning all about the culture. I need to visit someday!
More than a few Americans do not share similar outlook like yours. For instance, many Americans go to other countries and seek out American fast food places as opposed to trying the country's cuisine! 😄 The American representative as a soldier in the interview came across as a similar xenophobe as part of his upbringing and outlook. Hopefully this person took the opportunity to be abroad to broaden his mind and his views. Doesn't always happen but one can only hope...!
Great video, thank you! I have visited Japan once in 2016 and agree the lack of rubbish disposal options is unexpected. But we had no problem buying a local SIM card with data and a Japanese number at one of the many retailers for a reasonable price.
Traveling with a friend in Japan years ago we got on a Shinkansen in Nagoya... and then they announced departure, but it was 2 min before our train. We jumped off as the doors closed! Our train arrived a minute later on the same track. Always check the train # before you get on... you can be too early.
Another fun interview, ありがとう! This was a minor thing, but when I was there, I was surprised that a lot of public washrooms don't have paper towels or air dryers and you are supposed to have a hand towel with you. But I ended up really liking mine and the different styles you can get them in. I still have them and use them, especially skiing when my nose runs (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)

SIM/Card Wifi is very easy for anyone coming from the US. You just need an unlocked phone (can be from the US), and you can buy at any of the large Japanese airports or outside vendors. Can get it in the first minutes of landing without talking to anyone from a vending machine.

Naruto characters are a bunch of regurgitated tropes, more so than in other anime. And that takes a lot of effort to surpass the great majority of anime in copy-pasting the most bland and unoriginal characters. So if you think about that it's logical that the only character who had a bit of creativity put into him would stand out.
Before I come to japan. I been to Singapore is clean punctually like japan.but the surprise thing in japan is adult book in convenience store, remember school children also going to the store.
Everything regarding a service or administration in Japan is arduous, expensive and 大変. It's a game. If you lose you temper or complain, or expect any deviation from a specific outcome, you lose. A First World issue. Overall, it's a wonderfully safe, orderly, "well-regulated" democracy and I love living here : )
The trashcan thing is really annoying! You get Starbucks or something and when you are finished you have no bin to throw it away… Surprisingly the cities are very clean tho. 😅 One thing for me which weighs that off for me is free toilets everywhere! In Germany you have to pay for public toilets.
When I visited Japan, I think the first thing I was surprised by was that you could just buy liquor at the conbini 🤣 Haven't been able to do that since I lived close to the Quebec border. I was also surprised by how Japanese museums are just full of very detailed miniatures and dioramas, which I think is great! Museums in Canada tend to lean more towards hands-on exhibits, large displays of original objects, or a lot of text.

What susprise me was the unfriendly shiba dogs. I first took it that these dog hate foreigners but I soon realised that shiba dog hate all people and sometimes seem to dislike their Japanese owners.

What's so surprising about japan is the deep-seated racism issue in japanese culture. It's shocking how the world intentionally ignores this serious issue in japan.
You're right, and I've experienced it. But Japan is a homogenous (for now) society that has been closed off to the world for most of its history. They aren't worse than what I've seen elsewhere, but they are trying to be better and things are changing quickly. I see children of various backgrounds in average public schools being treated as equals, for the most part. I also see extra support for those who truly want to immigrate. They've opened their arms to Ukrainians as of late with a lot of support. Racism really seems to come from older generations here based mostly on fear of the unknown or fear of change. Otherwise, it's a tiny minority of nationalists. Nothing is inherent to Japanese society. Hell, through history, they were awful to their own based on how poor they were. Compared to that, they're fine now. The more you know, the less different it all is.
I think the first thing that really impressed me very first day way how clean the street and cars are. They looked like they bought the cars 3 hours ago hahaha btw Haneda has free wifi i would ne surpirsed if there would ne no free wifi in narita. And at least narita express has free wifi.

I have visited Japan 4 times and each time they're was more and more free wi-fi. Last time we hired pocket wi-fi and bought sim cards which we arranged online before we left, just picked up at the airport on arrival and kind of posted into a box on departure. Easy!

Lol I worked in a dog hotel. Those dog where the most distrusting dog I've dealt with.

Oh wow! There is no free wifi at the airport?! I don't have a clue how travelers can "survive" in Japan to get the internet connection because from this video, it seems too strict to get it. Hopefully you're gonna make a video about tips for first time travelers who visit Japan.
When I arrived at Narita in 2018, it had free WIFI, I used it
I have visited Japan 4 times and each time they're was more and more free wi-fi. Last time we hired pocket wi-fi and bought sim cards which we arranged online before we left, just picked up at the airport on arrival and kind of posted into a box on departure. Easy!
I was in Narita Airport last February and there was free wifi
