Both my sister and soon to be sister in law work with teens and children from broken families. It's refreshing to not see social workers as bad people like in a lot of movies. I think it just something from the past that stuck around.
It's even shown that they are proud of Lynda since she was in the foster system.

Whats scary is that ive actually watched a documentary on youtube of a real story just like this, that couple had i guess 6-7 kids and they didn’t send them to school, didnt feed them, they used to be hungry and starving but only the parents would eat… they would buy expensive clothes for the kids but never dress them in those clothes, they would just hang in the wardrobe , and above all this they chained their kids to their beds and beat them if they tried to get away… and they would go by their life as normal, until one of the girls escaped and ran out of the house with a cellphone and called 911 and since she was uneducated she had trouble understanding basic questions from the police… they arrived and thankfully helped the kids! I forgot what happened to those psycho parents but she and her elder sister now adults took care of the other younger siblings
Ive seen those police recording clips! She had the vocabulary level of elementary school child even as a teenager. I'm glad they got justice

What makes it worse is that the daughter that made the call had a youtube channel that she would use to record herself singing original songs on, but after the incident people started to realize the songs likely weren't so random in lyrics, and the videos could have been her expressing how much she needed an escape.
I remember the backlash this had because people were baffled when the kids sent their BAD "parents" away.
Geeze, these parents are really trying to give that one man from Full Metal Alchemist a run for his money for worst parent. The sad part is, before he did his heinous and infamous act that is perpetually viewed as 'too soon' when meme'd, he probably showed both his daughter and dog love, at least at some point. Not these parents.
I feel like part of the point was that him being a kind and loving father was what made it so horrific. Had he been a monster from the start, it would not have been that shocking.

I have a question. It's established in the movie that you can recognise a Willoughby by their hair. So what happened when they marry someone? Does that someone's hair just turn that way or is the Willoughby family line participating in inbreeding like the Targaryens?

If You see their pictures for an extended period of time, and consider some family traits like 'even the women growing mustache', it could very much be inbreeding, even the parents of the kids have a certain similar look about them.

I watch the Willoughbys when I was in the midst of a Covid pandemic quarantine, and it helped me cope with my emotional pain. You see in the Covid pandemic I felt a lot of emotional pain because I lost my routine that I loved the job I loved very much etc. even the plans that I was looking forward to for that year was gone and watching movies was one of my coping mechanisms for my emotional pain

My friend chelle brought up a good point. Lots of movies try to fix a blood family hunky dory and all that… but this and Matilda. Made a better ending by making a family out of better care and heart. Not blood and genes
It's sad that the closest thing to affection for tim was being patted on the head by 'father's' foot and be given his name and no doubt the same for the others except for the foot head pat.

I actually like this movie its a shame that theres a lot of people i know who dont know it. Although i wish the siblings learn and understand what the older brother goes through. Those selfish Willoughby parents got exactly what they deserved at the end of the movie. They were just as bad, if not worse, than the Turpin parents. The only difference being that the Willoughby parents neglected their 5 children and only wanted to spend all their quality time and money on themselves. Meanwhile, The Turpin parents who had not 14 children who they not only neglected but also tortured only because they wanted their own reality TV show and get that sweet reality TV fame and fortune.
And how much you want to bet that if the Willoughbys were indeed a real-life family, that Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby would get the same exact punishment as Mr. and Mrs. Turpin?
