Roses in Tropical Climates

  • Roses are not generally tropical plants, but thanks to the inclusion of a couple of sub-tropical species in the breeding of modern roses, many can take the higher temperatures and moisture of lower latitudes. In this video, I discuss managing roses in times of high temperature, humidity, rainfall - and I also recommend some roses that perform well in tropical gardens.

    I have about 50 roses, all in ground. I live in Queensland Australia, so crazy hot crazy humid, insane sun. They flower all year round. Biggest tips actually living somewhere tropical is plant the graft an inch above ground, prevention spraying for black spot almost year round. Mine are in 100% full sun, they are perfect, they just adapt

      Thanks so much for your insight! We hear so much in cool temperate climates about burying the graft union deep, and it's a good reminder that the best knowledge is often local knowledge.

      @@FraserValleyRoseFarm yep,my mum finally got a bunch last year after seeing mine do well for many years. I told her what to do with regards to planting (which I learnt of an elderly local lady) and she ignored me and went with the packet instructions 😅 (freezing temps where they are grown and shipped from down south and no real wet season either). They grew alright for a bit, but the first time we got a few proper months of rain they died one by one. As soon as she dug them out and replanted with the graft above soil she didn't lose another one.Still in the same raised garden bed 3 years on and they look amazing, was just the one change.

      Hope the roses don’t fly out of the ground with the 100km winds we are about to receive in Brisbane 😩 what roses do you mainly grow? I’ve ordered at least 25 bareroot for planting this winter

      @@tonitempleton8666 I don't really stress about winds, I'm in Mackay and most have seen several cyclones now with no issues. It's easy enough to stake them though if need be but I've never needed to. It's super humid and wet here, so I should grow more disease resistant varieties but honestly I totally ignore all that and just get whatever I like the look of. They all seem to fare the same. I've got mostly hybrid teas, probably 70% and the rest are floribundas. I actually just planted 10 bare roots today. My best performers up here are soul sister, st Patrick's, Harry wheatcroft, mothers love,Virgo, full sail, black magic. They flower year long here,no winter dormancy, I would say you will be the same in Brissy.

    Thank you! I'm in the southern Caribbean and grew up with roses planted by my mother. These were Dutch roses that she bought bare root from an international chain called Woolworth that had stores here. (That was in the 60s and 70s.) In the 80s and 90s I started growing roses of my own... all HT, including one (Tiffany) that my mother had grown very successfully. I lived in a very wet, hot valley and my battle with black spot was relentless: sulphur, systemic fungicides, the works, would just keep the BS at bay for the better part of one flush. I plan to grow roses again but I have to find varieties that aren't affected by BS because I refuse to use the spray chemicals again. Two that you mentioned here keep coming up in my search, namely Beverly and Belinda's Dream. (BTW, there are varieties that have grown here that never get BS, but I don't know their names. From what I can recall, they are shrub roses. I'm searching for these old local roses too. My mother (now 86) remembers her father's roses (cabbage roses, she says) that also grew well here on the equator.

    I live in Brazil (coastal region) and the temperature range is between 77ºF (Winter) and 93ºF (Summer, at night...). Most modern roses struggle during Spring and Summer (September to March), going into thermo-dormancy (ugly bare branches, occasionally with smaller, ugly and deformed flowers).
    Hybrid Perpetuals do perfectly fine (no thermo-dormancy, no diseases), but they are once-blooming...
    The biggest secrets to growing roses in extreme heat are:
    - An exceptional quality potting mix (commercial or homemade);
    - Perfect drainage;
    - Careful irrigation (never allow plants to dry completely during heatwaves and warm spells).

    I think China Roses do well here in the tropics. I've had several of them. I do note that they tend to have "thicker" petals and have a more pronounced "star" or spiked shape when the flower matures, the soft delicate curvy petals are hard to see except for one white Bengal Rose that I do not know the exact variety name. They also fail to create seeds 😅. This is my experience growing roses here in the Philippines, constant 90-80 degrees farenheit throughout the year. Most common pest is actually scale! Thanks for the info Jason. I wish to get more varieties. 😊😇

Others that grew well were Cecile Brunner climbing rose, some hybrid teas, miniatures, Brindabella roses grow very well there too, I had three colors of the Brindabella series.... and also some old roses, one was probably a china rose and the other was a white climbing rose that produces bouquets of white flowers and can often be found in old gardens. I also had Lady Banks which grew beautifully but never produced flowers (maybe it needed to grow more) .

    Jason. I have some David Austin roses and several red Knockout roses here in Charleston, SC. My Knockouts tend to become leggy and drop most of the inner leaves beginning in mid to late July. They get predominantly midday sun and bloom beautifully in the spring. They have continued to bloom,as I snip back to 5-leaf sections and new growth emerges.
    The dropping of leaves and the “legginess” concerns me. Do you have any possible solutions or recommendations from across the continent? I always enjoy your videos.
    By contrast, I have the same collections of roses in central Virginia, and those roses do exceptionally well.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 роки тому +2

      Dropping the inner leaves is a classic sign of drought stress - but the difficult bit is this: in high temperatures and humidity, it's difficult for the plant to take up moisture quickly enough, even if ample water is present in the soil. The stretchy growth would be another response to high humidity. Short of offering some kind of shade during the hottest parts of the day, I can't think of much else you can do to help them out.

    Very interesting! I didn't know that roses can grow in the tropics. Uve seen lots of tropical plants here in New York. We get hot and humid weather form June through September.

      A few things. You probably can take cuttings year-round in the tropics. Here, the right timing makes a bit of a difference. You may have to shade the cuttings more carefully because of higher temperatures.

    Fraser hi.. I’ve discovered my rose stick sprouting in 3 different places in the front garden with all the sproutings now gone.. so i dug it up & saw some roots on it .. put it in the back garden in a pot with other roses.. will it start to sprout from the bottom one day?.. thanks for listening & would be grateful for a bit of encouragement ( may be passing dogs chewed it up )

      Only time will tell - but so long as it has viable roots and some living stem, there's a chance that a dormant shoot will sprout.

    Hi Jason hope you are well, I have a question: do hybrid tea roses and other roses not native to tropical climates go dormant? Is it a built in mechanism? And what NPK fertilizer should I use to get them to have more leaves? Thank you!

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 роки тому

      Hi Raymund - most modern roses will only go (semi) dormant as they deal with less sun and cold temps. They'll stay in active growth in tropical climates. I'd usually choose something fairly balanced (like 10-10-10) - you can encourage more foliage with a higher N, but the plant needs a complete diet.

      @@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks! so I guess it's either lack of water or too much water or maybe dieback? I don't water everyday and keep feeling the soil first. I saw your unruly roses site and will try to post pics there. By the way, how long do hybrid tea roses become fully established in a pot from the time it was bought from the nursery? I'm planning to sell established rose plants in pots since most people have the notion that roses are hard to grow and it might be a good idea to sell them a fool proof rose plant.

      Sounds like a difficult spot to attempt roses - I wonder if you could make it work. Some shade during he most intense sun might be required. Frequent light irrigation during the hottest periods will help with some cooling.
