      I mean, it's a result of habit I guess. I've grown up and, more or less, always lived within a few 100 meters from my country's national football stadium. I go regularly, and the team I support have it's fair share of hooligans, so I've grown up with frequent riots just outside my door, all the nearby pubs I visit on a regular basis (on and off match day) have been attacked by opposite team hooligans and plain cloth and riot gear police is a weekly sight for me. I've adapted to that, I've learnt to spot a riot in brewing, learnt to think fast to avoid rocks and bottles being thrown against me and takes de-tours when I see large gatherings of riot Police (since nothing good comes out of that...). I park my car further away from the stadium of there is a derby or other high risk game.
      I'm not a young man anymore, so none of this really has anything to do with me (I don't participate in this behaveour anymore) but I've also realized that this isn't really normal. Nor in my country, nor in any other country. It's "normal" for us that experience it often, and it isn't really a cause for concern ("sometimes you've just got to riot, y'know"), but for anyone outside that little world it's utterly absurd and seems extremly dangerous.

    6:45 In 2014, in the third round of qualifying for the Champions League, the Polish club Legia Warszawa defeated Celtic Glasgow 4:1 in Warsaw. In the rematch in Scotland, the Polish champions won 2:0, but eventually lost by forfeit. All because of the oversight of the club's management, because Bartosz Bereszyński appeared on the pitch. The player was not eligible, and Celtic advanced to the next round. It was a great shock for Legia, because they won the matches, and because of a mistake they did not advance. So they showed a pig with the UEFA logo and a graphic that 6 is less than 1

    Ultra means fanatical fans. These are mostly people for which the team is their most of they daily activity. It could be said that they live for the team. I don't know any of the Greek teams but names like "gate x" could be their ultra group names due to sitting always around a certain place in the stadium. For example, a fictional ultra group always occupies the west curve of the stadium during the home games and would call themselves "The West Curve".

    • @MyRegardsToTheDodo
      @MyRegardsToTheDodo Рік тому +5

      No, Ultra doesn't mean hooligans. Ultras are organized hardcore fans, yes, and sometimes you have ultras that are also hooligans, but they're generally not the same. Some ultra groups try to actively work against hooligans, others don't (some even give their teams a bad reputation, when it comes to racist actions by ultras or something like that). But calling all ultras hooligans is a generalization.

      Yeah, in Greece the Ultra groups get their name from where the Organized fans sit. For Paok is Gate 4, so the ultras are GATE 4, For Aris is Gate 3 their name is Super 3 tho, For panathinaikos and olympiacos is Gate 13 and Gate 7 respectively. Almost every club in Greece has a Gate that the Ultras sit at.

    You should go and check out some videos of Liverpool football club fans. Not the same as the ultras in this video, but they can be really loud.
    Some examples are:
    YNWA at anfield(their stadium)
    Fan meetings(boss night)
    Fan meetings CL finale(Paris and Madrid, boss night)
    The fan meet ups before the CL finals are awesome. In Madrid it was 50k people gathered in the streets of Madrid.
    It’s a huge club and is associated as friendly supporters with huge passion.
    I might also be biased as I am a Liverpool supporter, but I can always name other huge clubs with insane supporters.
    I’ve been a lurker for quite some time now, leaving likes here and there.

    The displays you see in the ultra sections are called tifos. Some of them get pretty elaborate, too! They're usually made by a supporters group, and most of the time they're used to show support for the club at important matches and derbies but sometimes, like the one about caring about money over football, they're used as a form of protest. It's a really cool part of football culture.

I don't think they were big at football in Sweden. Anyway, England had just won over Germany. We were near Trafalgar Square and it was unusually hot. So people stripped down and danced in the fountain in Trafalgar Square. My Swedish friend was a bit threatened. I said, trust me, just do what they are doing and pretend we are English. Just let it all out you'll have a great time. So off came our shoes and we danced and chanted in the fountain at Trafalgar Square. The water was smelly but who cares. Ultras care for the game, Hooligans just care for the fight, to the point that they actually arrange a time and a place with the hooligans from the other side where they can meet and beat each others up. Hooliganism has become somewhat detached from football, especially since the football clubs have actively started to work against the Hooligans, sometimes by including the Ultras into these effords. Yes, I wouldn't want to walk through Cologne in a Gladbach jersey after a game between those two teams (and especially if Cologne lost said game), but the chance of anything actually happening to me (except for maybe some choice words) would be fairly slim.
