Kristenleannimal The first obvious one that comes to mind is Savy. But maybe a play on "monitor" i.e. computer monitors could be Apple or Lacie. Gaia was also the Greek deity of the earth 🖤

hello! I have a few diet tips! I would definitely recommend feeding VERY minimal meats until she gets back to a healthy weight! it's fine for them to eat meat every now and then, but too much of it causes obesity in savannah monitors, and since she's already a bit overweight, I'd definitely recommend sticking mainly to insects for now! dubia roaches, crickets, super worms, are all great options!
her cage looks awesome by the way!! I'm so happy she's getting proper care now!

    • @BigCityBettas
      @BigCityBettas 6 років тому +40

Emma Lynne Sampson I've also commented about her feeding the Reptilinks. Not sure why TND would even recommend them to someone with an insectivore so she can't be faulted that she was given bad advice. Hopefully she does her own research and gets all the appropriate information. She really seems to be trying to do her best for these animals so I'm sure it will all get sorted out. Frankly I'm impressed with how many fucks she obviously gives, easily the most responsibile new monitor keeper I've seen on this platform.

Adding to Emma Lynne Sampson's comment about feeding mammals causing obesity. Feeding mammals regularly to a savannah monitor has been linked to fatty liver disease which can cause death in savannahs. The canned dog food and canned chicken would defiantly contribute to the fatty liver disease. Just a warning for when she goes to the vet you might want to get her liver tested if the vet doesn't think of it (which they probably will) I hope you enjoy your journey with her and that she will be healthy and happy in your care! 🖤

Lily A. I agree with u. I used to own a savannah monitor and i kept in a small lil cage abt 160 gallons which sounds rly big for a cage but bcuz my savannah monitor was RLY BIG,the cage looked rly small and on the other hand i had no lights for the monitor and didnt feed him the proper diet so in the end when i was 12. I came back from schl after learning savannah monitor care and.....well i remodelled everything from scratch from his diet to his whole cage and light, now hes healthy:) but i will nvr forget how horribly i treated him😔

I don't get anywhere near Craigslist because of this.. Unless I'm looking for a new animal and ready to bring a rescue home.. I never understand the people that post an animal saying they can't afford it and don't have the time yet at the bottom where they put the "re-homing" fee it'll usually say "will do trades, tell me what you have" Wait what?! didn't you just say you can't afford to have animals..?? People can be so selfish and the animal ALWAYS pays for it in the end. I'm so happy you found her 👏👏👏

I do understand your point and back in 2013 in my reptile Craigslist days I can confirm people said that to avoid getting their post removed as Craigslist doesn't allow animal sales just rehoming them with a required rehoming fee.

Kristen I don’t even know how to start this because you’ve practically left me speechless. You have no idea how amazing you are for the things that you do. Whether it be for your fans in the makeup community, or the poor babies you rescue so frequently. I am also a die hard animal lover that wishes they could do the things that you do for these defenseless animals so being able to be a part of your journey with these new loves of yours is really inspirational. I don’t buy higher end cosmetics that much but when I do, it’s because I love and respect the creator and what they stand for which is why I had to jump on that Kaleidoscope palette. I just feel like I want to help animals so much and you do such an incredible job with rescuing that how could I not support. PLUS the palette is fucking EVERYTHING! Brixton as a highlight will literally stop traffic. I really cant thank you enough for just being you and for doing the things that you do for these animals in need. We need more people like you if we hope to make any kind of future change. Love ya girl! 🦎❤️🐊

Just thought you might want to know that reptillinks are actually terrible for insectivorous reptiles such as savannah monitors, way too much mammal protein for her to digest. Her new enclosure is amazing though! Perhaps you should recommend it to TND for her monitor so she can get him into an appropriate sized enclosure. Really respect the good work you've done here, she has a real good life now that you found her.

He was severely beaten but he is one tough boy. He is the sweetest dog all he wants to do is play and cuddle, somehow he got the idea that he is a little lap dog like my Pomeranian but when he stands up he is almost as tall as me!! Lol he is my 2nd child. After what he went through, he is still so trusting, sweet, happy and that makes me happy💚💙

I imagine she was a lot more financially stable when they got her, and they started to not be able to care for her. It’s awesome that you rescued this girl. Her enclosure is off to a great start. However in the wild Savannah monitors are actually not eating rodents. When biologists dissected the stomach contents of wild Savs they actually found almost exclusively invertebrates. Also by feeding her live invertebrates she will have to chase and dig just to catch small amounts of food which is great exercise. She will also benefit from very high basking temps (130-160 provided with multiple low-medium wattage bulbs) sounds crazy high but trust me our sav uses her 150 degree basking spot daily. Just make sure you use a nice spread of bulbs to create a big hot spot because one high wattage bulb will burn her. Hope this helps!

thank you so much for actually doing your research. I have my bachelors in zoology and work at rehabilitation center for wildlife and neglected animals. My speciality is in reptiles and I’ve owned them for the entirety of my life. A huge problem is the reptile industry is people not doing their research. They see a cool baby reptile in the pet store and think “oh cool!” So they impulsively buy it and don’t do their research, get bored of it in a month or two and then try to pawn the animal off onto someone else. Unfortunately savannah monitors and iguanas are especially subject to this because they usually go for a very low retail price as babies. They don’t understand how big they’ll get and on top of that, they somehow think that reptiles are easy to take care of. Reptiles are easy to take care of ONCE you have done the proper amount of research and have all of the proper material and care requirements they need. They are not for everyone, ESPECIALLY if you don’t have the money to buy as many supplies as you need for them or the passion to take care of them.

You are SO right! I've found it doesn't even have to cost that much more to have proper space for a hamster or any small animal. My guinea pigs' DIY cages were actually about half the price of a "large" pet store cage. There are very cheap option for DIY cages for hamsters too! People just don't care or aren't informed. Could you imagine being trapped in a tiny room for your entire life?

    • @melissabereading

Nunya Bidness yes!! Bin cages for hamsters are very cheap & with a little creativity can look absolutely amazing! I know things add up quickly but these are living things and if you’re in a position where you can provide proper care or keep up with the care then perhaps that animal should be left to someone that can. I’m so glad you chose the DIY route with your enclosure, I’m sure it’s awesome & your guineas love you for it of course ♥️

The thing with feeding them mice is that they tend to have a hard time digesting the skin and hair on them so usually people who feed monitors mice with skin the mice for them. But if you're only feeding her mice every once in a while she'll probably be okay without you having to skin it. also when you feed her the mouse I'd suggest waving it by its tail over her to get her to chase after it so that it's more like she's working to get her food. So happy you were able to rescue her, she deserves a good home

Super glad you made this video! I have a monitor, always researching about these guys! I think they're about as difficult as iguanas to keep...I feel like the enclosure is the hardest part. Mine is 9'x6'x8' and I still feel like it's not big enough. Always trying to replicate the natural habitat! I'm always looking for larger tunnels so if you find please share - however I can tell you mine absolutely LOVES his hollow log. It's pretty big, has 3 holes, and he sleeps in it and on it, loves to climb on it, etc. He's about the size of yours, and he's just a few months shy of 3. I've had him since he hatched, so I know exactly how old he is. Diet is a big one but has been a really fun journey. It's led to me learning about and keeping lots of other pets because their food can get expensive. Diet has to be really varied as you know, mirroring what they eat in the wild and too much of one thing is of course no good. Repti linx are great, dubias yes, also look into Madagascars. They're a hissing roach, larger than a dubia and more hearty but expensive as f*ck, so I started my own colony and would recommend if you can. They actually make good pets too. It's been fun building and watching that colony grow and learning about them. I only have them for my monitor, but they're fun to watch and the colony has gotten quite large. Tip: they love oranges...makes them reproduce like crazy! Like..CRAZY. Anywho, that's another topic entirely. Also, I keep different types of snails, crawdads, even little lobsters for him. Quail eggs can be offered if the chicks make you queasy. I prefer to offer frozen ones...I can't do live. They're too cute and I have far too many pets as it is :) Shrimp is good for a treat, I had a small surplus of crabs at one point and he'd even crunch on those. Crickets can be offered for snack and chicken feet or an occasional hardboiled egg. Horn worms (also known as tomato worms) are good snacks / treats, as well as live grasshoppers. Those can br tricky to get because they're not actualy sold live since they're considered a pestilence. I actually (for my sweet monitor's sake) went through the painstaking task of colonizing those as well. I caught some from the plains, particularily BLM land not surrounded by farmland or residences due to the lower chance of pesticide contamination. Then I conducted a series of tests to weed out any possible parasite infection, waited for them to breed, separated the offspring and once hatched- repeated the tests, waited for them to breed and again separated the offspring. Once those offspring hatched and developed only then did I offer them to my monitor to eat, since I took them from the wild I wanted to make sure they wouldn't make him sick. It was a long process, lots of trial and error. Hoppers aren't easy but are quite rewarding if you are able to do so. He likes to chase them. My red spotted toads enjoy them as well as my chinese water dragon. Moths can also be offered in the spring/summer, sometimes one gets trapped in his cage and he enjoys chasing it. Would love to hear more about your cage setup - always looking for great ideas in that department that are both functional and asthetic! Good luck with a name.. I'm not great with names..it's all in the personality! Mine? He's Garbanzo Brownshanks, Lord of the Hollow Log. Keep up the good work!

I'm literally crying. Thank you for all you do for these animals. I have a red tegu after considering getting a Asian Water Monitor, but decided my home wouldn't be appropriate for a lizard of that size until I move into a bigger home and have it have a big ass yard and enclosure. I wish people did more research before taking home a pet. It's unfair. You're amazing.

You are a saint to help out that lizard. Savannah monitors aren't the easiest reptile to care for. As you already found out, the enclosure is big, they eat a lot of insect feeders, they need a lot of heat lights. I can't remember if they need uvb bulbs or not, so that's something to look into.
As other people have stated, they are primarily insectivores. They eat A LOT of insect feeders, and that will be one of the big costs of owning this girl. On the plus side, you can spread the bugs around the cage, giving her the fun of hunting them down. For some really good information, I recommend checking out Clint's Reptiles. He has a youtube channel, and honestly is one of the best sources of information on reptiles I've found. Most importantly, he did an info video on the Savannah monitor, and it really is fantastic.
One thing to watch out for is her having a grumpy adolescence as she perks up. Also, I'm not 100% certain about this, but if the species can see into the ultra-violet range of light, when you make and put her into an outdoor enclosure, you'll look different under the sun as opposed to the indoor lights, so she may not recognize you and attack. Again, that's if they can see in that range. I know it's a concern for tegus, but I can't say for certain about the monitors.
And only now do I see that this video is a couple months old, so this info is probably a little late to help you. But perhaps it might be useful for you or someone else, so why not post it anyway? And I suspect I am far too late for the name, but I would probably name her either Gem or Gemma, because she's a little treasure.

I'm sure she's grateful to you for saving her!
I hate it when people don't even try to suit an animal's needs, my tiny celestial parrotlet was in a cage like 12"L x 9"W x 15"H when he got dumped at a petstore in my area that does rescues, he couldn't do anything but sit on his swing, there was no space for his wings to stretch out let alone fly, to make things suckier the largest cage in the store that i bought to bring him home in was only a little larger 15"x12"x15" and he had to stay in it until i managed to get an appropriate flight cage in the mail a year later (my mom bought this bird for me as a present, at the time i didn't have a way of buying the cage he deserved but i worked hard to get it) his new cage is a large flight cage used normally to house 4 parakeets 48"H x 37"L x 23" W with a rolling base and a mixture of small and large bird toys. my family's rule has always been to do our very best with our pets and give them the best we can afford at the time, i would of preferred to get kiwi after i had his cage but he was a present that was bought for me, i'm just lucky i got to choose a larger cage for him, and while i'm still new to birds i'm doing the best i can to make a good owner for him ^.^

what i feed my 4 year old savannah monitor since she was a baby make a mix of
1/4 of ground beef ~1 raw egg ~dubbia roaches dust in vitamin and calcium D3 ~1/2 of super worm 1/4 of can tengu food (mine lovessss mangos and peaches) so i trow about a 1/2 cup of mango and peaches and 1/3 of some earthworm and at least
1 once a week a frozen adult mice (i give her 1) btw i feed her this meal about 3 times a week and and the other days i feed her roaches and mealworms crickets & earthworms.
and mine cage for her i made it with my husband and its about 15ft long and 13 ft deep so she has a loooot room to move around and exercise because in the wild theses animals move A LOT so make sure that she can move around perfectly ~ and i gave her about 4 hides and different places 2 in hot 2 in colds spots and some places that she can climb on and some where she can hide under the dirt for me her 2 heat spots are from 100 dg to 135 or 140 and its time lapse so she does not get burn her cool spot it about 90~85 at the very lowest and i do not recommend it is 75 ~
I hope this help you with her and you have a good new pet because they are Amazing animals and you raise them well can be even poppy dog tamed

First of all, and most importantly, I think it's awesome that you're taking on such a mistreated animal and going above and beyond to make its life the best it can be. So much respect for that. Secondly, you look amazing! The whole look you're sporting in this vid is stunning. Thirdly, and completely unrelated to everything in this video... Have you considered getting a chest piece? If you've talked about that in a previous video then I apologize, haha. I just really love hearing about other people's tattoos and ideas.
