  • Three missing Squamish climbers are in the area of Atwell Peak. Search and Rescue have been attempting to get to them almost a week, but the weather is hampering all rescue efforts.

Knowing the area my best guess is an avalanche or a crevasse. In the case of a smaller avalanche they may be found by the end of the summer. All other possibilities would have them come out of the glacier in 50-100 years. Rest in peace buddies, and I wish a lot of strength to their families.

Yes, but I hope by a complete miracle of God, they are found alive.

@@missinginbc I know that hope is the last thing to die, and it is not my intention to take it from you. I can hear your suffering between the words you write. But 2 weeks is not survivable in that harsch environment. Not without food and without drinking water. I pray that they be found alive, but realistically we can thank God if their bodies are found by some miracle. This was a winter with exceptionally little snow. The crevasses are huge up there and need many meters of snow cover for safe crossing. One thing I was able to observe since 2005 was a very significant widening and extension of cracks and crevasses. The climate warming has started to create huge cracks and caverns under a few inches of superficial ice since a couple of years. You stand in late summer on the glacier, just see ice, but when you get a chance to make a peek into the sides by an open crevasse, numerous huge caverns under the ice can be observed. Anybody who falls into such holes will disappear for many dozens of years until he comes out at the glacier tongue in some unknown future. I am very sorry what happened to them. I pray that they have found peace and that they be in a better world. Their families need a lot of strength. I cannot imagine to lose a son or a daughter. The pain would be overwhelming. I myself stopped stepping on the glaciers in the area since at least 10 years for above mentioned reasons.
My personal advice to anybody who wishes to step on our glaciers in the area: study the properties and type of crevasses on tropical glaciers (e.g. Peru, Ecuador), which are quite different from our mid latitude glaciers and you will get the idea what expects you up there in these times of warming.

I've been a mountain guide in ranges around the world. I'm from Portland and Seattle and have climbed extensively in BC. While in Oregon Mountain Rescue back it the day one could tell avalanche issues compared to falls and such. I would say these fellows where a month ahead of coast range safe mountaineering.

People nowadays seem to be under the false impression that British Columbia is a Disney park , give your heads a shake.......you can die within sight of the city, please conduct yourselves accordingly and plan ahead for any occurrence

You must be referencing Instagrammers, as actually mountaineering people know exactly how technical and unforgiving our terrain is/can be.

I agree, however these climbers were experienced and knew the area. I have lived in the area and still live close to Squamish. I am surprised that they chose to climb such a steep peak with snow this time of year. But maybe they knew something that I didn't. It is sad, and they are so young. I hope that they will be found soon.

The families have asked the police to not release the names. All that I do know is that they are aged 25-35. And that they are known to the area.
