  • Official Sound System Culture History: Metro Down Beat Sound System EXCLUSIVE Interview [EST 1958]
Metro Down Beat, still considered the world's number one sound.
From humble beginnings arriving in racist Britain in 1956. Metro decided to build the number one sound, releasing Metro Down Beat Sound System in 1958.
Building the number one sound was not an easy task for Metro, facing racists trying to shut black people businesses down. To as the sound system build and rise up Reggae music internationally from England, all the new sounds trying to take Metros number one spot.
Humble Metro Down Beat never called himself the number one sound as he did rise to the heights of heights, he always wanted people to call him the number one if that's how they felt, but Metro certainly had the work ethics to make sure people never took his name out of their mouth. Some of which were sound systems he considered the best in the world. The Orginal Coxson for one, himself stood up in Metros dance one evening and told him, "Your sound is the most powerful sound me did ever hear inna me life!"
Metro Down Beat has been undoubted, one of the most influential influences in sound system business. From launching many hits, reggae lovers still enjoy to this day, to inspiring many famous sound systems, to the friendships in the industry he established.
Metro Down Beat dominated Sound Systems until he, unfortunately, lost an eye. After many operations, he was forced to fall back into behind the scenes, where he continued building amplifiers for the top sounds and new upcoming sounds.
This is a little part of Reggae History captured with Don Sinclair.
The full story is eagerly anticipated and coming soon from the Publishing House, London's Finest Distribution.

The old man would love this: as a yute he kept talking about Wong's Tom the Great Sebastian sound (c. 1950) and to see another sound man from the 50's is like gold. Sinclair, glad you have this documented.

This interview reminds me of my Dad, he used to build house of joy boxes & use 18” & 15” Goodmans & Fane speakers, an 800 watt valve amplifier with KT88s in a case with the pretty lights & a Garrard 4HF turntable. Nuff soundmen loved my Dads system especially the amplifier case & his boxes as they were so pretty to look at. Unfortunately when my Dad died my brother destroyed the system, some people don’t know the value of things, my Dad passed in 2009 & I’ve been angry ever since.
