    This kind of thing is what I loved PPC Mag for. A radial engine in a Mini, Audi 5 pot in a 944, rear mount turbo on a 205... They all have the same appeal as this does to me. Someone following their own path with a build is what it was all about IMO. Glad to see the videos are in the same vein.

    This is brilliant. It is NOT 'destroying' a classic. It can be put back to petrol. Banger racing, destruction derbys etc are the ones that destroy cars.
    I used to be a big viewer of Fully Charged. When it first started they'd have odd and interesting electric vehicles made in sheds or at universities. Now it's become a new car magazine type show and I really miss watching people doing home conversions so this video is 10/10 from me. I'm slowly building an electric 3 wheeler and one day will convert my kit car to electric.
    Steam, petrol, diesel, electric, compressed air, hydrogen, methane, LPG... they're all good.

    Love the ingenuity and imagination used to create this. Hats off to the chaps responsible 👏🏼 By the sounds of it they saved a MK2 Golf that was going no where but the scrap heap as well, so more brownie points for that 👏🏼 Sounds crazy but if I ever have the money I'd love to convert my Berlingo van to EV. Lots of sensible reasons why I'd like to do it, but I also rather like the idea of having a "one off" Berlingo/EV sleeper 😆

    Great effort. Some silly bastards in the comments whining about their petrol god being offended. There’s certainly no soul in an EV and lithium is a questionable solution to the problem presented by the current narrative, but they engineered this themselves with sympathy for the Golf as a lockdown project.

    Great episode this. Im bunging the same electric motor into a '69 Karmann Ghia and expect similar performance and range. It was a rusty horror, rhd conversion, etc, so not one for the purists anyway. Well done PPC!

    Another great video Guys, thats why I like Practical Performance Car, we build cars to suit us like Sleeper Panda's, LS Lowered Jags to Electric Golf's. I like the idea of converting a retro to EV and just keeping the car as stock as it can be.

    These DIY EV conversions are getting very popular now , some may say that this conversion didn't go far enough by not using the Tesla drivetrain but it was build to the needs of the owner. The potential money recouped by selling off the unused tesla motors and batteries would pay for the conversion and restoration of the Golf . There are plenty of others with massive EV knowledge or deep pockets who have used the Tesla drivetrain in conversions but end up spending lots of money on fabrication and driveshafts . Most people don't comprehend the torque from an electric motor and an entry level conversion using a Leaf motor would destroy a standard gearbox or driveshaft like it was crumbling a digestive 🤔. There is growing aftermarket support for these conversions but it can be expensive, mind you a rebuild on a modern diesel would make your eyes water too .

    Cool! Not exactly the first ev converted car, but it's built at home and they did think about weight distribution and the cars original feel, and that I thought was the most interesting part. Really hope there's some future for EV's with some PPC-thrill/character 🙂

    Nice build. I could be converted back. A good project doing something together as a family. The results are not more important than the process. Getting this result - You've deserved the braggin' rights. Restomods are great for preserving older cars that otherwise wouldn't be on the road. Cars are meant to be driven. I know some collectors hardly any of their vehicles are strictly speaking in an original state. Some parts are made of unobtainium why some parts are replaced and stored for the future. A lot earns a little on the side with their vehicles being hired for all sorts of advertising - weddings only the imagination being the limit. It helps preserving their cars - most people I know are enthusiastic people with a lot less money than love for cars. In a lot of cases eventually ending up in restoring the car(s) of their dreams. They tend to have a secret project hidden somewhere. It often takes decades to materialize in reality. I don't envy people knowing the dedication, love, time AND money it took. I've restored scooters and mopeds and an road legal offroader - because you get this strange disease without a cure... And might end up building something that's probably not good for your wallet, health or license... But it certainly tests your marriage... You get a cease fire working both ways... Don't ask for the price and just accept it was necessary. Due to back problems - I just enjoy the works of others. I might have chosen differently - but you've got to respect it's not just a vehicle. It's their choice and dream. It doesn't have to be perfect or costing a fortune... You might not have quite the skills, nor money and tools to make it perfect. At times it's quite impressive what people have made out of close to nothing.
    This vehicle is proof of getting something unique - passion and learning along the way (at times the hard way) gets you a long way. I only them envy one thing. They've most likely have learned skills surpassing a lot of mine. You've definitely got my respect in every meaning of the word.

      So he's used less than half the Tesla, it takes between 1/4 to nearly half a day to refuel compared to 10 mins & has a 1/3 of the range on a good day ( I presume one up) & that's progress! Na I stick to LPG or get a hydrogen one.

      Keep enjoying your priuis

    • @craigwalker4211
      @craigwalker4211 6 місяців тому +3

      Will ask the builder what's the range & how long does it take to charge,
      His reply 130 miles I built it to get to my brother's 116 miles away to full recharge depending on method between 5 to 10 hours.
      A petrol version would take approx 10 mins to fully fill the tank with a range of circa 300 miles.

    • @mikadavies660
      @mikadavies660 6 місяців тому +1

      @craigwalker4211 I agree that a diesel we have takes 20 to 30mins to drive and fill up and does 500 miles. It does of course cost £70 to fill. The wife's EV fills up while we are in bed sleeping, but most importantly it costs £4 and she drives it all week for that £4. There are advantages to both vehicles. It important to know what you need. This guy needs to bomb about and sometimes drive to his brother. Similar for most people with a motorbike. He built it for his needs. The original Tesla would be quite different.

      @@ppcmagazine Volkswagen actually built its first electric hatchback way back in 1976,
      Mk1 Golf landed, and within two years of its introduction VW engineers had turned a few they had laying around into rudimentary EVs. Eventually in 1981 it launched the CityStromer (‘strom’ is German for electricity) - an all-electric Mk1 Golf built in collaboration with German utility company RWE. Second- and third-generation CityStromers landed in 1985 and 1993 respectively.
      Volkswagen has been doing electric cars since the early Seventies. Its first was a T2 Transporter with a whopping 850kg lead-acid battery pack, between 30 and 50 miles of range and a 22bhp motor for 0-30mph (its top speed was only 46mph…) in a dizzying 12 seconds.
