- At least 17 people have died and about 60 are missing - including many children - after two ships were wrecked off the coast of southern Italy.
A rescue ship run by a German aid group picked up 51 people thought to be migrants from a sinking wooden vessel in the first of two shipwrecks.
RESQSHIP said two of the 51 were unconscious and had to be "cut free with an axe".

Am an Indian migrant/lived in Asia Middle East/Africa. Charities/UN have encouraged people smugglers by providing so called Compassionate rescues. Business is booming despite the deaths and smugglers feel if for example 100 die 10000 make it. People smugglers in India operated in the fifties, Must be settled at a diplomatic level but West is too afraid. Whole world/Leaders have seen these images but want unrest in Europe/West.

They are not close to Turkey in terms culture at all! Do all the European countries considered same? For example, does Italy similar to Greece? They are both christian majority countries. As one comment suggests 3 African convicts threw a couple overboard and stole their yacht. But the story was hushed up. So not just people smugglers but European Politicians Charities Doctors without Borders all have their noses in the trough. The traffickers don't go around forcing people to go on these journeys though. People pay them to do so. If the EU politicians had any balls they'd set up a naval patrol to turn back these boats at point of origin.
This is exactly the problem _ our twisted concept of compassion for a few today means misery for the many tomorrow. We need to get seriously tough, take difficult decisions and not back down. If we’d done this two summers ago all those people would be safe at home in their own countries right now.
