And he wanted to get another possible mech from partial tavern refresh. there is also an ele that gets stronger from every ele you play. Not that it was really relevant for this game.
I think it was to fill the tavern with more minions when his turn started, not sure what the best play would have been but it seems no choices mattered this game
He almost died and the 9 turns later he won? Triple brann and 7 kalis ? Did the game last till turn 26? Did he have the greater trinket duplicate? Was he using perma gold dragons?

The Zephrys buddy also counts cards in hand, I think the confusion stems from there. Since it's kind of sort of the same effect.

It says "Minion you control" , that is very explicit.
You don't control minions in your hand, it never worked like that, only board
