    I went to my first fighting game tourney last month and I was admittedly the lurker at the beginning. But then I was standing right next to this guy around my age who was ALSO lurking. 5-10 mins of just standing there watching matches and I finally said fuck it and introduced myself, said it was my first tournament. Dude looked absolutely RELIEVED and said it was his first tournament too. Played some matches after we got knocked out of bracket and just had a good time, I met some other really cool people too. Jiyuna's right, introduce yourself!! :)

    I've run into people who fall under 4/5 of these characteristics lmao They'd never introduce themselves, force their way into your conversation and talk your ear off, mooch off of kindness (especially if food is involved), and then finally say "Oh I'm not even really into ______, I'm here just because it sounded fun/I was in the area."
    Absolutely cursed encounters.

    I met a Kevin, The Chatter, The Lurker, No gamblers yet, and the drifter was a friend of my. To get out of the Lurker Zone(I used to be one) I suggest going to casuals and offer to play that way its not that awkward. If you bad at the game politely ask for tips and if your solid at the game people will respect you and make sure to get player information that way you can build relationships with your community. Or try to go with a friend and if you are that friend make sure to introduce that friend. great Video Jiyuna. I think we need ones for:
    6. The Community Dad/Mom the old player who looks out for everyone and everyone respect regardless if he is good or not.
    7. The fighting game foreigner the guy who may be a Street Fighter player but has no experience playing Blazblue but likes and ask question just to learn about it. You offer to let him play but he never plays.
    8. The comedian the guy who knows how to make everyone laugh and trendset things during tournament. (Jiyuna, Tasty Steve, Aris, Shiosha, and etc)
    9. The casual beast is the guy who may not take the game that serious but he can do all the high execution stuff and is solid at everything but he super not hardcore at it. Though his skill proves other wise
    10. One and doner the guy who enters a tournament and might be pretty decent to good but never shows up again.

      This is what I'm looking forward to again for EVO. When EVO started towards the beginning of August they ran alongside DEFCON so there was that warning for folks to be careful using hotel internet. Back in 2016/17 an event called 'Well Rounded' ran alongside EVO weekend. Which was an event aimed for Big Beautiful Women so that weekend the night life spots close by were populated with BBWs.

    "Gamblers gonna gamble"
    Couldn't have put it better. If you wanna hang with the gambler, make small bets. Like, not even all the change in your pocket. If he's a true gambler, he'll take the bet. If he's trying to score, it ain't worth his time.
    Make sure you know the difference between these two subsets of gambler.

    The Parent
    Cosplayer
    The Filmmaker/UA-camr
    The MOBA guy who thinks every other e-sport is lame
    The Geezer looking for the Pacman/Galaga setup

    I love seeing the "anime protagonist" this guy is usually the best player out of his friends. This is usually his first tournament, and he is so stoked to show up and make him self known to the scene. He dreams of playing daigo in the finals. He usually ends up drowning in pools, and his weekend is ruined.
    Also that wedding was at combo breaker 2018. That shit was wild. I have met a Kevin at almost every major I've gone to.

    I used to be the chatter back in the day. Eventually as I got older and clamed down, I got batter at stopping myself once I realized I was nerding out. I REFUSE to make youtube videos. My endless rambles on the topic of French Bread's obscure shovelware back when they were known as Watanabe are for the ears of that poor bastard just waiting for his set ONLY.

    • @mikaelamonsterland
      @mikaelamonsterland 3 роки тому +8

      that sounds super interesting though, i wanna know about french breads crappy old games

    • @Deleted_Alt
      @Deleted_Alt 3 роки тому +42

      @@mikaelamonsterland Believe it or not, they started off making fighting games based off VNs before even Melty Blood! Back in 1998 they made the super budget, but super fun, The Queen of Heart '98. A fighting game featuring chibi version of characters from the VN "To Heart". The game sold enough to get a sequel the very next year, The Queen of Heart '99. Not only was that an improvement on the original, it showed Watanabe's interest in the competitive scene as they took the time to improve the balance further with a second release known as The Queen of Heart '99 SE (Second Edition). Just a year after that We got The Queen of Heart 2001, with the main title of Party's Breaker. This game was quite the interesting one as it now included some characters from the dating sim ComiPa. From there things got even weirder, with Glove on Fight. This basically looked like a newgrounds flash game and had characters from various series including Kanon characters and even Dejiko from Di Gi Charat. The game was far less of a traditional fighter, focusing more on boxing gameplay with a balance of punching and dodging. It did get a sequel that was much improved over the first, but there was something special about seeing Dejiko be a literal gorilla beating the shit out of Ayu for the first time. Legit look up her gameplay. Arms down, no brow havin' gorilla ass pose. Finally they made Melty Blood, saw that sweet sweet parking lot tourney money, and decided they were too good to be called Watanabe anymore and changed to French Bread shortly after.
      Speaking of Kanon, one of their non-fighting game games from back then was a side scrolling beat 'em up known as Mamono Hunter Mai which was a spinoff from Kanon. It was pretty fun honestly. Other than that they made Air Flight: The 61th Winter(not a typo, that's how it's written on the box art)which I never played. By the looks of it, it's some weird ass Flicky knock-off where you collect egg looking cats and take them to the exit. It's also based off a VN known as AIR.
      They still made shovelware as French Bread, like Drill Milky Punch which was a competitive top down game with age(porn game devs who made Muv-Luv) characters where you tried to kill more enemies than everyone else but oh man... it's a weird one. I'll leave it to you to look up some gameplay but it's not what you'd expect from a game featuring porn game characters.
      These games are all on PC since they were mostly doujin tier titles (legit I think they used to debut the games at comiket) but they're so old you might not be able to play on modern hardware. Personally I still cry for my old copy of '99 SE as it sits there, waiting for a Windows 98 PC to play it once more. I really should just set up a Windows 98 sandbox already. I hope you get to play some of these games eventually since they're all pretty fun honestly.

    I'm gonna be honest with you, guys. There's been moments where I was the drifter and times where I had to deal with drifters, and in my defense I must say that one time I was the drifter I had the money for everything, except the hotel room, so me and my partner coincided with some friends from our same city at the event by chance. The original plan was to crash in a friends' house and then just go to the tournament venue during the event, but since we happened to meet our people there, we just tagged along. However, there were already like 10 people inside the room, and it got very uncomfortable for me and my partner to just stay there (mostly because the heat and *THE SMELL*) but lucky us, we meet this dude who, for some reason, had a room all by himself so he invited us to crash on his room.
    As for the time we had to deal with a drifter was one time we brought a guy from our local community to a tournament, and he had no money to travel and for the hotel, so we agreed to aid him as long as he will pay us later... He never payed us back, and tbh, bringing him with us was a mistake, because he behaved way too obnoxiously and prick-ish the whole time he was with us...

    If I showed up in any offline thing I would 100% be a lurker. When I'm in a room full of strangers it might take _hours_ before I'm comfortable saying anything, I'm just here to watch the conversation happen for the most part.

    I tend to be a bit of all of these at a tournament depending on context. If I'm watching a game I don't understand I am the lurker. If I'm watching/playing a game I know about I'm the chatter. I don't pursue gambling but if someone asks I'll challenge. If I'm too tired to go back to my room I drift.

    Went to CEO this past June, my first major FGC, as a spectator and sure enough, I met a Chatter as soon as I got in line to enter. lol
    He was a nice enough dude though, so it was all good.

    Oh my god the chatter pass-off used to be known as the Uncle J pass-off in my family... he wouldn't ever stop talking train carriages so the only way to enjoy yourself was to inflict him on others

    I'm kind of both the Kevin and the lurker. Social anxiety means I'm just waiting to find a way to be social but when I do, I'll talk about anything else to not look stupid. You end up making random friends just shooting the shit and being like "I don't even know what this is" once you break through the shyness.

    Shoutouts to the dudes that show up in their work clothes, go 0-2, and leave immediately. 50/50 they either just got off work or had a shift later, but you'll never find out.
