- hello and welcome to my apparently dickinson themed youtube channel!
I started this video after first seeing the show because I absolutely fell in love with Sue. I'll admit, I am a sucker for a sob story, or more accurately, for a character who has had tragedy in their life but still manages to remain a decent human being and not play the victim.
Sue is supposed to be how old in the show, twenty-ish? younger maybe? and she's already had to deal with the death of her whole family, being moved around her whole life, entering adulthood with nothing to her name and debts because of her whole family's funerals. I mean, that is a LOT.
I think it's particularly fascinating how in the show, both she and Emily are inevitably linked with death, which I think is in some twisted way part of the reason Emily loves Sue so much. But the main difference is Sue does not want to be, because she is the one who has experienced it in her life over and over, and she does not romanticise it as Emily does.
Her life has made her rational and practical and I believe she does love both Emily and Austin, if in different ways. She shares an emotional, intellectual bond with Emily that she could never have with Austin, but he gives her the stability in every sense - that she has never had, and Emily couldn't give her as much as she might want to. A home, financial security, a family, in every sense. It's almost ironic how she becomes a Dickinson anyway.
Don't get me started on the whole governess in Boston storyline. I am afraid of where that might be going in season 2 since she's pregnant - which, historically she did not have a child so young so whichever way this story goes, it's going to be more pain for poor Sue.
I know this song is quite over used but I feel like it fits Sue pretty well. All of Billie's music is obviously very fitting for the show really. But this one in particular I feel captures Sue's emotions - she acts the way she is supposed to act but cannot make herself feel the way she is supposed to feel. I think she is constantly holding back and therefore kind of constantly faking it a bit, which is a lot. And that line "I'll only hurt you if you let me" I thought was fitting with her telling Emily she thought she could keep both her and Austin for herself. I really liked that moment. It's Sue and Emily being completely honest with each other as they always were, as they always will be. Knowing nothing they say or do could ultimately sever the bond they share. I think it's beautiful.
I hope we'll get some season 2 news soon enough. I have to say I've been taking for granted that it will come out in November like S1 did. I hope that is the case because there's only so many videos I can make with the episodes I have (lie, I could keep at it for months but nobody tell Apple TV).

when you search about susan gilbert..there was something about her that emily and her brother fall fo her. shes a charismatic and one of the most graceful woman.
ughhh this song makes me cry. Sue is my favorite character after Emily. This video highlights all the depth in her character that's difficult to be put in words. Can't wait for season 2.

I love this edit too and your db! I love it when editors put their opinion too, it's a way to interact with the creators and other vidders. I agree she has lived a practical life and has lost so much already? And the way she keeps saying ''it's too much' so much makes you realise how much she is suffocating. I see this is only from S1 but it applies even more in S2.
