I was born in 1989 and growing up I always thought the epitome of cool were people like Peter Cushing, David Niven, Christopher Lee, George Sanders, Roger Moore etc, the gentleman actor. Easy, charming, amusing, self-deprecating, the quintessential British gent, seldom seen today ofcouse but I still think they're much cooler and so much more admirable than any of the alternatives my generation was graced with!
All fantastic characters. Have all of their biographies on my shelf; George Sanders is rare but worth hunting down. My great auntie was given a lift by David Niven back when she lived in France - exactly as youd expect him to be she said.
In my opinion, Peter Cushing was the best actor ever. He was a legend in his own life time. He never received a Knighthood, which he definitely deserved for his charity work & for his contribution to the acting profession, over meny years. But he was loved by his fans world wide. So Peter may God's Grace & Blessings be with you in heaven with your beloved wife Helen Always.
He was such a class act, so many of his generation were. Not only that, he was a beast of an actor and not just necessarily because he was fantastic with horror roles, he was a genuinely great performer who gave it his all
I was watching an interview with Scottish actor Stephen McCole and he was saying even as recently as the 90's when he trained you always had to do singing and dancing as part of your acting classes, so I think that was always something people learned, although I'm not sure if that's the case now, these days folk just need to look good and that's it, they're officially now an actor, which is a shame as the quality dips, although there are still some extremely good actors kicking about

A classic from the vintage years of British television, when almost half the population were glued to Eric and Ernie. Their guests were real celebrities, like Peter Cushing here. I loved the reference to Whitstable and Peter's 'I'm surprised it didn't reach me'...
I grew up on Peter Cushing. Every year at Halloween he is featured in my yard. My children all know who he is. Peter I miss you and love you so very much.
Considering your comment is 2 years old, I doubt you'll even see this, but, I must know: What do you mean "he's featured in my yard"? No one knows where his body is interred...sooooo.
Here's the thing, comedy is usually written for the age. Morecombe & Wise were always the must watch Christmas special on TV when I was growing up. The comedy was simple but effective. Of course you knew what Eric Morecombe would do in most situations and Ernie Wise' reaction to it. The anticipation following Eric's look into the camera, at you, was always humorous. Today, the comics have to rely on semi to offensive humour to get a laugh from the audience. Just what have we lost? An age of innocence?
THE best comedy double-act since Laurel and Hardy! Beautiful comedy from true gentlemen and who had true stars on their shows. No egos seen anywhere! Thank you for posting.
I generally don't give a stuff about "celebrities" but when Eric died I was heartbroken. A piece of Britain died with him. The upside was that Ernie dealt with everything beautifully over the ensuing years, he was brilliant also.
I did too. I felt that I’d lost a very close relative and, even now, it still hurts that he’s gone. There’ll never be another comedian like Eric Morecambe.
@@Yuurei21 He was given his OBE. We have only yesterday posted a reminder feature about this on the PCASUK facebook page and website too. I guess it's a mystery why he was never awarded a knighthood. After his retirement he was beginning to have the time to do more charity work, which is one of the 'important' features that the awards commission looks for. It was at this time that Peter became ill and was fighting cancer. He managed to live another 15 years, without medications or chemotherapy. It is usually I believe a process, of being awarded an OBE that starts the path to a Knighthood.... Peter just ran out of time. As Christopher Lee said at the time, 'It was too little, too late'. Peter was a very humble man, and maybe others had suggested his awards and acknowledgements and Peter was approached... he may have declined! It wouldn't be the first, maybe he thought the OBE was enough . . difficult to tell. I had the good fortune to meet Peter while he was filming in the City of London in 1984/5. He afforded me a good 20 minutes of his time in between breaks. He was painfully thin and spoke so lovingly of his recently departed wife. A very softly spoken and kind elderly gentleman I could ever wish to have met. RIP Sir Peter. I will never forget you
The brilliant Peter Cushing. One of the few celebrities I would have liked to have met. Such wonderful stories. I like the way Peter keeps beginning to corpse, but as a true professional stays in character. Which must have been very difficult with Eric.
A good friend of mine was a trainee waiter at Browns Hotel in 1979 and a regular guest was Peter Cushing. My friend said that he was very kind and always asked him how he was getting on.
@@overcompensation5354 Very cool! Even the film crew members who found him fretting about his props and his makeup a bit tiresome always seem to describe him as extremely polite regardless of the other person's status. It's one of the better ways of gauging people's character, I feel.
The idea of a tv sketch where the leads are wearing three-piece suits and ties and the guest star is wearing suit, tie (possibly silk), and "odd" waistcoat (ie, different from the suit)...wouldn't find that today, I would think.

No question - why do knighthoods come too late or not at all? Sir Christopher Lee was knighted in 2009 at age 87 - he died 6 years later aged 93. He and Peter Cushing deserved knighthoods in their sixties, after they had more than proved themselves worthy. They would then have had some years ahead of them to enjoy the honour! June Whitfield was made a Dame in 2017, aged 92 - she died the following year! Her career was long and consistently impressive, again why was she not honoured with the highest award 20 years earlier? Peter Cushing is not alone in missing out on the Queen's top accolade - the list of distinguished entertainers who deserved to be called Sir or Dame is long - Morecambe and Wise, Ronnie Barker, Les Dawson, Beryl Reid, Joyce Grenfell, Victoria Wood - I could go on.

GREAT routine even though it's flawed it only adds to the innocence of the time. A part of the Morecambe and wise shows that I looked forward to. Cushing so amiable.
The flaws were part of the charm. They'd get huge stars to agree to leave their comfort zone and do so with very little rehearsal and minimal takes.....and let the chips fall as they may. It was called risk, humility, talent, humour. I loved it then. I love it now.

Gotta give a huge amount of credit to Peter Cushing, one of the all time greats and very happy to be the butt of M & W’s jokes. Absolute superstar.
Spot on. There's a reciprocal respect there. All absolute masters of their crafts.

Peter was absolute class. So too were Eric and Ernie. I especially loved Eric. Very funny man.
Loved Peter on Star wars. Carrie said it was hard to be nasty to him. She couldn't even pretend to hate him. Such a nice kind man.
His boots were too small for his feet, so in medium shots and close-ups, he wore a pair of his own bedroom slippers!
Not a method actor, then…
Peter Cushing. Absolute legend. Grew up watching him in the Hammer films. Brings back very happy memories.
Brings back sat behind the couch peeking round in terror for me lol. Hammer at 9 years old. All harmless fun
Never a more graceful and commanding actor than Cushing. One of the true greats.
Absolutely.

Apparently Peter Cushing was a genuinely nice man , not just in front of the camera , This shows he had a lovely sense of humour also ❤️❤️
