I'm Romanian, and I believe this is the best moment in the football's history. Still after so many years I'm glad to see again the goal of Kostadinov. Btw, after 27 years, France never invited Bulgaria for a friendly game, despite they played a friendly game at least once with all at least medium sized nations from Balkans or Eastern Europe.
Thank you, neighbour, I probably wouldn't go that far with the best moment in history, but if only you could see the "explosion" from the winner - 50+ people in a 30 sq. m. hotel foyer, it was mayhem! Happy days :)

Бог е Българин! What a moment, thriller end to a tight match. This was the rise of the wonderful Bulgarian football generation. I remember, before the World Cup in 1994, there was a sticker album in the kiosks, and we, primary school kids in the town of Ohrid (Republic of Macedonia), were collecting them. For the first time, it was an Upper Deck (an American publisher) rather than a Panini album. The stickers were larger. And I discovered the Bulgarian team. Years prior, the dissolution of the Yugoslav team occurred, the new republics had minor to none international experience, and this was a very pleasant surprise. This was the team many of us supported (as the closest neighbor country). Many thrilling matches, until that unfortunate, unfair with Italy. Very disappointed were we and angry, how the referee didn't see the obvious hand play. I remember, someone saying, how Baba Vanga foretold (predicted) that the final would be played by teams with first letter B. That should have been Bulgaria and Brasil. I still have the sticker album, and occasionally open it to remember those days. Unfortunately, the Bulgarian football team didn't reach these heights again. Thank you for sharing these video moments, so we could go back in time, and once again relive the excitement.

One of the greatest moments in WCQ history! I was absolutely delighted when this happened. Bulgaria were one of the shining lights of the 1994 WC. Thank goodness we weren't denied seeing Stoichkov and co in the USA in 1994. Love Michel Platini's miserable face at about 54 seconds - haha!

In USA 1994 we missed Cantona, Papin, Ginola, Desailly, Deschamps, Blanc, etc .... but saw instead had the joy to watch a fine Bulgarian team with Stoichkov at his prime becoming the top scorer. So I guessed it was destiny !!!!
One of the craziest finishes to a World Cup qualification match ever. Great performance by the Bulgarians, but oh man I know the feeling of the French football people at this moment. I am from Denmark and our national team also suffered a very bitter defeat on this day in 1993. It was against Spain and we missed out of the World Cup because Republic of Ireland had better goal difference. Also in 1989 we were defeated on the last match day, this time against Romania, and missed the qualification for World Cup 1990. Those two defeats and our 1-5 defeat against Spain in the second round of the 1986 World Cup are the most painful defeats in Danish football history.
Like Bulgaria in France 1993, Serbia beated Portugal in similar way on 14th November 2021. and qualified to World cup :)
Similar, but Portugal had a another chance, and made it to Qatar, while France was surely eliminated.
This goal doesn't make any of the "greatest goals" collection on youtube or elsewhere, but it is one of the most dramatic goals ever. It's as dramatic and stunning to look at it now as it was when I watched it in 93. Loved the way he puts his entire body into the shot (look at the follow-through). And how close was Blanc's left toe from blocking the shot, a fraction of an inch!!!
A golden football generation. We caused a furor at the World Cup in the United States. But now Bulgarian football is tragic. And France has become a world and European champion.

Well, so many players like Cantona, Papin, Ginola, Desailly, Deschamps, Blanc passed the WC "94 but instead Stoichkov, Balakov, Trifon Ivanov(RIP), Kostadinov, Hubchev and others replaced them! This were fantastic year for the bulgarian football and the last one... Lets hope, we will see them again soon at the big forum

We have to invest in and develop new and modern football academies, so that we can have quality young generation. We're not rich, so we can't afford to buy good players, instead we should create good players. Sadly the football has been controlled by the mafia, I guess it's the same in Romania, so the mafia simply does not have the intelect and the willingness to think for the future like that.
Thanks for your smart comment. It's nice to see fair-play still exists. Regards from France (and indeed, I was completely devasted in 1993, watching tv, like probably 99% of the country was). We had a strong team at that time and it was a pity to see Sweden and Bulgaria, which were in the same qualifying group as ours, went in the semi-finals. Fortunately, 5 years later, we won our first world cup.
I remember watching this on Eurosport and remembering the English coach saying something to the 4th official. I was 11 years old. Love those times. Great game from Bulgaria.
Morocco also qualified to the WC94.
Zambia was first in the group but their team got killed in a horrific plane accident. Morocco won 1-0 of Zambia.

The result 1:1 was enough for France to qualify for the World Cup but unfortunately for them they conceeded a goal in the last second of the match. Afterwards, in the World Cup Bulgaria showed the world what they are made of and reached 4th place in the tournament. Great years for the bulgarian football !
Aleksandar Ivanov Yeah ,meanwhile for World cup 2018 qualif, Bulgaria and Turkey(nations that played world cup semifinals in their history) will be seeded in the same pot with Faroe Islands, absolutely bizarre that Fifa ranking, and itself the idea of using that ranking for dividing the teams in their pots. domenech recent humiliations were pathetic and disgraceful, but that defeat was pure sadness and sensation of injustice. but the greatest teams always have to face that kind of things. 4 years later, France became world champion and won the euro 2 years after!

Said to me kid brothers back then.. In fairness I was 29 Yr old.. Them nippers bein 17 n 13.. This Bulgarian outfit are earmarked for a solid World Cup campaign.. Got the bullet 1st match vs Nigeria.. Then rallied.. Semi Finalists.. Stoichkov.. Legend.. Worked his socks off.

I don't know why Ginola was seen as the scapegoat. So what if he crossed the ball instead of wasting time? Why should the mighty France national team need to waste time against Bulgaria? There were literally 5 French players who could've prevented that Bulgaria counter attack. What did they do? Nothing.
That's it, a decision mistake is perceived differently than a reaction mistake; same happened with our national team Romania, in 2003 in Copenhagen, the corner kick was executed by Dorinel Munteanu directly into the hands of the Danish goalie in the last seconds, and some people considered him the scapegoat for not qualifying to Euro 2004.
He definitely made a stupid decision and if he had been smarter they would not have lost. Having said that, the things Houllier said and the way that Ginola was scapegoated was disgraceful.
Totally. I mean, if I were the coach, I'd be mad and probably would have punched Ginola in the mouth back in the dressing room. But I'd never have said what he said. It was dishonest, disgraceful, childish and unprofessional. But if I were Ginola, I'd probably have punched Hollier in the mouth for what he said.

to be fair David Ginola is historically linked to France crashing out of World Cup qualifying here. But Gerard Houllier was the man to blame for real. He shamefully let Ginola take the flack for giving the ball away instead of keeping posession. But Houllier can't get away from the fact he was awful as France manager over the course of many games, and not just a few mins of football

I remember the joy that united the nation in difficult times, people celebrated in the streets and fucking forgot about politics. And all thanks to football.
I hope someday Bulgaria have the same team as in 1993/1996 and would please me as a conscious fan.

Being Irish, I like to watch this clip whenever I remember Thierry Henry's handball in the play-off for WC2010....it eases the pain! I remember this match clearly and my heart bled for the French at the time, but that's football - you need to be prepared for the bad days too!

Bulgaria did so well in the 1994 World Cup yet they were seconds away from not qualifying. Ginola was blamed for giving the ball straight to Bulgaria to launch the attack for Kostadinov's goal. The players Bulgaria had in 1994 were a golden generation - Stoichkov, Kostadinov, Balakov, Sirakov, Ivanov, Letchkov, Yordanov, Yankov etc - and they had a brilliant World Cup. It'll be a long time before Bulgaria come up with such a group of great players at the same time.

Remember that Sweden and Bulgaria (the two teams that qualified from this group) went on to claim the 3rd and 4th place in the World Cup 1994. This was an extremely hard qualifying group!
Anyway, take the positive thing from this game. Because of this game, France was more motivated to win the World Cup in their home soil. They even dropped senior player like Cantona, Ginola and Papin and since Euro 1996 opted for Zidane, Henry, Petit who had brought the World Cup to them. I feel that if they advanced to 1994, the story could be different in 1998.

Je me souviens très bien..c' était comme hier..la Bulgarie était très fort...de même les francais étaient forts et meilleurs du groupe...ils ont raté la qualification bêtement..il suffit un nul..mais 2 défaites surprise !! Le pauvre Genola ....et la suite...la majorité de ces joueurs français ont devenu champions du monde.

This defeat is the reason France won the 98 WC, so it did have a positive outcome. Without it, Houllier would have stayed and the team would have never been rebuilt Aime Jacquet style. Cantona and Ginola stayed home, Djorkaeff and Zidane came in. That in itself made a world of difference, classic example of learning from defeat.

Yes it was in 1994's WC Qually. Ginola was not the only one to blame for this, but his mistake was "the last straw": France had blown away a golden chance against Israel, they took the lead in this match (when a draw was good enough for them. And then, Ginola gives away the ball when it was evident that they have to hold it till the final whistle: that's where the débacle started.
Funniest thing in this video is the sign, (1:36) shown after the goal: "France 2 - Bulgarie 1". Yeah, you wish!

France always inconsistent! Didn’t qualify for 94 but won the 98 then was eliminated in the first round of2002 then made it to the final in 2006 then again eliminated in the first round of 2010 and 8 years later won the WC again. They go from bottom to top and then bottom again

@@husseinandout3867 French are Latin, and so very creative, they love to do complicated things, but sometimes ignore the easy tasks that could ruin their entire work, on the other hand, the Germans, as a nation, are obsessed to correctly do the easiest tasks, even when they do hard things, they are actually assembling them up from lots of very tiny easy tasks.
This game was good for a few reasons. Bulgaria were brilliant at USA 94 (something France probably wouldn't have been) , and because of the abuse Ginola came to England and was a fantastic player to watch in the EPL.

Sure the fact it was in France certainly helped, the support was amazing but so was the team. Zidane, Henry, Vieira, Desailly, Blanc, Thuram... I mean the squad was stacked and they confirmed two years later at Euro 2000. Not to mention that experience brought them back to the final in 06. It was their golden generation, every top nation goes through such an era. Spain just had theirs, Germany may be next... We'll see this summer.
