    I like how some of these reasons aren’t really logical or explainable, and kind of boil down to “because you’re you.”

    It's 10.12 pm. I'm working on my website to showcase my writing and my artwork. I was uploading paintings that I did during the worst years of my life, that occurred in the time frame of me being abused, me running away, and me becoming homeless. This poem came up. The imagery struck me so hard that I'm crying and laughing.
    Spending nights walking through the town in a dress but I had no home. I broke into shops and ate the garbage of a McDonald's. It's a year, February is actually the month I reported to the police and spent two weeks in a hospital while welfare had to figure out what to do with me. It's all coming back. This felt like a sign. This felt like it was for me.
    Thank you.

    Today I got a close look at what a 50 year old marriage looks like. I helped my parents refinish the wood floors and counters in their kitchen, a huge job for anyone, but especially for two people in their 70s who care deeply about beautiful things. It’s a process fraught with decisions and constant compromise. Tonight my dad and I ate a steak dinner (courtesy of a neighbor) on the bathroom floor because everywhere else smelled like turpentine while mom sobbed unconsolably in the other room over a devastating mistake she has made. Halfway through his dinner a solution occurred to my dad and he went to test it. Once he saw that the fix would probably work he showed it to my mom. It was quiet support. It was love in difficult times. It was the reason why a marriage works.

    • @RobinTheBot
      @RobinTheBot 4 роки тому +12

      And best, he knew to leave her to it, but even in doing so spent his time eating dinner thinking of how to help. Effortlessly. Absolutely adorable.

      There is a quote the spirit of which I recall: that mature love knows depths that young love cannot dream of, or something to that effect. A leader in my church said it a few years and this reminded me of it. Mature love remembers the details and the big picture. I love that your dad recognized your mom's need to feel her distress, and when he could, he sought to help her mend it. The way you describe it, small and great, simple and tender, brings tears to my eyes and hope to my heart.

    A Taco Bell commercial disguised as a comment: this reminds me of my first year of college. Taco Bell came out with the 7-layer burrito. I met a girl and we were inseparable. We were also flat broke. We usually ate rice or ramen, and had no car. We decided it was worth it once to walk in the cold to Taco Bell and just get 7-layer burritos as a treat.

    I think about this from time to time.
    I love how dastardly the title is. That's not exactly the word. I love how the title has such an effect on how the poem is interpreted.
    As an artist/writer and a business major, I think about communication and influence and marketing a lot. The concept of this being just a commercial makes me think about how advertisers try very hard to invoke emotions and tie those strong, sincere feelings to their product/brand. The idea of relating mountain dew to this enduring, hopeful, domestic love is funny to me. It's also sad, how our humanity is leveraged in the attempt to make a consumer good more appealing.
    Then my brain spins off into, "is marketing art? can it be art? what designates a marketing tactic as cruel, or disingenuous, or deceitful?" yadda yadda.
    Does anyone else think about these aspect? In the comments, I mostly see people responding to the "love poem" content, not the "mountain dew commercial" concept. Interesting.

      Thanks for the thumb up! Just to offer a bit more context, I assigned each room's boxes a colored sticker, then wrote the exact contents on the inside flap. Once we were unpacked, the boxes were broken down and divvied up. Half were posted on Craigslist for free (and picked up same day), and the other half was stored to be repurposed as needed.
      I dunno...I don't feel like a monster ☺
