    On vehicles: 100 percent agree. I would also add that Starfield maps have stuff spread out. The scanner was showing things over a km a way and it would take several minutes to get to at walk/jog speeds, even a jetpack seems too slow. New Atlantis is HUGE and I have to walk everywhere? Not even a golf cart? It feels immersion breaking. Come on Bethesda, you guys did spaceships, why not vehicles?
    On intelligent life: This doesn't bother me. It's a first contact story which makes the game's narrative standout from Mass Effect and other modern sci-fi games. What bugs me is that there are no transhuman races. No robotic characters with personalities beyond Vasco, cybernetics, genetically modified humans, uplifted animals, etc...I feel that 300 years in the future they should be there.
    My final gripe in what otherwise looks like an AMAZING game, is the limited weapon placing on spaceships. It looks like we can only have up to 4 weapons and they are all forward facing, even on the huge freighter ships. No rear facing weapons? Why not?

    • @shilohmc
      @shilohmc Рік тому +1

      Yes, that jet pack has to haul ass to make up for a lack of ground travel. Right, we already have the dilemma of chips and AI now, I can imagine how much of our concept of what being human is in 300 years. On that same note, I wanted to see cybernetic limbs. The space combat explosion and the look of how the ship moves (It looks like the handling has some weight) I really enjoyed but the actual combat looked a little flat. I think that's probably whats been delaying this game, just my pure guess but I think it makes sense. On the up side, I think a lot of modders will be drawn to work on the space combat.

    I'll tell you what I want: Glider wings that fold out of the backpack to make it function like a long distance transport method. If it seems too silly, gate to be accessed only once the player has their Spaceborn Gravity Powers unlocked. Either way, I want faster transport. I want faster transport that DOESN'T require me to remember where it is parked. I want to point myself at a mountain 10km away and boost right on over there in 30 seconds.

    FlashyJoeR (Crime and Punishment, Gun for Hire, Advanced Needs 76) pointed out that the first clip describes a system for dynamically stitching procedural content to bespoke set pieces and other environmental storytelling as the player approaches a planet. This likely signals that pre-combines ala Fallout 4 are not used in Starfield, which is terrific news for modders/mod-makers.

    Just found your channel and immediately suscribed. Very cool, thank you.
    The modding thing got me curious.
    Planets are generated procedural, check.
    Handcrafted content is placed there randomly, check.
    Maybe there is some procedural generated content, too, check.
    So, when I want to create a level 20 dungeon-mod, I THINK there is someting like a catalogue of this and Bethesda´s handcrafted content and the system will randomly place things out of this catalogue in places it fits level-wise in. Is that correct?
    Vehicles:
    While there CAN be an engine/physics limitation, I really think it´s a creative choice, at least before any dlc comes out.
    Imagine you can ride a bike in a Fallout world. Yes, it is fun for what it is and it can be convenient, but you loose much of the immersion and the storytelling of this world. And it would be very easy to flee out of combat. Never was a fan of horses in TES because of the same reasons.
    It IS something else, when the world or planet isn´t that dense though, I see that.
    Near ground flight.
    There are some raiders? Yeah, cool, I have missiles on board, check´em out punks!
    I really think that everything, that let´s you go faster to locations, flying for example, makes the world, every tree, every river every corner which might have something exciting behind it much more irrelevant.

    • @shilohmc
      @shilohmc Рік тому

      Hey thanks for the support and you make some good points. This is my best guess for how a dungeon will work. If you want to make a location for it, you could and create everything in that tile but keep in mind planets seem to have levels, so it will probably have limited leveled enemies Like lvl 5-10. This is why, I think, random encounter dungeons will be better. You could probably create all the enemy's to be character leveled, so whenever your dungeon deploys it will be the correct difficulty on any planet. This allows more chances for your conditions on your Dungeon to be met and show up on a playthrough to be investigated by the player. If you lock it on one planet, there is more of a chance players could miss it, unless you had the quest giver connect to a main city like New Atlantis.
      I get the horse, but I do like it for the long rides. Plus there is other mechanics you can use to make it so you can't use your vehicle to escape. Like an electronic shield or you can only get to a specific location by foot.

    As before I believe the omission of vehicles is a design decision. Ofcourse it's not "realistic" but personally I've never played a game with huge open worlds with vehicles that do exploration better than a Skyrim or Fallout 4. For me I am gonna wait and see how huge these worlds are and then decide whether we even need vehicles.

    I guess some people (not the modders) are going to be worried that location mods, like houses or special stores, won't work because they could end up inside a mountain. I figure modders instead would look into placing their location mod on some "tile" that's randomly placed by the randomization engine, or implement a feature for the player to place the location where they want it. I can actually already imagine some modders creating some framework for placing location mods, helping the player keep track of what they have, where they put them, and making sure they don't interfere with eachother by locking used areas.

    • @shilohmc
      @shilohmc Рік тому

      Yes, that's how I imagine it going but you do bring up a good point of not landing on the same tile as another mission. I figure they have got to have some parameters that keep that scenario from happening though.

    No vehicles because landing zones are not world-sized or circumnavigable. If we had vehicles on the ground, or could fly in the atmosphere, we would go from one side of a ground zone to the other in short order. We're meant to land on the planet, explore the area around our landing zone, which will be big enough for foot and boost pack movement to justify a perceived need to fast travel back to your ship.
    Having said that, the Modding Community will probably add vehicles at some point. Or they might be added in expansions. Perhaps what lies on the other side of the portal is a full Skyrim-scale planetary zone where the greatest archaeological dig in history awaits, requiring large distances to be covered that make driving ground vehicles, or flying in atmosphere a logical course to take. Maybe flying in atmosphere is too much to ask, and they can create the narrative that the atmosphere is far too turbulent to safely fly around freely. They can make the landing animation look terrifying, with the ship being buffeted as it descends, even looking like it's about to be rolled over before it levels out and lands a bit rougher than normal. Add some lightning striking dangerously close to the ship as it's struggling to land and you can believe that nobody in their right mind would attempt sustained flight in that atmosphere.
    But establishing an outpost with a ground vehicle fabricator would be awesome, and would need a significant amount of resources to build. That right there would make exploring some of those uninhabited planets worth it. Most of the entire Shattered Space plot could be tied to fully exploring this vast world, unlocking all the pieces to the next puzzle that could lead us to another portal to a planet in a distant part of the galaxy in an isolated star cluster. Here we could meet our first Alien sentient race, and it was they who once inhabited that now inhospitable planet, and moved to this new one thousands of years ago... But this could only be the beginning and the door could potentially open up for stepping into a much wider universe, where humanity is but a single voice in the cosmic chorus. One thing common to all these potential new races is their psionic abilities, which we know that the player will have access to in the core game. Possibly activated as a result of some sort of metaphysical awakening near endgame. Opening the portal may not be as simple as just assembling the artifacts, but could in fact require psionic abilities to make it work. We would be the first human to unlock the mind's full potential. Therefore we are the ones who will be seen as worthy by the greater races out there. Other humans will follow, but we are the trail blazer.
    If that is where this ends up going, I would so be down with it.
    I'm hoping that Starfield spawns an entire series of official DLC that instead of just being dropped into the mix alongside the main story, is actually linear in nature, progressing from one chapter to the next in a long-running story. All of the core game about finding the planet where the lost civilization once resided. Chapter 2 being about finding all the pieces to the puzzle that leads us to finally making contact, with the third introducing us to that cosmic chorus.

    • @shilohmc
      @shilohmc Рік тому

      I enjoyed reading through your response! I also like the idea of us working to gain the "Key" to the higher species. That we have to find our way to the galaxy at large, I just hope that they don't only give us ruins of an ancient alien race and we find no other living intelligent beings. For me that would be more disappointing than no vehicles, only because modding in aliens makes the core cannon not fit and that's hard for me to fudge my head cannon. I know land vehicles will be modded in one way or the other, and I hope to be able to talk to those mod authors. Also humans developing psionics and PK is a good take, if it is an evolutionary jump, I could believe that.

    I imagine they have a very large set of prefabs that are created, all of them being handcrafted and then are procedurally generated into the world as you approach it, with more variations on that environmental storytelling or quests that are then generated onto these prefabs from another list. This is my interpretation of this system anyways.

    • @shilohmc
      @shilohmc Рік тому

      True, it makes sense. How else could they get you to find a majority of their handcrafted content if its spread over 1000 worlds. To me it makes sense to have conditions, such as environments and/or level that triggers the arrival of an event/quest on almost any planet.

    Really enjoyed your take on PG and the options for shuffling cards into the pack, so to speak. As for vehicles, well imagine if we don’t have the freedom to explore that we all seem to have convinced ourselves that we will. There is a line from TH early in the showcase about exploring an area you have landed in, the speed of a vehicle will shrink the apparent size of that area. Landing anywhere on a planet and going anywhere doesn’t mean that you can do so seamlessly. The only reason for the totally illogical non inclusion of vehicles that I can see is that it will break the illusion, the game is not creating a simulation of a planet but a simulacrum, nothing breaks immersion more than hitting invisible walls at speed.
