I just now heard Merle's version, I can't believe I hadn't heard it before. I love both versions, they are so different!! Wonderful, real hurting lyrics....nothing like the crap on the radio now. I've always been a huge fan of yours, Clint 😊
i've loved this one as well as the whole CD as you'd release them. Clint you are my favorite singer/song-writter for years, and my wife and I thanks you sir. and of course Merle is very deeply missed. Going where the Lonely go.

"Country" music will never be the same again, unfortunately. Guys like George Strait, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Keith Whitley, Randy Travis, Alabama, Sawyer Brown, Brooks & Dunn, Shenandoah, Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart, Hal Ketchum, and a few others saved COUNTRY music back in the 80s and early to mid 90s.
Things have looked fairly promising with a small handful of today's "country" singers, but ultimately, they have always ended up selling out to corporate puppeteers and basically sticking it to their fans. That is exactly why none of these people will ever have my respect. The actual fans of REAL country music have been BEGGING (for a LONG time now) for someone to step up and do what these true STARS of the 80s and 90s did. But to no avail. They're all ruled by greed and fame today. They know they can make much more money as a so called "crossover" artist. You can call it that if you want, I will call them what they are - POP garbage.
Don't comment on this and tell me all about the "one TRUE country star" of today's lineup of pop singers who sometimes pretend to be country singers. I know every name you could possibly throw out there and I wouldn't trade ONE of the artists I listed in the first paragraph of this comment for ALL of today's wannabes. Yes, that includes Jamey Johnson and Chris Stapleton. Speaking of C.S., PLEASE tell me you people don't seriously hear his voice and think he's a COUNTRY singer. I give credit where credit is due. C.S. is an awesome singer. He has one of the best voices in the world. But it's not a COUNTRY voice. That man is straight up blues. By the way, I have nothing in the world against blues. As such, I listen to his songs from time to time. I just don't feel the need to try to convince myself that he's a COUNTRY singer. From everything I know about the guy, he's a really good man. As I said, he's also VERY talented. But a country singer he is not. And he absolutely butchered Tennessee Whisky. The Possum is rolling over in his grave when he hears so called country fans claim that Chris Stapleton's version is better than his! Yes, I've literally heard idiots make that claim.
The artists I listed in the first paragraph are all on par with the greatest TRUE country stars of all time. People like Hank Sr., Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Faron Young, Ferlin Husky, Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Patsy Klein, Loretta Lynn, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Jim Reeves, Bobby Bare, Roger Miller, and MANY more.
Clint, if you happen to see this, THANK YOU! Thank you for providing us with GREAT country music for the past 30 years or so. Also, feel free to buck the trend in today's "country" music and dump all the wannabes that are currently signed by your record label. Give a shot to some guys who would TRULY like to write and play REAL COUNTRY music. WE THE PEOPLE want to hear a LOT more steel guitars, fiddles, and acoustic guitars. And we want lyrics like you and Merle wrote here in this song! George Strait and Alan Jackson would be more than happy to help you save country music one more time. Do it for today's kids who never had the opportunity to grow up listening to NEW music that was worth a dang! By the way, my kids are 6, 8, and 9 years-old and have grown up listening to EVERYBODY I listed in this comment. Well, with the exception of Jamey Johnson and Chris Stapleton. They have literally never heard of Luke Bryan, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean, and their ilk. Nor have they ever heard of Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Drake, Justin Bieber, or any of the other satanists who seem to have brainwashed the majority of today's youth into thinking they are some kind of stars.
Now...bring on the hate from butt-hurt Chris Stapleton fans who think they know what COUNTRY music is. Just know going into it that if my lists of REAL COUNTRY stars are full of people you've never heard of, you're going to lose (BADLY) in a debate about this subject.

Clint had arrived on the charts and was a rising star. On a winter day in northeast Pennsylvania my friends and i started drinking. To keep warm, ya know? So things got to be things and I decided to call my mother who lived 25 miles away. We had been listening to Clint on the cassette tape just before the call. Mom answered the phone. I don't know why, but I put on my best Texas accent, which, wasn't so great to say the least. I told her I was Clint Black. I was calling some people in my fan club just to say hello. (I later learned that he actually did things like that). It took just a little convincing. I told her I was going to be in Allentown Pennsylvania in the summer. I had no idea he would actually do a concert! Allen Jackson opened for him. After talking to mom for about 15 minutes I, or Clint bid farewell. We got a sober friend and we went to visit mom. She came running out on the porch screaming about Clint Black calling. We looked at each other and we laughed and told her no he didnt. She wasn't taking no for an answer. He called and she was telling everybody. When summer came and the shows were announced, she asked if Clint might send some tickets.the joke went on so long it couldn't end. So I bought 4 tickets. I was unemployed and had no money. But I got it. We went and as we are sitting there waiting for the shin dig to start,she looks at me and asked.."Do you think he will mention us"? We laughed and said we doubted it. Great show. Allen Jackson was great. Now that was 30 years or so ago. Give or take a few. And to this day, I haven't told anyone in the family about it. Mom is 74 now, and very sickly. I would love to tell her and clear my conscience. But I better not. Hate to put a strain on the old woman and break her heart..

This song is awesome! So is Clint who not only sings songs but he writes them all too! An amazing country artist! My husband and I travel to see Clint's shows all over the U.S., the most recent show in S. Carolina over this past summer. His voice is timeless and every show is amazing!

I think we all get a little tangled up now and then, some get untangled pretty easy and some try with everything they've got in em and never get undone. When a song gives you that feeling in your stomach and you've got to try to hold back emotions then id say there's a good chance you've been there and lived that...........or your there now.
Clint Black had more hits than people realize. Truly a '90s country legend. I keep hoping for a major comeback from this man, but he wouldn't fit in with today's "country" music. He's too authentic.

I just saw George Strait for the last time sadly... BUT.. am looking forward to seeing Clint Black in Napa in a few weeks! Always one of my favorites... Sad some of hislatest music has been a little less country than his early years because I definitely consider Clint up there with some of the best.... Since I heard him back in 1988 in the corner bar in Nashville, he's been my favorite singer, and was so glad to see him make it so huge, and still be the same guy... god bless you Clint, your music has got me through a lot of tough times... and now 30 years later its still as relevant as it was back when I first heard you singing Merle haggard songs in 1985 or 86 down in the whiskey row bars in Nashville...

I love Clint Black, he's one of my favorites. Great singer and songwriter. Saw him in Shipshewana, Indiana this past summer. He still sounds great! I wish country radio would play him today. Definitely miss his music. Honestly I forgot all about this song, that's easy to do considering how he's had so many good ones. One of his best though for sure, thanks for posting!
