How to Kill a Tree without Cutting It Down

  • Kill a tree the easiest way and with certainty and without having to cut it down. You will also turn a tree that is invasive or unwanted into a "snag" which is great habitat for wildlife. You can even kill a large tree in under 10 minutes. The foam herbicide dispenser described in this video is available from www.greenshoot...
    This video answers critical questions such as:
    0:14 - Can I leave a standing dead tree? As the video makes clear, standing dead trees ("snags") make great wildlife habitat for woodpeckers and pollinators. However, a dead tree will eventually fall, and you have to be sure it will not fall near property, or worse, on people. Therefore, standing dead trees should not be left in areas of high pedestrian traffic.
    0:42 - Should I use herbicide? Herbicide or weed killer will kill a tree faster and with greater ease and certainty. If you prefer not to use herbicide, I recommend our video: How to Kill a Tree without Chemicals, • Kill Tree No Chemicals .
    1:03 - What time of year? Fall and winter are the best times. Springtime is especially bad because the tree is sending sap to feed growing foliage.
    2:21 - how do you use the herbicide? Select the right weed killer such as glyphosate. With glyphosate, mix an herbicide solution with about 20% active ingredients. Use a tool to cut into the bark. This can be a chisel or knife for small trees, a hatchet for bigger trees, and a drill for the larger trees. The objective is to introduce the weed killer into the phloem of the tree which is the liver, inner bark of the tree.
    3:41 - So, for example, with a hatchet, cut through the outer bark. (The inner bark typically will be lighter in color.)
    4:19 - Then, apply foam herbicide into the slit immediately. Don't wait longer than a couple minutes to apply the foam weed killer because otherwise the tree will quickly seal off the wound.
    4:55 - continue cutting slits about an inch apart (and applying herbicide) around the circumference of the tree.
    5:18 - Don't disturb the tree for about a year. Or, better yet, leave it standing as a "snag."
    The advantage of foam herbicide is that it sticks tenaciously to where it is placed and it dissolves slowing allowing the herbicide to absorb over a period of time.
    Don't try old home remedies like pounding copper nails into the tree. These don't work as well. Those copper nails will also make cutting the tree down a lot more problematic.

    My Moringa tree trunks have been kept short, so it's easy to reap the leaves. Now 2 of them are damaging a wall and I want to kill them. What if I if I just keep stripping the leaves as soon as they sprout? I recently killed another kind of tree that way. Will that method work with Moringa?

    • @GreenShoots
      @GreenShoots  7 місяців тому

      I am not familiar with Moringa, other than what i just read on Wikipedia. However, generally stripping foliage from a plant will eventually kill it - for obvious reasons - without leaves, no photosynthesis can take place. It may take some time to use up the stored energy. One good thing about your approach is that, if the plant is one that can send up aerial shoots from roots, you are less likely to stimulate this response by stripping foliage as opposed to cutting the tree down.

    Do you also suggest this method for a large walnut tree? I have a huge shadow in my yard and I can't plant tomatoes for example, thank you un advance

    • @GreenShoots
      @GreenShoots  5 місяців тому

      The method described in this video would work on a walnut, but it would take probably a year for the walnut to die. And, remember, you would have a dead tree in your backyard. Moreover, walnuts as you know produce juglone, a substance that is toxic to many plants. Juglone is stored throughout the tree. It is probably best if you get as much of the tree removed from the location where you want to grow plants like tomatoes. Therefore, I would recommend having it cut down in the fall. If you grind out the stump, that's even better for ensuring the success of your tomatoes. Otherwise, just treat the stump as we suggest in our other videos such as this one:

    Cut out all the hard work by banging a copper nail or two into the trunk at ground level (or below if it's a tree with a TPO). Two minutes spring evening's work and the tree looks as though it died naturally over the summer. So no comebacks from tree huggers or the Local Authority. [edited for typos]

      It sounds like you personally have used this method. Are you aware of any scientific articles supporting it? I would really like to see one. My main concern with the method would be safety. If someone tried to remove the tree later with a chainsaw or even an axe, injury could result. Any thoughts on that?

    • @farrier2708
      @farrier2708 5 років тому +4

      @@GreenShoots : There was a case of a yew tree, with a TPO, in a garden with access for very young children. The Local Authority would not permit its' removal, despite the danger to the kids. This method worked very well. It removed the danger without comebacks from the LA.
      Copper clippings also worked a treat on my unwanted honeysuckle, which, despite other methods, sprouted everywear.
      The beauty of this method is that it is confined to the single plant. it cannot inadvertently affect adjacent plants nor the surrounding soil.
      As far as your safety concerns go, a copper nail presents negligible danger compared with that of say, a ducky stone or steel fencing staples and wire.
      Scientific papers; I know of none. It all boils down to the ancient wisdom my Granddad taught me, more years ago than I care to remember.
      My question is :- If a tree can be legally removed, why bother killing it? Just fire up the chainsaw and fetch it down. That way, you can be certain where and when it will fall.

    • @GreenShoots
      @GreenShoots  5 років тому +1

      If the tree is a yew or other conifer (pine tree for example) and you want to completely remove it - yes! Just cut it down. Very few conifers (with some exceptions) will sprout from a stump. However, if the tree is deciduous, most will sprout from the stump, and, some very aggressively. Tree-of-heaven and aspen are examples. If you are going to cut down a deciduous tree that will resprout from the roots and stump, follow the instructions in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ZZzUu0TZCds/v-deo.html.
      Copper clippings - do you mean you put small pieces of copper on the soil? I would be very careful with this. There are many animals, like sheep and some breeds of dogs, that can easily die from ingesting even small amounts of copper. www.merckvetmanual.com/toxicology/copper-poisoning/overview-of-copper-poisoning

    • @GreenShoots
      @GreenShoots  5 років тому +1

      One clarification - if you are cutting a yew, make sure you leave a stump cut low to the ground - about an inch above ground level.

    • @farrier2708
      @farrier2708 5 років тому +1

      @@GreenShoots : No! NO! Definitely NOT in the soil. Small wedges of copper driven into the stem. Size depends on the plant. The idea is to penetrate the bark and poison the sap. Make sure you insert below any residual buds and they will not sprout, however aggressive. Of course you may need more than one if the girth is large.
      I've no experience with trees like Lombardy Poplar that sprout from the root but I see no reason why the source of nutrient can't be poisoned in the same way.
      Felling the yew tree was no problem. It was the Local Authority that wouldn't allow it to be taken down.
      However, I still question: Why would you want to kill a tree, if you can simply fell it legally?

    What do you recommend for a tree that was cut 2 years ago about 8 inches above the ground and has a few sprouts from the trunk and many sprouts across the lawn and some thick roots of about 1 1/2"? Should we cut the trunk down further and use gylsophate or another method? It is June and so many sprouts coming up spreading far away from the tree. Do we treat the sprouts and the trunk? Should we cut the sprouts to the ground? We are worried about it damaging the foundation of our house so are concerned about leaving treatment until the fall. Do we need to wait until fall or can we go ahead now? Should we use a different chemical given that the tree was cut 2 years ago or just cut the trunk down further and use the glysophate method that you are recommending? I am in Canada so cannot order the Green Shoots product.

      Do you know what kind of tree it is? It obviously sprouts from roots. In that case, I would apply the herbicide in late summer. Cut the trunk down to about 1 inch above ground level. If the wood is still alive, you can treat the perimeter. In addition, make sure you treat every small sprout you can find. You shouldn't have much growth in the trunk between now and late summer that could damage your house.

      Thank you for responding. An arborist came and looked at the trunk and sprouts and said it looked like a plum. We aren’t sure what it was now. After we’d had it planted for a couple of years it began to grow 2” thorns on the branches. Should we wait to treat the sprouts as well or treat those now. They are growing taller by the day likely alarming our neighbours (and me), should we cut the sprouts to the ground now and then let the sprouts grow later summer and treat them when we cut the trunk down to the ground (the trunk is about 10” above ground right now) and treat the trunk? We actually cut it down about 6 months ago. Seemed longer. There are also sprouts growing out of the trunk now.

      Not without permission! Where my dad lives, you're not allowed to mess with ANY plants big or tiny whether it's on your neighbor's property or not. Can't even do it on your own property. You have to ask the owner of the house & the city. Tthe city has to approve it (which takes a long time), most people don't bother. Usually takes a few months for your request to even get to the person in charge. Then whatever they decide, takes just as long or longer to get that information back to you. It takes a year for them to start if they approve (rarely happens). Oh & you pay for all of it, including their drive just to get to your house.

    There must be someway to just bore 2 foot long shafts underneath the tree or use one of those deep root feeder you put on a hose to inject some sort of poison like glyphosate into the root ball or tap root area so the roots absorb and distribute the poison through the entire tree? Wouldn't that work faster and not hack up a trunk unnecessarily?

    • @GreenShoots
      @GreenShoots  Рік тому +2

      Alan K - Your question raises a really important point about herbicides that remain active in soils. You mention glyphosate - glyphosate is not very active in soils. (Glyphosate binds with most soil particles.) This means a nearby plant can't readily take such an herbicide up through its roots. That's a good thing in one way - if you spray foliage of a weed and it drips onto the ground, that dripped glyphosate won't easily move to harm a nearby desirable plant or flow offsite during a rain.
      But, as you surmised, there are certain herbicides that remain active in soils. Use them with caution. Roots of plants go all over the place underground, and you won't know where they are located. If you use a soil active weed killer, you may end up inadvertently giving a big dose of it to a desirable plant and killing it. Also, soil active herbicides can persist a long time in soils - sometimes a year or more. Therefore, you have to be careful about replanting after application of a soil active herbicide.

    Every person has a reason for liking and disliking trees.
    I do not dislike trees, I find then refreshing and neat.
    When I first moved to my new house in another state, I was very fond on the 4 trees on my property. It was summer, the leaves were all green and teh lawn was freshly cut.
    September came and so did the leaves, about knee high. They looked awful. My neighbors came and raked the leaves in the front yard. What a relief and how thankful I was.
    The following year, one of the trees in the front yard started pushing up the foundation, down went tree #1. The following year the tree in back pushed a water pipe apart and caused water to be in the living room.
    This tree also had some form of debris that blew throughout the neighborhood and land on my house as well as the neighbors house. Down went tree #2
    Tree #3 & 4 went down on the side of the house and the side of the house because I got tired of raking leaves up each fall, as I was aging and did not want to pay someone to do this chore.
    I moved last year and now is the owner of about 15 trees that produce pine on my roof and all in the yard All the trees in my yard will eventually be cut down as most of my neighbors have removed the trees from their yards over the years.
    You are not in a position to determine if a person want trees in their yard or not. Each person has to make that and other decisions for themselves.
    You might not agree with t heir decision, however it is their decision.
    I can no longer tend trees and the debris they cause on the roof and they yard. So for me I will eventually have all the trees removed from my yard.

      So do I -- only it's neighbors on both sides. I am very upset about the general law or code that says one can only cut branches and leaves back to the property line and the receiver of any wood or leaves from a neighbor's trees cannot be returned to the neighbor. I think it wold be good if all the property owners in this country, via city or county rules, re-write the code so that a neighbor must keep trees and leaves within the property. Perhaps as much as six inches (but no more) of the neighbor's trees can extend over the fence/property line and those that fall can be returned by the offended neighbor or, within a certain amount of time, the leaves and tree parts must be removed to the offender or be fined or required to hire a professional lawn tender to do the work.

      @GreenShoots  4 роки тому

      For most species of trees, the phloem sap is rising in the spring. Scientists believe most systemic herbicides are carried by the phloem sap. You want the phloem sap to carry that systemic herbicide down to the roots of the tree. This primarily happens when trees are preparing for or are in dormancy - late summer, fall or winter in climates like ours in the U.S. or in Europe. Spring applications do work for some species. However, late summer, fall, and winter ones are the most reliable times.

    • @rogerd4559
      @rogerd4559 4 роки тому

      the reason you do it in the fall is that the sap is receding to the roots and the herbicide will follow the sap to the roots and kill them. If you do it in the spring then the herbicide will be wasted on the leaves as the sap is traveling up

    I wanted to respond to the comments below. They bring up some really important issues.
    First, dead trees (snags) are essential for wildlife in our woodland areas. They provide a storehouse of food and homes for woodpeckers and other birds; they are essential for many pollinators like wild bees. You may not want a snag in your backyard or in an area that creates a hazard, but we definitely need them! If you are interested, just search for "snags wildlife habitat" and you'll find tons of great info.
    Second, yes, you can absolutely kill a tree without herbicide! Please do check out our video on how to kill a tree without chemical ua-cam.com/video/aHj8UMwSMVU/v-deo.html The key points are that it will take time for the tree to die, and it's a more difficult process than one might think. Cause it gets in the way, you have to rake the annoying leaves, it gets on your neighbors' properties (which you can get in trouble for), it blocks sunlight & it attracts birds & bugs. Which means bird stuff all over your yard & house & more bugs will get in your house. If you're phobic of bugs & can't afford to hire professional tree cutters & your stores don't sell the products in this video, you're screwed. Trees are an issue on my yard. They look nice but looks ain't everything.

      Yes, I agree if the tree is in an area where it will pose a risk - near a home, vehicle, walkway, etc. However, they are also essential habitat. As the National Wildlife Federation says: "Dead trees provide vital habitat for more than 1,000 species of wildlife nationwide. They also count as cover and places for wildlife to raise young in the requirements for Certified Wildlife Habitat designation."

    • @GreenShoots
      @GreenShoots  5 років тому

      I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but here are three reasons why killing certain trees (e.g., not old growth trees!!) can be good for the environment. First, many areas of the world originally had grasslands or savannas. Because of the suppression of naturally occurring fires (and the restriction on fires set by native peoples), trees and woody plants have often taken over in these ecosystems. This has led to a decrease in biodiversity. Here's a really good scientific article on this by Zakary Ratajczak: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1890/11-1199.1 Second, even in many forests there are too many trees. Look at a recent article of Nov 29, 2018 in the New York Times entitled "Let the Forests Burn." It talks about how high tree densities lead to unhealthy forests that are greater fire hazards. Third, as discussed below, dead trees and woody debris provide an abundance of habitat for all sorts of threatened and endangered species! I would recommend talking to or reading material from ecologists and botanists where you live (because different ecosystems require different kinds of restoration).
