  • The Tamiya Fast Attack Vehicle (FAV) is a really cool looking RC and I don’t expect much out of it performance wise but in the looks category it is great! I get it all built in this video and go over some of the small things I ran into along the build. Cutting out the decals/sticker was a funny one, not a problem I have run into previously on any other kits. I turned out looking really cool and I will get it out for a run soon.
    You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

    I couldn’t believe it when they re released it in 2011. Grabbed it right away. And they released it again for this Christmas. Do yourself a favour and watch the original promo video from the 80s that was shown in hobby shops at the height of the rc craze. Just a magnificent looking buggy.

      It is a really cool buggy and I am glad I finally got one! It is not a track star but looks absolutely great running around the yard and has a cool bounce to it! I will have to check out the promo video, I ma sure I have seen it but it has been some time. I loved those videos! Thanks for the heads up on it!

    Such a cool, cool buggy, Addam! As always you did a great job on the build and detailing. I had a good chuckle at you explaining how you felt drunk cutting out the body decals 😅 I know exactly what you mean! Great tip about the o rings on the front suspension struts, I think I did something like that on my Lunchbox. Loved the photos at the end, too. Take care pal and have a great week ahead!

      Thanks Mark! It is a really cool and unique buggy! Those decals really make you feel like you have the drunk goggles on for the first couple! After a few you get used to it but man those first few were a trick! The o-rings really help keep the front shocks from clacking so loudly and it is a free upgrade so you can't argue with that LOL! I am glad you enjoyed it and thanks as always for checking it out, take care my friend!

    I always liked the look of this buggy. To me it’s a blend of a wild one and a hornet. I would’ve painted it uniform flat military green with the shark mouths on the side and give it raw aluminum wheels. 👌🏻 Great work as always. 👍🏻

      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому

      I do prefer the shark mouth kit. I am hoping it may happen next year, guess it depends on the sales of this one I assume. I really wanted to go 100% box art with it but soon realized the more I looked at it the less it was going to be possible! Close enough for sure and fingers crossed on the shark mouth version next year!

    Looks so cool...I always thought that was paint and not decals! One of the reasons why I never got one. And the suspension of course. They perform just like a grasshopper. I was a huge GI Joe fan, I had all the cool original off-road vehicles...the good old days Addam. Lots of great memories.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому +1

      On the original is was all paint so yeah a bit more effort to getting it to look good. These decals work very well at mimicking the airbrushed on look of the camo. Although the original had the tan roll cage and side bars so there is a little compromise going on. I assume they went to the black for strength and durability purposes. I have accepted the black parts now and love it. I do need something from Cobra to chase with it, maybe on of those cheap Ripsaw looking tanks painted in black and red to resemble their cool wedge-shaped tanks. That way it would have something to chase! Things were much simpler sitting in the dirt playing with GI Joes back then!

    I'm so pumped to see some many tubers on the FAV train. My first and all time favorite kit. I got it for Christmas from my dad. One of the few good memories of that man but I guess he made the effort.
    I picked up the 2011 the moment it came out and it sits proudly front and center on my shelves.
    I hand painted mine and used the decals on the wild willy.

      It is a really cool looking kit and I am sure you really had a great time with it as a kid. I mean I am having some serious GI Joe flashbacks with mine now! LOL! I am glad it brings back fond memories of your dad, I know the rough parts can stand out more than the pleasant ones sometimes! It is a looker of a buggy and I know once I drive it that it will be all smiles! The Wild Willy would look cool with these decals on it! I contemplated trying to paint them on but once I stuck the first one on it I realized how goo they really do imitating the painted ones!

      Thanks! the decals are very good at looking like airbrushed camo on it! It is kind of crazy this design is 40 years old not and it still looks great great. I think it will be a bit bouncy but not too worried about it as I think the slow drive-by passes with it will be cooler than just trying rip it around full send. Who knows though, once I get it out it may be full throttle like many others LOL!!!

You are going to giggle when you go to cut out the decals, it is like having drunk goggles trying to do the first one or two of them. I agree, not one I really desperately wanted as a kid but now it is super cool. It takes me back to my GI Joe days as a kid! That is awesome looking. As for the box art who cares. Its your buggy make it the way you want.So your way is the right way. And that one if i built it it would never see dirt. Id run it on my carpet to say it ran then to the shelf it be going. Love your builds and videos Addam.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому

      Thanks! It turned out really nice and I wanted to get that cool look from the box onto the car but not all of it was possible. The original one had the cage and nerf bars molded in the tan color. I am not sure why they changed it unless it was due to the tan being too fragile. On the other hand the original you had to paint all the camo by hand so i will take the trade for the great decals it came with! LOL!
      I will get it out and get it dirty but it will be probably be a slower and more deliberate run, kind of a GI Joe on a mission type thing! Who knows it may run really well and I send it full speed! Thanks for the comment and I am glad you are enjoying the videos! take care!

    I had a thought...and it smelled funny...you could get another one of those micro 'knock-offs' from your last video, paint it in camo and strap a gun on it. Then attach it to the FAV like it is a 1/5 RC remote attack vehicle! It would be cool to roll up, and launch the micro RC off the FAV. Then again, my 'good ideas' are usually stupid ideas. 😋

      Not a stupid idea at all, a funny one but certainly not a stupid one! I would have to trim the wing off but I could see that being a fun thing to try! I will put it on the to-do list somewhere around #138 which is not bad at all considering the list is somewhere in the thousands at this point! LOL!

      Yeah for the Wild One they went with the Lexan drive and that whole thing covers up where that original box went. Since there is no other way to attach it besides the rubber band hold down I think they opted to delete it on the WO and it was a good idea! I am hoping the little bit of E6000 glue hold mine on and it doesn't pop off mid run! I just really did not want a rubber band showing on it at all! This alongside the Fireteam would be like Captain America before and after the enhancements made to him! LOL! Lean and small and then beefy and large!!! This was not high on the list of kits I wanted as a kid, not fast or cool enough looking for me at the time but it is truly super cool now! I do like how the stickers made it look like the camo was sprayed on there by hand!

      Thanks! The driver figure did take a little while but it was kind of fun. I started with painting in a bunch random black squiggles on it and then went over that with the brown squiggles in between those and then the green ones in between them. Once all that was done I went back and filled in an spots that needed a little more with small dots of black or brown. It does help to have a rather fine line brush, I think I used a #1 or a #0 brush on it.it gives you a brand new sharpie type line from it. Hopefully you can track down the paints, that really does suck for you guys! Best of luck with the search and have a great weekend Freddy!

    Looking good Addam l have not long done mine and really enjoyed the build, regarding the suspension l enjoy a bit of bounce but did slap on a set of WO oil shocks on the back its definitely worth doing it makes the buggy a lot more capable but doesn't rob it of its fun bouncy performance that it has!
    I used a 2nd set of decals too for a bit more camo that was a cheap easy way to cover up certain plan area's!
    You will have fun with this on track mate l can guarantee it😎

The grass should be dry enough now for me to take it out and get the run video done of it. I do think it could use a tiny bit more camo to it, maybe on or two small ones but they did very well on the decals sheet. Other than feeling drunk trying to cut out the first couple they are great!

    Great job on that driver figure. 👍 My brother recently built the FAV too and he mentioned the same issue with the ESC motor wires not being long enough. Bit of an oversight on Tamiya's part. (Un)fortunately for us in Japan that isn't a problem, as Tamiya kits do not usually ship with an ESC! 😅

      Thank you David. I had fun painting the camo on there even though I was a bit nervous going into it! The motor wires is a bit unfortunate especially for anyone that does not know how to solder or doesn't have the tools to do it. It was great they finally made the switch wire long enough but it was funny because the short wire would have worked in this one, it was just the motor leads were too short... kind of ironic! I know you guys don't get the ESC in your kits which is strange. Take care and have a great weekend!

      It will stick to it but since the black plastics of the roll cage and the side bars are soft and flexible it will want to crack, chip and scratch off fairly easily. For a shelf queen it would be fine but in a few tumble with it driving you would start to notice damage pretty quickly.

      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks Richard! I enjoyed painting the driver up, it was intimidating at first but it really is nothing more than little squiggles and dots. get a good #1 or #0 brush and start with black and put a bunch of squiggles on until you are worried you messed up, then fill it in with some brown ones and then the green ones and next thing you know you have a good camo print. I did go back with the brown and green and add some random dots to fill in any spots that were still showing too much tan. I did all this with it all glued in place, makes it much easier to get a good pattern. Just start with a little and then fill in as you go, no really rules to it. I am sure you will do a great job on it! I am really hoping Santa brings it to you! It is a cool little buggy!

      Yes, the original release of it had everything molded in the tan color. I am not sure why they went with the black parts. Now it is built and I have had time to take it all in I am fine with the black plastics on it.

    Was there any painting of the hard shell? I built my grand hauler and did it in automotive ruby red paint. While even with my lack of painting skill it looks decent, the paint is already flaking. I did primer and let it all dry between coats but is the model paint for hard shell kits different to automotive paints?

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому +1

      You do not really have to paint the body, it is all molded in the tan color and I just left it as is. In the instruction it does tell you paint it but it is going to end up the same color and I chanced it and it turned out looking good. I was only worried the slightly shiny plastic would contrast too much with the matte decals but it looks fine. The only body panels I painted are the battery holders on the sides and the one headlight so you could get away without any spray paint and just hand paint them with the olive drab bottle paint you need for the driver figure camo.
      For off the shelf spray paints I only will use the ones specifically designed for plastics or made for "all surfaces" as the tend to have more chemical bonding agents to them. Most times I don't use a primer either, just paint directly onto the plastic. Many primers are designed for metal and not the smooth, less porous plastics. For the Tamiya TS paints they are designed specifically for plastics and have all the good cancer causing bonding agents in there already LOL! (JK but I am probably right!)

    • @dannyseville2543
      @dannyseville2543 Місяць тому

      @AddamsPlayground the primer i got was supposed to be plastic primer but maybe I still didn't use the right one. You live n learn. I did 2 coats primer, 4 or 3 coats colour and 2 coats gloss clearcoat. Where its done ot looks good but a couple of spots have crumbled where screws went in or 2 parts rub together. The GH is a decent kit but way too many glued parts for my liking.

    You lost me at the frog style drive shafts
    You are a genius with the two black spare O rings

    I didn't think you were complaining at all in the video

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому +1

      They just have the dust boot on them like the Frog, just trailing arms with dog bones. No hex drive! The spare o-rings works great in quieting down the clacky front end, still going to make a little noise but much quieter this way.
      You have to paint the two side battery holders, one front light, the rear lights and then the whole driver figure and cockpit area. The camo bits are all the decals but I think in step 1 or 2 you need to install painted parts and then the driver figure comes into play not to long afterwards. It was a lot easier to paint all that and then build it. The driver figure took some time to get fully painted.
      I always feel like I seem to be complaining or focusing on the negative parts but I just everyone to know the troublesome or confusing parts to help them out. I am glad it did not sound like complaining! Take care my friend and have a great weekend!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah I figured I would risk it and if the decals looked odd against it then I would just spray the whole thing with matte clear and even it all up. It really does not need it and looks great as is. In cases like the black edition or like the grey clod buster I had to paint do to the uneven or blotchiness of the molded plastic but this was perfectly colored and even all the way around.
      The wires being too short would be a really big showstopper for some folks as they might not have the tools or skills to add the extensions or would have to source some to get it finished. Thankfully just a small speed bump in the build for me.
