"The Urban Theme" comes off of the acclaimed 1996 album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite. The album rooted Maxwell’s legacy in quiet storm, funk, jazz, and neo-soul. Maxwell’s departure from the standard R&B of the time was influential in a bigger neo-soul movement that arose in the 90s.

I bought this album about 2 months before "Embrya" came out. I was 16 at the time. The guy at the shop said to me: "You've got good taste. Most kids are into that KC & Jojo stuff - This guy kills the hell out of it." Basically, this album brought me back to the funk! It was like somebody said to me: "This is where you belong!" If I could I would have thanked Maxwell, Amp Fiddler, Leon Ware and especially Wah Wah Watson for bringing me RIGHT back to this world!!! So much FUNK on this record. That BASS on "Dance With Me." "One... two..." WHOA!! Where'd they get that funk from?!
