I do think the best thing about Cabin 3.0 was the flexibility that his saw mill provided to him in terms of building with dimensional lumber for many parts of the construction. I get that he is trying to free himself from reliance upon such machines, but there's a limit to what hand tools can do. Dimensional lumber milled from wood cut on his own land has been the key to making this cabin build spectacular. And the mistakes he made on 2.0 certainly allowed him to "level up" in 3.0.

I am a good “ go for”, assisting my hubby through the 54 years we have been married. He was a “ city slicker” whose dad sat in an office, wearing a suit each day to work. I was ( still am) a country girl whose dad could do anything, and do it well! Over the years, it has been a challenge to work beside him because I had grown up helping my dad, doing and seeing things through my dad’s point of view. I have had to bite my tongue a few times! He, fortunately for me, is not quick tempered and is patient. He is also teachable in some instances when I see how to do something from an angle he had not thought of. We are a good team now! We don’t do much building any more..he is 76 and I am 74. I guarantee we can work circles around many younger couples who give up and hire things done. All this to say, this lady knows a smart, hard working man when I see one! I am thankful for MY man. Be safe. I admit I held my breath a few times tonight as I watched you on that roof…being self reliant and no “ go for” there helping you. At least there in case you fell. Thanks for using safety measures!

I built a slide 24 feet long and then with a rope and a visa grip and attached rope I climbed on the roof and slide the long roof panels up to the peak and screwed the panels to the 2x3 inch perlines. Never lost one of the 52 panels. It just took a lot of time. Stay safe.

Shawn glad to see you’re installing that metal roofing the proper way with the screws on top of the V ! I don’t give a crap what these new wave people say who say the screws should be put in the flat surface of the valleys!! Well Their wrong, metal roofs have been put on homes and businesses for 2 hundred years with nails in the top of the V’s and many old structures still standing. But the water 💦 isn’t gonna stay on the top of the V it’s going down in the valley flats. People can follow this new guideline all they want to but if I install it my screws are going on the top of the V’s at the least place likely to leak. I think these metal companies are in cahoots with the lumber companies To tell people that lie about installing in the flats so they could sell more lumber & metal roofing when things fail in 15-20 years. More so than they would the old traditional way of installing on top of the V’s.

You are 100% correct, I said exactly this when Shawn was putting the roof on his house and all the new "experts" said i was wrong. All those Houses in Australia I put roofs on are apparently wrong..... Funny point but, nearly 100% of the water that hits a roof slides down the valleys in the sheeting, exposing the screws on the flats to far more water, and chances of a leak. Yes, metal roofing screws have rubber washers but they split easily. By putting screws on the flat sections, or in the valleys on the sheeting you can easily overtighten the screws and split the rubber washers, I've seen it dozens of times. I've also fitted Sky lights , roof vents and guttering..... Been in the building industry for over 40 years...

I had assumed that you were going to screen in this outdoor kitchen (because insects in the spring/summer really do suck) and primarily rely upon cross-breeze through the screens to cool and vent it. I guess the cupola has the strength of doing the job and not requiring any power to operate while mitigating heat buildup from the roof and venting smoke as well? Ah well. The outdoor kitchen is coming along nicely. I really like the style you’ve picked for it. It goes really well with the log cabin.
    Beautiful work Shawn ❤

So good to see you wearing a safety harness and hooking up to a safety line. If it had been me I would have had it on for all that high up hammering. I don't have your strength and balance. So good to see your videos again.

I am so glad that you are using safety gear Mr James, puts my mind at rest. You are doing such amazing work on your cabin build and you have come so far with your build from your last cabin. This cabin is beautiful and has been so well thought out and I am sure you and your family will be very happy here. Take care and till the next one. Cali is such a beautiful dog and companion. Thank you for taking us on your adventure and sharing it with us. Have a lovely week end.

Glad you're using safety gear. My husband came off a forty foot roof; he hadn't braced the ladder. Took 2 years and 9 operations to put him back in one piece. He had the sense to ride the ladder down, probably what saved him. 18 titanium plates in his face, several operations to close his palate, and restore function to his right hand, entire mouth of dental repair, all because he was in a hurry and didn't brace the ladder. Please, please be safe.

Precision comes with time and skill, methodically applying what you are capable of in achieving your dream to reality all while living to the fullest. This is Shawn - My Self Reliance.
By the way, I absolutely love what this kitchen is becoming; professionally built. I imagine it could possibly be used as an indoor outdoor kitchen. I especially love the cupola!!
It’s not too late to use the cupola as the chimney to allow all the smoke to rise out from while the kitchen is closed in for the winter, wife would love this!

Wow, the cupula was an unexpected nice touch addition. I don't know how you do it, climb up on a roof like that. THAT is one thing I am deathly afraid of. When I was about 6 (I'm, 76) I saw a man fall from the roof of my folks house, I've been afraid of falling ever since.
    Great job. '-)

I know absolutely nothing about construction. However, I can't stop watching your channel. I find myself intriqued and at awe at the craftsman skills you do "basically" by yourself. Beautifully done.
One question...what is the reason for not covering your dog when it rains, snows, the cold? Animals get cold as well.

I’ve built and sold all the homes I have ever lived in as a married man. This last one will take care of me until I am gone. I’m 75 now and I still enjoy it. You are so meticulous at arranging your cabin. The work you have put into it is amazing. I must say that I used skill saws wherever I could. This last house ruined my rotator cups to the point I can’t lift my arms. My wife said good, I don’t want another home, this one is perfect. 🤣😂😅I agree that it took a few accidents to slow me down. It’s all good. I’m at peace, my work is done. I LOVED BUILDING! 👍

Please be careful! I'm glad to see you roped off. I was a roofer in my younger days, and steep work was not my forte, especially metal. Glad to see you putting the screws on the raised portion of the rib. So many people I see install the screws on the flat and are relying solely on that tiny neoprene washer. More volume of rainwater is going to flow over that fastener/washer on the flat section of the metals profile than the rib. Love the cupola, nice architectural touch. Are you going to install drip edge on that portion? All you need now are some finials and a weather vane.😉 Sorry for babbling, keep up the fine work, Sir. 🫡
