My first deer that I ever shot was in GA in 1979 and he was a young 7 point buck. I shot him using an old Savage .223 bolt action with some reloads that my father had loaded up. He too dropped in his tracks just like this one. As for people commenting on the young buck taken in this video - Yes it is likely a 1.5 year old, but it is okay to harvest a young buck every now and then. He stated that he had already let several young bucks walk during the season and that he was looking for meat on this particular hunt. Culling one young buck from the heard is not going to have any effect. It is when people shoot every young buck that they can is when problems start to arise. To me this was a good ethical hunt and harvest.

@@alabamaoutdoors4468 I understand that. Back in the mid to late 90's I was part of a group where the Biologist of the company we leased 6K acres from wanted to implement a heavy doe reduction. We were part of a contiguous 15K acres that was part of this program. Our club was harvesting on average some 20 does per 1 mature buck. So in a good year we could harvest 100 does and maybe 5 mature bucks. This process went on for several years. I remember one year I harvested 7 does by myself. Well after several years of doing this not only on our 6K acres, but on all the properties it got to where you didn't see any deer at all. I'm not saying they were eradicated, but they certainly went nocturnal. I ended up leasing some more property about 10 miles away and it was 350 acres for just me and one other guy. We see deer daily and I've been able to take several really nice bucks off of that property. I have a choice of does too if I want them, but I'm a trophy hunter so I just wait for the big one to come in looking for the does. I can go on for days talking deer management, but the best practice to me is to not over do one side or the other. Don't over harvest does, don't over harvest bucks, don't over harvest young bucks.

I got a glimpse of him once while hunting, but never an opportunity. I think one of the things I enjoy a lot is plowing and planting food plots for the deer. It's nice being able to go out there and watch the deer using the food plots. Of course if someone asks me for a deer I'll usually shoot a doe for them. I too just enjoy being out there.

      I've killed whitetail deer with
arrows that people say are too
slow, with black powder muzzleloaders and patched round
balls that people say are inadequate,
      and a bunch with a 1950 30/30
lever action that people say is
      grossly underpowered. I wouldn't
feel ill equipped with a 223 rifle
(Or a Contender pistol) to kill
a whitetail deer . I know how to
      humanely kill animals and properly
cut them up and cook them.

Back in the 80’s I started using a 22-250 for whitetails up close. They were all low lung shots and close and not moving. The lungs and hearts were literally shredded into 2” strips and the chest cavities just a mass bowl of blood. They were dead instantly even though a few ran like a few yards from pure shock. Of course all the cannon carriers using 308’s with 180 gr bullets said I was undergunned. I told them they were underskilled and that horsepower into dirt has zero effect on game. If you’re an ethical hunter who doesn’t spray and pray at everything you see .22’s with today’s bullets are perfectly fine. Fusions and the copper bullets are great. They don’t come apart.

I use an DSI-15 in .223 Wylde. I use 75 grain Speer Gold Dots. I usually shoot deer in the head or neck. I use an Vortex 1-6 Strikeeagle scope. I don’t like to track deer. If I have a long shot over 100 yards in an open field with snow I will take the high shoulder shot which will generate enough shock to drop a deer in it’s tracks. Behind the shoulder, I have seen deer run 100 yards. The 75 grain bullet will get through the opposite side leaving a blood trail. The .223 Remington with the right bullet and shot placement will always harvest a deer.

Not to mention how many conflicts they've been usd in around the globe. If you can kill a grown human you can take a whitetail . Just have to be mindful with shot placement as with literally anything you use to hunt. You neck shot a buck with a 556 he drops immediately. You neck shot with an arrow at 25yrds, most cases he isntngoing Down right away. I grew up in mn hunting in a shotgun zone, and it wasn't until I got into my laten30s I realized how wild that is. That's a massive amount of energy being dumped into a deer at under 40yrds, and even with that, I've seem deer late season on 3legs. Where do hunter just blew the leg off essentially and somenhow that deer loves a few days on it. We have a local meat processing guy who over the years has collected shoulders and diff bones broadheads hit and it just heals a calcium deposit all the way around the broad head and remaining chunk of arrow. I have pictures of insane bones with broadheads fully encapsulated within. So no matter what we use, it's all about a clean shot, and good placement regardless if your using a 3" slug or a .223. Be patient and if the shot is sketchy, just no need to take it imo.

Not picking on you just wondering when they changed the regulations.
Since when is the 223 illegal for deer hunting in Wisconsin?
It was still legal in the 2016 regulations which state, "It is illegal to:
      • hunt deer with any center-fire rifle less than .22 caliber, any rimfire rifle, or air gun.".
2023 regulations are more vague and state, "Reasonable Equipment : It is illegal to hunt with any weapon or ammunition that is of inherent design or used in such a manner as to not be reasonably capable of reducing a target wild animal to possession.".
Golly its getting to be that you need an attorney before you go afield or fishing.
