Reddy is the title given to the Village Head of olden days. We all know about Munasabu and Karanam of the villages of olden days. In Rayalaseema Districts, Karanams come from a separate caste called Karanam itself. But, in coastal Andhra, Karanams are from Brahmin Community.
Now, coming to Munasabus, they are from local dominant castes who are naturally agriculturalists.
All castes contributed to the posts of Munasabus.
Any person of any caste who acts as a Munasabu gets the title of Reddy in some parts of Rayalaseema.
In that process, his father also got the title of Reddy though he belongs to Kamma Caste. They are not Reddys who are called Kapu in Rayalaseema.
We also know about Raghuveera Reddy. In fact, he is not a Reddy. He belongs to Golla Caste which is called as Yadava due to sanskritisation of the Caste name like Chakali as Rajaka, Mangali as Nayee Brahmin, Eendra as Gowda etc.
So, in that process, the family members of Neeraja Garu came to be associated with the title of Reddy. They are Kamma Naidus only. They are not Reddys.
In Rayalaseema, several higher castes use the title of Naidu as suffix to their names. Kammas mainly use this title. In certain cases, velamas and Balijas also use the same title, if they become slightly better off. It means, if they become rich or dominant in their place. In Telugu, it is called 'Mudaradam'.
So, we call them as Kamma Naidu, Velama Naidu, Balija Naidu for the purpose of distinguishing their caste.
In Unttarandhra, many dominant BC Castes like Polinati Velama use the title of Naidu. It is because, there are no big or higher castes in that region. So, it is free for use by lower castes. In middle Andhra, as Kammas use the title of Chowdhury and BCs are not strong enough, the title of Naidu is being used by Kapus to a great extent. It is a more common title than Reddy. So, Naidu is being used by many castes in India.
