I feel like they haven’t truly defined what the weapon is supposed to be yet. The classics like GS, Lance, Hammer etc. stay mostly the same. Tried and true. The newer weapons are still building up to their true form

Big analysis from a swaxe main:
0:05 - You can see a glow on the axe head here if you pause at the right time, most likely the "heat" buff from the extended wild swings finisher they're doing (presumably they did a few takes and this is from a previous take). Hopefully it's the one from Rise that gives you faster sword meter and not the one from World/Iceborne, or just something totally new. It's also possible that it's the Rise mechanic that gave you phial effects in axe mode if you had full sword meter, although that one was more pronounced.
0:14 - Overhead swing opener is faster like in Rise. Animations also look a little more crisp as the axe really digs into the ground and stops dead.
0:16 - A new version of rising slash that hits twice, looks sick. Probably chains back into overhead slash. Possibly only available as a combo finisher from the basic hit chain, you might still be able to get the old rising slash, or a single-hit version of this one, using the old two-button input.
0:20 - Sword overhead slash opener seems to also be faster like Rise. It's not clear how much forward movement it has though.
0:21 - The hunter does a small sidestep here that's new, could indicate that there are multiple versions of the sword combo that allow you to step as you swing. A lot of weapons seem to be incorporating this kind of mechanic.
0:33 - This looks like a proper Element Discharge but with an instant detonation. It's possible this will lead to ZSD if you have full meter.
0:35 - A new counter, activated from neutral in sword mode. This is total speculation, but maybe this is a new property of morphs? It might also build back some sword gauge since a lot of counters seem to interact with weapon resources.
0:37 - The camera and the character running makes it seem like this is the follow-up for that greatsword uppercut mechanic where you hit the monster as it hits you and send it flying, so not really part of the regular kit.
0:40 - What the HECK is this? We have like 3 seconds of footage to go off of but here's my speculation:
First off, the sword is glowing bright red, which means this is probably at max sword gauge. We also see phial discharges, which lines up with this. The footage seems to show an initial activation (red particle effect and a sound cue) and two subsequent hits, and from the motion of the hunter at the end, it looks like they're going for another (maybe got cut because it whiffed). It seems like the third hit includes a morph as the glow disappears.
Based on the "activation" at the start, the general motion of the attack, the glow and phial discharges, and the possible morph at the end, I THINK this is a powered-up Heavenward Flurry (the attack at 0:25) that becomes available at max sword meter, chained into a regular morph slash. This means we might see a new moveset for sword mode when it's powered up, similar to what Longsword gets. If that's the case, it probably at the very least changes the circle-button attacks, and it might also change the triangle-button attacks, and maybe even the morph attacks. Again, all speculation, but this attack being Heavenward Flurry seems like the most likely possibility.
Now for the stuff we don't see:
- Zero sum or compressed finishing discharge
- ANY of the existing morph attacks (most importantly, the double-hit ones from Rise)
- Meter / gauge mechanics
- Mashing
- Attacks at full sword meter (possibly)
- Fade slash or forward slash
- Dodge canceling Wild Swings
- The only dodge is an axe back-roll at 0:19 (swaxe has some of the best dodges in the game, so they are hopefully unchanged)
- Drawing into sword mode
Overall, not much to go off of, but I'm still excited to see what it looks like when we finally get our hands on it. It seems like it's mostly just gotten the universal mechanics, some style upgrades, and no big new gimmicks aside from a counter. Seems great so far.
would love if we got a new moveset in sword mode. more complexity would be super nice

Rising slash being a double hit is disappointing imo. I liked how goofy it looked while also appreciating effective it was. This new version looks like it takes longer and has less reach, hopefully the old version is still available as a starter move from a stand still and this double hit version is the combo version only.
Im hoping that the mounting zero sum discharge is in the game like how it is in world. I wouldnt mind if compressed zero sum discharge was also in the game in some fashion. The heat mechanic from rise would be great if it was included. Invincible gambit being included is ok I guess, I never liked that move in rise tbh. I doubt soaring wyvern blade will be included but thats ok, the new focus move attacks look amazing.
I'm a little worried that they didn't show morph attacks from neutral, I'm really hoping you can do that.
The fact that they didn't mention Amping/Sword Gauge/Power Axe at all seems a little strange considering weapons like Charge Blade and Longsword have their Gauges showcased. Makes me think there might have been a big rework.
This showcase is such a tease! It's giving us more questions than answers.

The weapon looks like some pincer- beetle inspired. But the armour is some beautiful, almost religious/royal-like robes. Love all the designs

Lots of elements of Storm Style swax from Frontier in this, with the guard point parry and the extended beam resembling the light sword. Be interesting to see how similar they are in reality.

That wasn’t a guard point, I think it was part of the counter skill it had in rise
@@zachflora9731 Does not look like it. Rise, Sunbreak in particular added a Counter which was CRAZY powerful, but it had a way longer animation to set up, and it was extremely flashy and explosive.

@@kaz7886 Not the exact same but Ii is still most likely a counter inspired by the one in rise, just a bit toned down. It's not a gurad point as the SA can't even guard nor made that animation sense as a guarding.

@@kaz7886 Sure but that didn't look like guarding to me and a counter makes much more sense for a hyper aggressive weapon like the Switch Axe. I am not completely excluding the possibility of a guard point though, i just don't think it's likely.

I’m a massive Fan of SA. In the previous games, I used LS mainly, but recently did a new playthrough of World with SA and fell in love.
@@holdenschlabach115 same here! I started Rise/Sunbreak as a SA main for the first time. I loved it so much. I also did a second playthrough of Worlds/Iceborne using SA as well coming of a LS in my first run

I think it's some kind of bird wyvern actually. The beak looks a bit like a cross between a yian garuga and a hypnos.
The light colored parts looks like skin from a Khezu while the darker shaded parts looks like wing membrane.

This may very well be the first MH I try all the weapons, lol. Used SWAX for the first time in Rise, absolutely fell in love!
It's the most enjoyable weapon in the game tbh. So much you can do with it. Becomes a sword, becomes an axe, discharge, mount and discharge.
Started my journey as a hunter back in the third gen. SA was my original main. Love it.

@@gray8301Same. I never bothered using the counter. It felt too clunky and was unbalanced by awarding you a lot for little. This counter does look better. I’m curious to see all the details on it and the other new stuff.

really wish they'd bring back the dive in Soaring Wyvern Blade in rise, I love zero sum discharge, but getting away from the monster was bad, and finishing early in world to fall near was anti climax. The dive in Soaring Wyvern Blade really helped maintain the flow of the battle. Maybe making it harder makes you spam 0sd less, but diving after flying away sure was cool.

The last two iterations of SA made this weapon a solid foundation. I am glad to see they didn't change what most consider great and added Focus Mode!

don't worry, the game is still 6 months away, they'll show us most locals and monsters in the same way when we get closer to release. they care about money and more people will favor the spoilers than the few who want a fresh experience

Teasing new monsters through the weapon and armor showcase is such a genius move
I see we have a Counter again, thank you CapGOD; it looks pretty similar to the Sunbreak one but instead of intercepting an enemy attack it seems more like a reactive counter to getting hit in some kind of stance. Also, loving the flippy combo at the end there. I don't recognise this armor, so another new monster tease. Judging by what looks like mandibles on the Swaxe, it's probably a Neopteron or Temnoceran. Also, very strange they didn't show off or mention the Sword or Amped gauges, which are kind of important to the weapon's functionality.

@@Lime_Cordis I personally think it's amazing, started using it when I was first introduced to monhun with MH4U and never looked back. The only problem the weapon had was a lack of defensive options which Rise fixed. Both the axe and sword mode are viable so you'll never feel like you're being forced into using only 1 mode because the other is underwhelming....besides...when you full charge up the weapon you can latch on to a monster part and nuke the hell out of it.
Need I say more?
FUCK yes. Those options may make me actually start playing again in fully honestly. I have skill. I took on all the monsters in world but God was it so annoying and aggravating at the same time that I had to stop. So these defensive options and counters may actually be what's needed to start playing again!
@@Lime_CordisIf you like playing aggressively than you’ll love it. One thing of note is that it apparently has a kinda high skill ceiling, so I recommend getting a lot of practice with it

Watch Capcom casually drop a new weapon showcase. I don't think I could handle the hype, though. 2024 has slowed to a crawl since they announced wilds 2025 release

I‘m so hyped what my new favorite weapon may be. It was different in every MH game, cause there are always some little changes in movement. I was totally into Swaxe in MH Tri. Also Lance bc of underwater fights. Started with SnS back then, After Freedom over Hammer, loved Glaive since 4, became DualS main in World and totally gone crazy for LongS in Rise.
Maybe when carrying 2 Weapons with you i go for bowgun also…. But definitey hyped af!!!!

I used only used it in rise so I had no idea there were no switch attacks in the previous games. It's good they're back because they were a big part of keeping the battle flow going.
@@mbern4530morph attacks are not new but before rise you could only use them as a follow up after a normal attack and you couldn't use morph attacks back to back

Looks like it. It was the one weapon I was hoping that kept it, lacking any real defensive options beforehand obviously.
Looks like there is a base mechanic for guard/counter. since all the weapon videos had shown this effect for guards or counters.
I'm stoked, I look forward to more announcements.

@@bulletxwound3559 Nope wrong, there is an audible impact noise when the paw of the monster makes contact with the switchaxe. If the hunter didn't block it, we would've heard a different audio cue.
@@KalaamNozalys actually look at the clip before making assumptions. The hunter puts the weapon BEHIND them when the monster hits ie s. not a block

Good to see they added defensive moves, cause the only defense option in World is dodging. Also happy to see moves from Rise, since Rise did a great job with combining axe and sword mode. Unlike World which focuses on sword mode more. The animation looks smooth, 100% gonna play this as a SA main.
The movesets are cool and all but what I love about these overviews is the ARMOUR. Such intricate designs and it is always nice to see the difference between male and female sets.
