and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
    receive You sacramentally,

    Amen.

I’m 65 years old. I’ve never been able to understand my discouragement and overwhelming sadness that seems to come out of nowhere, which I was actually experiencing when I began watching this mass. I would never have attributed this state of being to pride. Even though I feel that I have a strong relationship with the Lord, I have a perfectionist mindset (which in reality is prideful). Your homily has been immensely enlightening, and freeing, for me. Thank you.

I am seventy one years of age and it was news to me too that discouragement comes from the sin of pride. This knowledge is so clarifying.
Love the antidote to discouragement humility and hope, truth and right action.
      Keep the light shining.

I didn't have any idea that anxiery could be the sin of pride. Also, it really makes one think about life and that maybe we are all too prideful since there is so much anxiety in the world. I'm 77 years Ola and still have a problem with anxiety about all I have to accomplish....wonderful homily

Fr Mike I am so grateful that you say mass on line for us. I am presently attempting to walk the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome but have experienced lots of pain in my feet which cause me grief. In addition there are no churches open where I am walking. The town I am in today doesn’t celebrate mass each Sunday the church is open only once a month. I feel lonely and depressed. Thank you for bringing a little light to my day. His bless you.

I'm so sorry to hear Fr. Mike was feeling discouraged last weekend, from the outside looking in, I always think Easter must be such an intense time for priests. Fr. Mike mentioned a few videos ago he was spending just one day with his family over Easter. I know it must be a busy time at the university but I really hope he can get some rest. He lives such a selfless life. I'm praying for you father. I always love your homilies. God bless you always 🙏🕊✝❤

Father Mike, both the Divine Mercy Sunday and last Sunday homilies were outstanding. I listened to them twice. Be assured you are preaching the good news so well that the devil has come to make you doubt yourself. Fear and discouragement are the devil’s workshop! Take time to “just be with Lord” and He will enlighten you. God bless and peace to you!

I like these homilies because Fr. Mike uses stories from film and television, explaining the spiritual and psychological meaning that he gleens from them. The homilies relate directly to the readings as well. The teaching speaks to me because my bachelor's degree is communication/theater. My master is in Organizational Psychology, with a focus on Educational Leadership. It reminds me of the way that Fr. Dietrich, my friend and pastor for almost 15 years taught us at St. Mary's Church in Lincoln, NE. I'm still really grateful for his willingness to be a Father figure for me when I was really sick after the drunk driver hit me. If it wasn't for his guidance of me and my kids, I would not have gotten better, or met other relatives on my birth Father's side of my family who had been through similar circumstances. I really appreciate this ministry. BTW: being a bus driver and educator: I was born for that; each day, I have to do the next right thing. ❤ Thank you, Father Mike and Front Pew Crew. 🙏 God bless you.

This resonated so much with me. It does come down to pride. I was an overachieving honor student all throughout elementary to high school but then it took me 9 years(!) to finish a 5 year university program. I'm now 30 and still unemployed. I don't like leaving the house because I don't want to talk to people who knew me when I was younger. I don't want them to know that I still haven't accomplished anything in my life while my peers are living their dreams.
I need to spend more time with God and begin again.

In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Jesus Christ 1Thes. 5.18
Talk to Jesus. He is with you. God knows our future because He is omnipotent. He is love and wants what is best for us. Ask Him what He wants you to learn from the place you are at. Wait for His answer. I know it will be good because we know who is our Shepherd who only wants what is good for us.

Thank you Fr. Mike for another inspiring lesson. The scourge of discouragement is very debilitating and not surprised to learn it comes from the sin of pride. Move in humility (truth) and hope (right action). With Jesus before us I say, 'now I begin'.
Good to be reminded that Jesus is not surprised by our sin and so neither should we be surprised, defeated by our sins.

These next upcoming months as the foster system evolvies and changes, while on probation please don't let our new adoption agency bring us to discouragement. All of the foster children you have brought into our home has been blessings, we just wonder if it is your desire God for us to continue to try to have children. After teaching for almost 20 years each child you bring into my life are blessings but we are confused if you want us to have a child in our home foreseer.... Thanks for a great message. In 8/2023 I went on a beautiful individual silent retreat and I prayed with Bruno Lateri’s quote for many days (thanks Hallow and Fr Tim Gallagher’s Ignatian daily contemplation). I walked over 25 miles that weekend around the grounds of the retreat center praying and listening to a kids song- “try everything” by Shakira from the zootopia movie. It reminded me we all need to hear this message at every age. Our sins and failures do next define us. God’s grace and mercy is bigger than our challenges. “I won’t give up. No I won’t give in” Each moment is an invitation to begin again. I pray for everyone who feels discouraged right now, because I’m so thankful for our church and community of believers- just this morning a group of people prayed with me and for me after I shared how the weeks burdens felt too heavy. What a beautiful thing it is to encourage one another and be united in prayer.

But my mom says she supports me but discourages me saying “it’s to much math” “do a degree that doesn’t have to much difficult classes” I didn’t pray this week I feel into a sin I always do and I feel so alone. I didn’t go to church today, I feel like I’m not good enough for god yet. But today father Mike was right in talking about pride. I am prideful I haven’t gone to confession. I am trying to do the best I can so I can give myself to god, when I am successful so he will be happy with what I’ve done. I pray for those who have fallen into this. I hope I can get out of this rut. Thank you for this homily

Loved today's message. Discouragement comes from pride and not directly from sin. The best thing to do after failing or sinning is doing the next right thing. Bruno Lanteri - Now I begin - Getting ahead of the season of discouragement. Robert the Bruce's betrayal of William Walace and how we can go out of the dark by accepting humility. Acknowledge the truth, accept it, do something about it- the second step of hope. Proclamation of the truth, the name of Jesus, the name that saves humankind. Peter's denial of Jesus and how he repented and helped spread the Gospel. Thank you so much, Fr. Mike, the Front Pew Crew and Team Ascension.

The most courageous person is the one who chooses humility and hope, in the season of discouragement.
Courage is the ability to have faith, persistent and strength in the moment of fear.
Courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, I will give my best again tomorrow.
Courage is the willingness to act.

My Lord, and My God! Thank you, for our priest. Protect them from the evil one. From our pride, Lord Jesus deliver us. That all of you my brothers and sisters may become holier than I. Blessed Mother and all the Saints pray for us.

Father Mike, thank you for your wise words and observations this morning. I too, find that when I am discouraged about matters in life, there was an expectation - hidden or unhidden that did not come to fruition - according to my will. Then comes the spiritual humble pie and I begin again with gratitude for yet another blessed lesson in discerning "His Will" - not mine. You may have been discouraged Father Mike, but keep in mind that in those moments of discouragement that you were experiencing - your words and intentions were helping others - tremendously. Deuteronomy 31:8 😉 God Bless you, Father Mike!

Thank you Father Mike Schmitz for mentioning first off the reason for these on line masses. They are such a blessing to me as I work in retail and this allows me to keep my obligation when I'm working weekends.

Hang in there Father Mike! I don’t believe that discouragement always come from pride. Another reason can be exhaustion or isolation and many other reasons.

I just want to say thank you. In March of 2021, I believe, the bishop of my diocese, closed the church that I have spent most of my life attending. After this, I began to feel very disconnected, like it didn't matter which of the other Catholic churches I registered as a member, I felt like a visitor. You make me feel more at home.

Father Mike, great homily today. I don't comment much if ever. However, I felt compelled to thank you for your candor about overcoming your personal feelings of discouragement recently. It helped to humanize the message. I loved the Braveheart analogy as well. Thank you for all that you do. Best, Michael

Jesus left us with the Holy Spirit to guide us. He said from the cross, forgive them, father they don’t know what they’re doing. With the Holy Spirit with the Holy Spirit, we can learn to have the courage to get back up after we fall. With the Holy Spirit, we can overcome the pride that fills us. With the Holy Spirit, we can learn to embrace each other as family Whose injuries need healing and love, not separation or division. From the cross Jesus also gave John his mother and his mother to John. Mother Mary wants to help us with our prayers. Remember when they ran out of wine at the wedding feast, she asked Jesus to help us. She continues to do that today! Glory be to the father, son, and Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be Amen Immaculate heart of Mary pray for us now, and at the hour of our death. Peace to everyone ❤
