  • The ability to stabilize an aircraft without a pilot, also known as an autopilot, opened the door to many new civilian and military technologies. In this introductory section of flight control fundamentals, we discuss the early motivation of the flight control system, the first autopilot demonstration in 1914, how this development led to the first cruise missile technologies, how drawbacks of mechanical flight control technology lead to the first fly by wire systems, how digital fly by wire flight control enables the performance of today’s aircraft, and how digital fly by wire will continue to be a framework from which advancements in control algorithms directly translate improved aircraft performance.

I don't guess its correct to say that Sparry built the first cruise missile. He built the first kamikaze drone.

It's interesting that history seems to have come full circle on the kamikaze drone, although it's only been commonly referred to as a drone in the past 20 years.
The early winged-bombs, which fit today's definition of a drone, were predecessors to today's cruise missiles. But, they both have a common function: to deliver a payload to a surface-target over long distances without a human on board, sacrificing itself in the process.

I've always liked Stevens and Lewis' book, Aircraft Control and Simulation." Blakelock's 2nd Edition of Automatic Control of Aircraft and Missiles" is also a personal favorite. But, there are many good references, so I'd recommend if you are seriously interested in the subject, to gradually grow your library to other titles.
