hi there! 🌼 if you're curious about more polymer clay tips, I recently shared a short Q&A that addresses specific questions, like types of glaze! ua-cam.com/video/pWDJB13u-uk/v-deo.html
can i use my regular cooking oven for baking if i still intend on using it to cook meals? ive heard i have to use a seperate oven due to fumes making the ovens no longer suitable for cooking in but ive asked many chanels if thats true, non of them have answered me
I taught polymer clay for years professionally, this is a good source video. The only info I would add is that rubbing alcohol (I use a lower strength) is great to take out fingernail marks, dust, dirt etc prior to baking. Use a q-tip and gently rub. Also I find a smooth ceramic tile a must because you can create on it and then pop it in the oven and it bakes great. I have some videos for different types of projects I'd love for you to pop over and see. (I do paper and clay projects) You have a wonderfully accessibly and clear way of instruction and your video is full of solid information that gives the beginner a good grasp of the medium. Well done!
@@monicab28 it comes off fine once it is baked and cooled. Baking on a tile does make the surface that's on the tile shiny, however if that bothers you parchment paper can be put between the item and the tile, mostly I just cook right on the tile.
where would someone find a class to learn this? asking since you said you taught it. :) craft stores? art colleges? just wondered if there is a place for a person to go learn. Also, as I was reading about the clay in an article, it talked about toxic fumes from baking and maybe the need to clean your oven afterward. Is there another idea for this because I would worry about this for sure. It might be a deal breaker if I have to worry about toxic fumes in my house or cooking in an unsafe oven. I'm sure you have heard this so curious what you might recommend. Thanks so much!!
Smol tip: if youre going to glaze your art piece i recommend using Mod Podge (idk how to say it) like the white glue if you let it sit for a while it will give a glaze texture or use clear nail polish! I think most white glue / pva does work so maksure to expirement!
I used to love playing with clay growing up, & have some arriving tomorrow. Super excited to build 'Mushroom Land' again. It's so cool that you can over bake the art projects to make them more long lasting. Thanks for the 101 for beginners video 🙏🏼
This was amazing and I genuinely loved it. ADHD Crafting hit me hard and I want to make some clay pieces for DnD Mini figures. This covered every single question I had about going into this.
@@abigailmojica3025in a sense, yes. As someone who has adhd myself, people with adhd tend to jump from hobby to hobby really fast and its call 'fixations' where someone with adhd craves dopamine (which is a chemical reaction in your brain that causes the emotion happiness) and finding a lot of hobbys that you enjoy is a good way of getting dopamine.
Thanks for so many helpful tips! I bought myself a little “get started” polymer clay kit six months ago, but I’ve been too nervous to start! I feel much more prepared and I think I’ll take the plunge and start playing with the clay today. I also love your art! Those little ghosts are sooooo cute ❤
Am just starting out and your intro was perfect: informative, to the point, and with very practical tips. Your delivery is very relaxed and still professional. Well done; thanks!
I love how quickly you got right to the point and covered so many different important aspects of getting started concisely. Thank you so much for this video
For me, acetone after baking fixes rough spots better than sanding, and it is pretty easy to get cause most nail polish removers contains it and there are some of them that are 100% acetone based. Great video, thank you for it!
Thank you for the awesome video structure. I have a habit of skipping the first 2 minutes of every youtube video nowadays and you jumped straight into everything.
For dust, hair, lint, etc. I go over all of my charms with a q tip dipped in acetone. I have two cats and it has saved so many of my poly clay charms! Also if you have a pasta machine that is another easy way to mix colors. Stick them together and run it through a few times and it'll mix them quickly and easily.
Way back I was kind of put off by the way my finger prints would be left on the clay but like you said it gives them character and it shows it's handmade. Its definately a mental hurdle for me though
@@yeppennydoodles I need help Yeppenny. Well for my air dry clay crafts..it gets somewhat cracks on it..Do you know a tip which will help me with this? please please reply🥺
This video was so informative and satisfying! Thank you so much for posting this! Please keep it up, I really appreciate and love your videos, they are really helpful!!
You can also use sandwish/freezer bags so that the clay doesn't stick to the suface too, make sure that the edges are secured so they don't move though.
Try parchment or wax paper instead of foil, it's semi transparent so you have some idea of what color the clay is. You can go a bit further by squishing the clay into patties and wrapping the clay like a 'taco', and then put that into a ziploc bag. This helps keep my clay fresher but doesn't let it stick to the clear bag as easily.
...another thing that helps with making it less sticky anywhere is dust it lightly with corn starch ....looking forward to see more of your art adventures
Hi thank you for this video, I haven't used oven baked clay since the early 80s and I am very much looking forward to getting back into it. Your video had lots of good advice. I have subscribed and looking forward to watching your other videos.
Thank you so much for the advice Yeppenny! For Christmas this year I've asked for Michael's gift cards because I want to go HAM on buying polymer clay. I've tried both air-dry and oven-baked Sculpty. This will be more experimenting and having fun with another type of clay.
4:25, I like to use glossy finish nail polish, because I do a lot of nail painting, and it's just more easier for me to use that instead of buying resin or art gloss, it looks the same, and it's easier because it already comes with a brush
Great video! I've never used polymer clay but with these tips I feel more confident knowing where to start! Thank you for a concise and informative video delivered in a lovely engaging style! Well done 🙏🏼👏🏾
Thanks for posting this. Next month I’ll be buying so much stuff to learn how to do clay art. I want to learn it as a hobby and then if I’m good enough maybe make it into a business. I’m so excited to just start for myself. 😂❤😊
Thanks for the great tips! I’m looking to pick up a new hobby and this video was super helpful 🙌🏻 just followed your insta to stay updated on the progress and inspiration ✨
I just started. I don't have a pasta machine yet and I'm not willing to invest until I see if I'm gonna stick with it. (ADHD). However, I got a cheap extruder off of Temu and found that is very helpful for conditioning the clay on the cheap. I just roll a ball into a rope and then extrude it once or twice with the biggest hole plate and it's soft and ready to work with. Very helpful. :)
thank you so much for sharing your advice about clay making! it is something that i want to try out soon! for christmas this year, I'm asking for clay making supplies lol I'm so excited to try it out and have little creations of my own!😊

Omg, THANK YOU! I just started and I thought I was the only one having issues with the dust, since I didn’t see a single video with people talking about it. Very helpful!
Small tip: If your clay is hard put it in warm water to make it soft enough to mold easily. But do not put it in for too long because it will get too soft and stick to your hands and desktop and will leave a mark.
As other people in the comments have said, Rubbing Alcohol does wonders for pre baking imperfections, but if you have baked it already, try acetone (nail polish remover). Just fair warning it will take off some of the clay so only use it to clean up minor things like lint or fingerprints. Otherwise your clay doodad will look different.

do you use the rubbing alcohol after the clay is baked or before?
@@leeann8105 I believe its used before baking while the clay is soft. It is used to smooth the clay. Because you don't want to use water
Do you pull the item off the tile and put it back on the tile to bake? Or will it come off fine once it bakes?
@@monicab28 it comes off fine once it is baked and cooled. Baking on a tile does make the surface that's on the tile shiny, however if that bothers you parchment paper can be put between the item and the tile, mostly I just cook right on the tile.
