I actually have some additional info that came from Protech. They referred to it as glass and resin (not sure if they’re using a different type of G10 or if this was simply a different terminology and they were referring to fiberglass) and said that both are highly toxic and difficult to machine. “The glass in it is much harder than any tooling bits (except diamond, which is crazy expensive), so it destroys bits insanely fast. It even tears apart the interior of the CNC machines.”
Both Micarta and G10 are created using the same basic principles. Micarta is technically a brand name, although it's now used as a generic term for resin impregnated fibres. G10 is a classification, a standard for GRP used in electronic circuit boards. Using the broader definition, there's no reason not to make 'micarta' from fibreglass.
I read somewhere years ago when G10 was first becoming popular that it was a carbon composite. Made under pressure and heat like some aerospace grade composites. Sure sounds alot better than.... its just fiberglass.....and dye..... I think they had a similar explanation for the other one (Micarta) thats basically made from old blue jeans and resin. Most of them arent quite as bad with the marketing BS these days, the good companies anyway. Its just too easy now to look it up elsewhere and confirm or deny. Still, beware the marketing. In my experience the more a company talks up something they've already made a ton of, the more mundane the accurate description of the material generally is. I would think the quality of the composite is going to depend heavily on which factory made it using which processes. I really dont hear much about that in the knife world. Like is there a handful of factories making it for everyone? Or many individual producers? Do any knife companies make their own composites? "Forged Carbon" is becoming a bigger thing now. Most of it you see on cars is fake unless its a pretty highend car. Or a regular car somebody is spending a lot building. If its made the way it was orginally envisioned then it should be nearly indestructible for something like knife scales. But that depends on who's making it and how. Is it truly heat and pressure formed or just some cheap overlay process? Marketing, I really hate marketing. We used to call it lying, now its marketing. Buyer beware
