Not sure why you aren't using an iron remover like IronX? They are commonly used in the car detailing world - worth a try on gelcoat as well. No scrubbing needed.
I agree, I didn’t have iron x! Iron x would be the best option, but I couldn’t wait a few days to order it and get some in. So I had to use what I had on hand! Thanks for bringing that point up!
@@DrakesDetailing most wheel cleaners are mainly iron removers, a lot of detailers use wheel cleaners like cheap Eagle One to spray all over the car to dissolve iron. Drake, I have done my share on 'online learning' on different topics via you tube videos over the years. I have to say these videos you have posted are by far the most helpful ones I have ever seen. My plan this morning was to wash and wax my boat. I googled 'tips for buffing a boat' or something similar and some of your content popped up. I must have watched 3 or 4 hours of your videos today so far. Found a great local marine supply dealer, picked up some of their products (as well as ordering some of the ones you recommend via your links) and the boat is starting to look better than new! Just want to say you are the MAN! Your content gets right to the topic, no BS, and just straight forward how to get it done information. 5 stars all the way! So helpful, just fantastic. Thank you so much for taking your time to put these out there for us to learn from. BTW, $100 an hour charge you guys get is well deserved, this is hard work. Not sure I'll be able to move my arms tomorrow!
The active ingredient in all rust removers is Oxalic acid or Hydrofluoric acid. Oxalic acid is widely available in dry form and is mixed in water. 50 to 1 ratio or less. Wear eye protection as it will burn you. This chemical is also excellent on yellow hull stains [ which are basically iron stains]. It is also used to bleach wood before staining. In the drycleaning and laundry industry it is used for rust removal on clothing and to neutralize rusty water. I use this chemical often. To date I have not had any bad reactions when it is used near a painted surface, [Like a hull boot stripe.] [RINSE WELL.] The marine product "On-Off" works well and has oxalic acid as its active ingredient.
I was doing a 36 yellowfin today and I was using an orange lake county pad with first 400 then ardex 600. It was very mild oxidation but it would not come out. I had been switching between two pads that I had washed but had been old and used on two previous boats. Any suggestions on why it was not cutting? I ordered new pads as I believe the pads were just worn out but figured it would have done at least something. Could I suggest a future video “how to setup your pads” going over proper priming and what it should look like throughout the process with various compounds as well as when to clean/blow out your pads. 18 y/o and your channel solely has helped me get into the business, great videos thanks for the knowledge.
I would switch to a wool pad on a rotary with the 600 or try the 400. I just did that with light oxidation & presta compound and it worked perfectly on the light stuff. My .2.
I've seen this when people use steel wool to polish stainless etc. I've used oxalic acid that I bought in a gallon. Really cheap but check the ratio prior to using it and rinse the crap out of it after. Nice job and thanks for the continued "how to"...
I was so grateful to find this video and the comments as i just picked up my boat from my dry slip to detail and there's rust spots everywhere and I've been freaking out. Didnt want to take a chance at making it worse by attempting to clean it as the staff claims to never have seen this before!
I do Marine repair for a living and I also used to do Auto body and paint and have detailed a lot of cars. The problem being is after you clean the non skid there are fragments of steel in the no skid left behind . If you had a system to suck up the steel shards and remove them completely you would not have the rust show back up after you detail it. My suggestion is to get one of those Bissel portable carpet cleaners with the brush attachment. Put straight white vinegar in the tank . Have a spray bottle with vinegar in it and spray the area and brush it loose the vinegar will remove rust then after you have losened the area, fire up the carpet shampooer and suck up with the brush attachment. This will remove rust particle completely any stains on the gel coat will be removed from the Vinegar and then just clean up with a terry towel . What is good here is the Vinegar is completely biodegradable and wont pollute the water or hurt wildlife like acid will and most of all its dirt cheap . And vinegar destroys rust !Then follow up with your wax or protect-ant. I think if you try this system it will make your job no only easier but quicker and you dont have to worry about rust stains coming back to bite you in the ass days later that the towel didn't get.
So do you usually have water access on the docks? If not how much water would you recommend to bring? 250 gallons or more? And would you recommend filtered water ?
I just used On & Off on a boat detail yesterday. Heavy, heavy water stains on the hull. The cleaner literally made the stains disappear in seconds. But yeah...wear a respirator and chem protective gloves.
Brown scorch pad + handy Andy+ Vim to break the metal chards. You could also use a heavy compound and white scorch pad. After that use a rust remover. You might have to repeat that a few times. Been doing this for 17 years. Normally at ship yards it could be from metal dust, someone doing welding jobs. It can also come from the crane cables
Your knees must be raw after crawling around on the nonskid. When working on mine, not only did my knees get raw, but my big toes also when barefooted. Got to have a kneel / knee pad. Your persistence is admirable.
Hi Drake, thanks for the videos I have learned a lot and have used your techniques to detail my boat, especially your video on how to wax your non-skid. My question is what is your opinion on sea dek? I'm thinking about putting it on my non-skid. Is it worth it, does it last? I live in Ohio so sun and humidity not as bad as Florida, thanks.
I was doing a 36 yellowfin today and found a 25 degree tip on your power washer will blow out all dirt or black spots off in the nonskid. I also were white rubber boots from Walmart super light weight and clean them initially after stepping on the boat and try and limit the times I hop on and off always trying the clean my boots off before walking around. After an initial cleaning of the soles I never have issues but still always hit the topside with a mild degreaser before finishing it off with SiO2 coating. Given me great results but limiting the dirt you could bring on will help you when your finishing it. Hope this helps.
That is happening when they leave the Boats uncovered..... Always cover your Boat after driving! Oceansouth make almost for all Boattypes the right cover. 10min instead of brushing 10hours❤
Once you scurb out the tini metal shards, where do they go, to a different spot because they would need to be washed out of the brush, cloth, deck or perhaps like was mentioned, a magnet should be taken across the floor else the shards just go elsewhere.
You should tell people why they are in the gelcoat. It comes from filings from installing a metal fishing rack or any component where drilling is used. The hot filing actually burn into the gelcoat and wedge into the surface.
So where did the little pieces of rust come from. Scrolled through the video couple of times and never heard where the metal came from that caused the spots?
If that boat or the one next to it is kept on a lift, check the cables and make sure the cables aren’t rusty or any metal flakes off when the lift is used. Slim chance it’s the problem but never know.

Hello mate I have a yatch and my top cockpit decks have a leaf stains mark and I need your experts advise how to get rid of the stains
Try a mild degreaser like diluted super clean
So do you usually have water access on the docks? If not how much water would you recommend to bring? 250 gallons or more? And would you recommend filtered water ?
I always use dock water
Koch Chemie RRR Is good for that brotha! It’s a thicker formula so it doesn’t dry out so quickly like some iron removers

Hey drake, great videos, I was just wondering if I could use jescar powerlock plus for polishing and sealing windows
Yes!
Rust dots are the worst! Thats a lot of surface area to have them on as well. Great work!
Yea, but we got them! Only took maybe an hour if that

Yes for sure! Iron x would probably be best! I just didn’t have any ha
Would rust stain remover by star brite or the generic product in the brown bottle be good for this application?
Yea it would probably work!

Are you able to ship to Canada
What product should I use to remove rust stains from boat hull? Great vids! Thx

Great video Drake! I was just wondering what to do about those dots while detailing my own boat. Perfectly timed!
Awesome! There ya go!

Thanks bro!
I would try to find a scrub brush attachment for my rotary polisher. I'd hate to hand scrub the whole deck!
I hear ya! Unfortunately no one has come out with one that I care for

Vinyl stickers are to polish and buff over lightly, unless is a digital printed sticker... you’ll take the ink off

@@DrakesDetailing hahahahahaha well played. Bird crap and leaves hahahaha
For the light oxidation removal with the Jescar power lock and heavy cutting foam pad, what would be your next foam pad besides the lake country grey?
You wouldn't use jescar power lock for Oxidation removal. You would remove the Oxidation and then use Jescar to protect the surface.

Degreaser and magic eraser

Yes you can, but they don’t always remove the metal speck. Make sure to fully remove the metal so the rust stains don’t come back
How long did it take to remove the embedded iron contaminants from the gelcoat?
About 45 mins to an hour
Drake u have to try power 1. Will take that rust off with just spraying it on and washing it off

Would a neodymium magnet work? (Not joking, serious question) To remove the metal, and then clean the rust stain afterwards.
I suppose it could, but i found a decent system that works for me 😉
I had my boat painted on the sides, now there's overspray inside, what is the best way to remove it
Hey Jamie, I personally have never experienced or had to deal with this :/ sorry bro!
@@DrakesDetailing thanks, I have learned a lot from your video's and bought a good bit of the products

Interesting!
Rust specs from using steel wool?
I honestly don’t know, all I know is that they are not there anymore! 😎
Going to b impossible not to miss some as tiny as the metal is. What happens if it gets sealed in under the ceramic?
We will got them all, we really made sure.
