Great review indeed. Actually, you are doing a great service to the Radio and Shortwave indeed. Based on your's and some other reviews, I bought this Radio and I am quite happy with its performance. Thanks again.
Thanks for the review. Great! People are going to have to get used to the batteries. These are the new thing and aren't going away and will probably become a new standard in itself. The 18650 is used in a lot of products now. Adapt or become obsolete! :)
good review. I have watched.and read some reviews that have been overly critical with this raadio. What you have shown here is that this is a very good radio once someone takes time to learn its features and functions. Thanks for the video.
AGC did not seem to be a problem for me yesterday on SSB. Once I fine tuned in I could clearly hear the whole conversation with no noticeable drop outs. I tend to key in specific frequencies and don't tune around that much so i manage to get around the AGC issue. Such a capable and nicely built radio.
I agree, I really enjoy this radio. It has a lot of fun, nice features and capabilities. It’s my #2 portable only behind the much more expensive Eton E1. For the price, this is my #1. Hopefully a “non-chuffing” version will be released soon however!
Many thanks for the review - very informative & useful. BTW I just got my D-808 today (my old radio is PL-310et). Can't wait to explore its functions especially for SW & air band...
Hello. Well as a madium wave dxer i was really surprised on what it could pull in at night. And the short wave is very good also. Agc on ssb could be a little better.but for the money a good purchase. As always. Thank you. Ron z.
I am here in the Philippines and love radios so considering this. I am not sure how much I would pick up in English here so will have to do more research.
I was going to buy this radio until I saw your video. I don't like the mute function when tuning, who deliberately does that when designing a radio? Also the lack of a scan button to find stations is disappointing but you say this is you number 1?
I know nothing about radios. However, when I was a senior-high student in 1991, my classmate gave me an article. It says there that the best shortwave radio receiver is the so-called 'communications receiver' or something called 'general coverage'. Moreover, the Indonesian programme of Deutsche Welle in 1992 said that Siemens RK 661 is very good in receiving shortwave radio signals. So, does XHDATA work as well as a communications receiver or Siemens RK 661 in receiving signals from shortwave radio stations? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your top ten receivers. i do like this receiver since it has the capability to receive CW. I would prefer the capability to change the frequency without the quieting between frequency steps. Looks like most the of the radios now have this feature. This receiver is priced right for me, and right now it is a toss up between the XHDATA D-808, the Grundig Executive and dropping about $50 more for the C Crane Skywave SSB...
Very similar to the Digitech AR1780 that runs on 4 AA batteries. I like the audio more so on the Digitech and the buttons are easier to press. Price on Digitech is much lower, $90 vs the 808 that has climbed up so much in price.
Although it is out of production,I wonder if you have ever reviewed the Satellit 800?.U have had a fairly wide range of sw radios over the years & consider it the best one.Sony 2010 comes in a close second mostly on it's synchronous. The warm tube like audio on the 800 makes it the winner for me.
The new version has the orange screen and has a few improvements. Not sire what they are but I'm sure the info is available. I after the latest version and I'm happy with it. Although I have a few other receivers, I like the fact that this one has the airband included. Not sure I like that it has its am.antenna ferite rod inside, I'd prefer to use my MLA-30+ antenna but it does have good am reception. The whip antenna works for airband even where I am in a rural area about 120 miles from the nearest big city airport. Between my yaesu FRG-7000 and this radio and my uniden scanners, I have all airband frequencies covered for listening. Its definitely a well built radio and feels like a quality radio also. I have a tescun radio and a at125 max decoder, and I would say the D808 is the better radio to use especially when mobile.
I chose this over the one from Retekess. I now use this to listen to NHK World Radio Japan's English broadcasts at 10:00pm Philippine Standard Time. Got the Sihuadon branded one, though.
Another findings: the speaker's diameter is 76.8mm and 21mm thickness if someone will search for better speaker. Also the stock battery is protected, but sucks. With minor work to the positive post in the battery socket i managed to make good contact with flat top Sony Murata VTC6 - the battery indicator not fluctuatie when i raise volume anymore and i feel the radio even more sensitive, selective and with better sound.
Hej Gill thanks for the good review of XHDATA D-808 I have looked and thought about buying this radio for a long time. Bought one based on this review, thanks Gilles. Great radio but the muting while tuning drives me nuts, this is NOT a radio to 'browse' the bands with. I only use direct freq entry via keypad or I use the scan feature and the radio then becomes a bit more user-friendly. I also have a Tecsun PL-880 (doesnt mute when tuning) which is my 'browsing' radio and its awesome altho more expensive than this one. Btw, my XHData D808 was built in 2021 and the battery indicator problem is now solved.
You can get this for £69 is it better than the Tecsun pl660? It doesn't have the attenuator but is it still ok? Basically the Tecsun is an extra £50 is it worth spending the extra cash for the Tecsun or is this just as good?

It's certainly a very capable receiver, but I don't like the way it operates. The memory system is awful and because of how it's implemented, the user is forced to hit the FREQ button every time they want to direct enter a frequency (and sometimes a second time afterwards). I can't tell you how many times I started to enter a frequency, only to get a "Loaded" message because it DEFAULTS to entering a memory slot instead of a frequency. It may be just me, but I found SSB difficult to tune. And how Gilles would name a radio that doesn't use AA batteries as his top, is beyond me (ROFL). Oh, and the manual sucks.
@@electechyt Why dont you buy s quality replacement battery? may that one is a bad one, productions vary in quality and some guys get then the bad apple.
One big problem with this radio is that the clock eats battery charge even when it's turned off. I bet that's one reason they went with Li-Ion . Imagine having to continually replace batteries in a radio you maybe aren't even using. I could do without the clock AND without the stupid thermometer.
Bought it some days ago and found it disappointing: very bad build, the tuning knob was wobbly and skew, scratches on back and antenna, on the front burned into the case a fingerprint and a thicker line (left from the keypad). The Radio was in mint package, so this only shows, there is no quality control.

That battery lasts a looooooong time.
Wish it did. Mine lasted just over an hour from a full charge. Its just a cheap 18650. They cost peanuts even for higher capacity.

Why dont you buy s quality replacement battery? may that one is a bad one, productions vary in quality and some guys get then the bad apple.
Привет! Как это радио, стоит его купить за 70$? Или лучше купить Tescun PL330 за 70$?
One big problem with this radio is that the clock eats battery charge even when it's turned off. I bet that's one reason they went with Li-Ion . Imagine having to continually replace batteries in a radio you maybe aren't even using. I could do without the clock AND without the stupid thermometer.
Mine works for months without use and battery still has good charge
Ur totally right about the batteries rant. Agree 100%
I payed $88 for mine.
18650 is SO much better than AA batteries...
Bought it some days ago and found it disappointing: very bad build, the tuning knob was wobbly and skew, scratches on back and antenna, on the front burned into the case a fingerprint and a thicker line (left from the keypad). The Radio was in mint package, so this only shows, there is no quality control.
No one complains of problems on this radio, I have two and they are great
@@OfficialSWLchannelwell, I complain.
100 poucent agree!!
Muting the tuning. What a stupid idea. Ok for people who don't tune around... what the heck is a radio like this for if it isn't for tuning around?
I live in the Philippines. How can I order for this kind of radio? Pls tell me asap.
