  • LA city councilman Tom Bradley ran unsuccessfully for Los Angeles mayor against incumbent Sam Yorty in 1969. In a rematch in 1973, however, Bradley won. Bradley then became the first black mayor of the city and served 5 terms, leaving office in 1993. Racial issues were major factors in both the 1969 and 1973 campaign, as these clips show.
