Ah, okay, the lyrics make so much more sense divided up between two characters: one a seducing vampire, the other a mortal woman incredibly weary of all the burdens of being a mortal woman.
Very interesting observation. I have listened to the German and this version and both seem to convey this. I haven’t seen the show and movie but I heard that the characterization of Sarah is made stronger so that she wants to control her own life
Trying to clear up all the angry confusion about this song - Jim Steinman wrote Total Eclipse of the Heart for Meat Loaf's album but things happened & he wound up giving it to Bonnie Tyler. Steinman wrote the song with a vampire story in mind so when he had 1 month to write songs for the German musical Tanz Der Vampire he rewrote it and some of his other songs. The musical was such a success that they decided to bring it to the USA but unfortunately the cast chosen was the problem. The difficult tenor, Michael Crawford, the choreographer, & the director. The whole thing was a train wreck, the director left probably exhausted and exasperated but also health issues in his family. Steinman was so angry with the rewrites and dealing with an uncooperative Crawford he stopped showing up and was eventually fired. This is his song and he can do whatever he wants with it. Here, it's sung by Elaine Caswell (Steinman's Pandora's Box) and Steve Barton who originated the role of Count Krolock in the Vienna production. If Dance of the Vampires had hired them or 2 people of equal quality instead of Crawford, the US version might have had a chance - if they had just kept it original.
***** I agree. I don't think Polanski would have let it become a tragedy. I'm guessing they thought that the US couldn't handle the story matter & hired people that couldn't handle the job - so it was a bust.

Wow I did not know all this was going on. I remember liking 2 songs by meatloaf from the radio. Then when I was a teenager I loved this one movie that had some songs one being " Nowhere Fast" It was not real popular. Today I came across Meat loafs song " I'll Do Anything For Love" I had forgotten about it. I realized it sounded like the songs from that movie. Then low and behold the song from the movie was one of his songs. Blew my mind. Several of his songs sound like that, now I know why. Total Eclipe was my favorite song when it came out in high school and now I know why. I still love it! I wish they would get this Vampire in theater. I love Phantom of the Opera, dont know why I have never heard of this. I'm going to look for more of this Jim S. Music!!

Tanz Der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires) first came on stage in Germany in 1997. Steve Barton died in 2001 sadly. Tanz Der Vampire is like Phantom of the Opera over here. It was brought over here in the early 2000's with Michael Crawford playing Graf Von Krolock. It was made more into a comedy and was a total flop on Broadway.
I remember hearing that Crawford felt it was too much like PotO and he did not want to be another Phantom-like character, so they did rewrites specifically for that reason. No excuse in my opinion. No one actor should be able to dictate changes like that.
Yes, Vienna. :-). On the 4th of October of 1997 (premiere date) - to be exactly... and the duration ends in January 1999, after that this musical went to Hamburg, Germany ;-). It was also as beautiful there as it was in Vienna :-).

about the musical: the musical is based on the movie "The Fearless Vampire Killers" by roman polanski (btw native german speaker). He did not work out "total eclipse" for bonny tylor in the 1980s. But the german musical he did and so the lyrics are not tarnslated by word but by sence. The original musical was german!!!! (presented 1997 in vienna) and NOT english (2002) !!!! the english version has so many changes that it can also be seen as own show. independent from the orininal.
Of course that I'm serious, I've never joke with what I love. But, you're right I must explain myself. when I said that I love to hear something new about him means that I've didn't hear that record before. And certanly I know he's dead since 2001, but I rather like not to think about it. I've like to remember him as he was...in his magnificent performances!
His voice sounded better in German... it is too low and too quiet (in the beginning)Sarah would have found it difficult to fall in love with this voice.... and the woman sounds like 40, Sarah is hardly 18. But the the song is beautiful Though i preffer the "Sich verliern heißt sich befrein du wirst dich in mir erkennen" Tis is the essence of Krolock, he symbolizes freedom and loss of control over your life. But this is a matter of translation.
@thesoundofmusicality No no nooo! He is American, read the Wikipedia! D: of course he sounds better in German! But he's American, so odd, no? O.O He learned German himself! But this one is very deep and scary. Plus it's understandable, although I have already memorized the lines to the song where I practically know those German words. However, I totally heart Steve Barton insanely, so it doesn't matter how he sounds o.O
In america they totally misjudged the material and tried to make it in to some sort of a comedy, in BOMBED on brodway, and Jim Steimann wasn't happy with the lyrics either.
Are you kidding??? The US RUINED it. Hired people that had never done a big production, hired what turned out to be a demanding, difficult lead, and tried to make it a comedy. It was a 12 million dollar flop. Steinman couldn't believe the cluster fuck, he was the last one to walk.
Thought I would hate this b/c Bonnie Tyler's version is so iconic, but I like it a lot! This guy also sounds like I imagine a vampire singing would sound.....whatever that means. :)
@Anjelica Snorcket Yes, the German version is great. I've bought the CD soundtrack since watching this video. However, I still like this one. They sing wonderfully and even if the lyrics are superior in German, I don't understand them so it doesn't matter much. :) I do watch the video of Veronica Appeddu and Mark Seibert singing it quite a bit though. I'm obsessed with it! lol.
Of course I love Steve's voice more than anything, ever since I saw "Tanz der Vampire" for the first time, when I was 8 years old in 1999. But the womans voice... It's good without a doubt... But it's definitely not suited for this role.
Ah, okay, the lyrics make so much more sense divided up between two characters: one a seducing vampire, the other a mortal woman incredibly weary of all the burdens of being a mortal woman.
Very interesting observation. I have listened to the German and this version and both seem to convey this. I haven’t seen the show and movie but I heard that the characterization of Sarah is made stronger so that she wants to control her own life
So true...it never fully made sense to me in the pop version.
Agreed. The vampire story line makes the song make so much more sense than before I had any context.
Rest in peace, Jim Steinman, and may this musical be brought back to Broadway and the world successfully.

Krolock appears atop the staircase. As he descends the candles light.
Krolock:
Turn around, this is the night
Now i need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong
Together we can take it to the end of the line
My love is like a shadow on you all of the time
I don't know what to do
And i'm always in the dark
Sarah:
I feel it like a powder keg awaiting the spark
Both:
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Sarah:
Once upon a time i dreamed of falling in love
Now i'm scared of falling apart
Krolock:
There's nothing you can do
A total eclipse of the heart
(turn around…)
Sarah:
Every now and then i think i'd better run away from you
Before it's too late
(turn around…)
Both:
But every now and then i know i/you must go where i/you lead me/you
You'll/i'll go with you/me through the gates of hell
Sarah:
Every now and then i know there's no one in the universe
As magical and wond'rous as you
Both:
Every now and then i know there's nothing any better
And there's nothing that i just wouldn't do
(turn around, bright eyes…)
Sarah:
Every now and then i hear a voice
(turn around, bright eyes…)
Both:
Now you know i never had a choice
And i need you now tonight
And i need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong
Together we can take it to the end of the line
My love is like a shadow on you all of the time
Krolock:
I don't know what to do
And i'm always in the dark
Sarah:
I feel it like a powder keg awaiting the spark
Both:
I really you need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Sarah:
Once i dreamed of falling in love
Now i'm scared of falling apart
Krolock:
There's nothing you can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time, life was simple and bright
Sarah:
Now there's only layers of dark
Both:
There's nothing you can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Krolock:
There's nothing you can do
Sarah:
A total eclipse of the heart
Krolock:
No! No! Tonight, at the ball!
Sarah:
There's nothing i can do
A total eclipse of the heart
There are so many mistakes. Can you edit it lol
oh...my.........gosh
Your description is amazing
You people are crazy. You can say that other versions were better, but this is still a quality version of TEOTH.
about the musical: the musical is based on the movie "The Fearless Vampire Killers" by roman polanski (btw native german speaker).
Who's the female lead in this recording?
Elaine Caswell I think
His voice sounded better in German... it is too low and too quiet (in the beginning)Sarah would have found it difficult to fall in love with this voice.... and the woman sounds like 40, Sarah is hardly 18.
But the the song is beautiful Though i preffer the "Sich verliern heißt sich befrein
du wirst dich in mir erkennen" Tis is the essence of Krolock, he symbolizes freedom and loss of control over your life. But this is a matter of translation.
I'd have loved for Sir Christopher Lee to have recorded a version of this (as a duet with a female singer). Once a vampire...
If they had made a movie of Tanz der Vampire the musical, Christopher Lee definitely could have played the role, and in German too, he was fluent!
I love this song allot
Steve war wirklich unglaublich!!!!
Zwar gefällt mir die deutsche version weit aus besser, aber die englische ist auch nicht schlecht ;)
Actually- This is Michael Crawford if i am not mistaken as this is the Original Broadway Cast recording.
Cool! Abgefahrener Song/ Musical!
I`m like Vampires! Ever!
ohhh steve! *tears*
@maniboi1027 As one of Michael Crawford biggest fans, no, that's not him. That's Steve Barton. It's impossible not to hear.
Yeah Steve i love you :D
@EratosDaughter the girl, Sarah is sung by Elaine Caswell
@angewomonxP This is still Steve Barton!!!! :-P
RIP Jim Steinman
I really like this song. Where can I download the song?
I hope this musical gets a revival with the German and Vienna productions in with a better cast
I really like this song. Where can I download the song (this version)?
@thesoundofmusicality No no nooo! He is American, read the Wikipedia! D: of course he sounds better in German! But he's American, so odd, no? O.O He learned German himself! But this one is very deep and scary. Plus it's understandable, although I have already memorized the lines to the song where I practically know those German words. However, I totally heart Steve Barton insanely, so it doesn't matter how he sounds o.O
In Russia it's called "Кромешная тьма", the're some Videos on youtube :)
Yes, fabulous .. and btw, the German & English production do _not_ that much differ.
Totale Finsternis
I believe it is Elaine Caswell singing as Sarah.
I prefer the German version... and this relates to all songs of this musical...
I love Steve Barton's voice so much. Tragic he died.
I absolutely love this recording! But who is the woman singing?
Elaine Caswell, I think!
it happens that a young person can have a voice of an old person, even thoughthe person is young
@audiesgirl Yes, it's Barton.
Muito lindo!
@thesoundofmusicality
he isn´t german, he is from the usa but he sings akcentless. He was amazing
I'm obsessed with it! lol.
Who is the woman that sings this? And i mean the actress not the character. I know the character is Sarah.
Also ehrlich die deutsch Version ist ja mal 1000 Mal besser;)
wenn man vorher das original von Bonnie Tyler kannte, dann nicht dann ist die englische version für einen deutlich besser aber alles geschmackssache
Was this recorded before the Broadway production? Did they only record this? Or is there a full cast album in english?
@emlodik
i know that this is steve barton, but i prefer his german version of total eclipse of the heart
@rayna181 Sarah is sung by Elaine Caswell
this is a good song, but i prefer the austrian version with steve barton
he was an amazing singer and an amazing actor
Steve we miss you
this reminds me to "forgetting sarah marshall"
Belgium version..? Where?
Totale Duisternis.
Oh?
Do any of these have the SCENE too?!
Is there a UA-cam recording of the French version of this?
This song is absolutely goregous. I personally think this one is better than the Bonnie Tyler version.
Sounds great!^^
But the voice of the women somehow sounds too grown up since her character Sarah is supposed to be 17^^
Is there any chance to find this song in Russian, Italian and Japanese? If so, where can I find it?
ua-cam.com/video/JNKybgmyM08/v-deo.html
This is in Japanese
ua-cam.com/video/oGVI_scmDBM/v-deo.html
In Russian
ua-cam.com/video/X-ID5ODHF-c/v-deo.html
In Italian
@emlodik But the song was written by steinamn originally so it really doesn't matter
Of course I love Steve's voice more than anything, ever since I saw "Tanz der Vampire" for the first time, when I was 8 years old in 1999. But the womans voice... It's good without a doubt... But it's definitely not suited for this role.
I wish I could sing so I can be on broadway and famous and then become a star of hollywood!!
@Turtilie This is the original song.. The germans should be sued for copywrite infringement!
2024?
@Turtilie
I prefer the Hungarian version. It's much more beautiful and the lyrics have a higher quality.
i desperately am searching for the track that plays when sarah and nadja encounter the vampires after they sing that ''angel'' song
will people stop saying the german is better. it's the same Krolock damn it...
@maniboi1027 Definitely not Crawford, likely Barton. I wasn't aware there was in OCR of this, the show was such a disaster.
This song will always be tinted by Bonnie Tyler's rendition.
This is better
The American yes
@@katiebayliss9887Bonnie is Welsh
wie ist da eigentlich der deutsche titel davon? also das ist ja nicht 'Nie gesehn' oder?
Jane Smith totale finsternis
the girl in the musical.
Is there a CD of this musical?
it closed prematurely so no
Yes, but in German.
Ist das Cornelia Zenz?
Deutscher Titel ist "totale Finsternis" und wenn die auf englisch Turn around singen kommt in der deutschen Version "sei bereit"
I honestly prefer the english lyrics, they are more deep and beautiful :)
@TheGooglhupf Roman Polanski is a native german speaker!!! Very, very good joke :P
Wait...okay, this might make me sound ignorant, but I thought this was a Bonnie Tyler song...which came first? lol
