      D008 is what id go for, cable management is nice to have & those long metal screws looks better then the plastic stuff that looks like its from a plastic cutting board.
      Kind of have a self made test bench from an older compaq tower from 2002 most panels were pretty much removable so its fairly bare bones & 5.25 bay can also rotate the drives so it works as a desktop pc.

      I find things that I don't like in both, and to be honest, I wouldn't buy neither one of them. I consider them both pricey, and both are flawed, at least regarding my criteria. Though, I consider the QDIY is a better option overall.

      For "quick and dirty" I'd just go the loose (motherboard box) route, while for a semi-permanent (card tester), there doesn't seem to much advantage (and certainly more cost) compared to a cheap case with the side left open.
      I know some people run a permanent testbench / skeleton / open setup, but personally, the Cougar Conquer is the pug-ugliest thing I've ever seen

      The Chinese one seems well designed. I would even go further and use a no-slip drawer mat (similar to the rubber mat the HighSpeed has) and ignore using the mounting brackets for the power and drives. Also, once you screw in 2 screws on opposite sides for the motherboard, you don't need to do anymore. With these two things in mind, I don't see the HighSpeed one being "faster."

    HOLY-COW! Being in the US, I cannot recommend getting the QDIY just for the price alone. The cheapest I can find is AliExpress (link in description) for $53 USD but $47 USD for shipping. Other sellers sell them for $200 USD! (Performance PCs, modDIY, FrozenCPU) I can get a steel Lian Li test bench for $100 with some nice features too. I'm thinking that the QDIY is less of a test bench and more of the base of a custom acrylic case. They sell different acrylic side panels to attach to this thing.

    I currently use a 1956 Pontiac shop manual as my "test bench." It holds the board being tested high enough off the work bench for the mounting brackets on the plug-in cards to hang down, and it supports the entire motherboard so that it doesn't flex when plugging in cards, RAM, power connectors, etc. Of course, this doesn't address the problem of where to put the HDD/optical drive and PSU, but I have plenty of work space.
    I was using a phone book, but I was a bit concerned about giving away my location during live streams.

  • @etimacias
    @etimacias 6 років тому +2

    Left one (Top Deck) is awesome as you can replace motherboard on it in seconds - just unscrew 2 screws and that's it. If you have one motherboard for a long time it's better to use some sturdier ones, like QDIY one or Lian Li PC-T60. Also Top Decks are known for a problems with ESD. I didn't have them, but I heard of couple boards dying due to that. Also Top Deck have issues with some VGA cards, as they don't have clearance for plastic support.

  • @mrcrunch8000
    @mrcrunch8000 6 років тому +8

    Wow, I didn't realize how over priced they are. I wouldn't go for either. I find it insulting they are charging as much as actual cases. Generally for the same price or cheaper you get a nice case with multiple fans and rgb. The US version looks especially cheap and I always assumed it was $50 or less.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 років тому +2

      Fair comment. I think it comes down to numbers sold of cases vs test benches. Other test benches cost even more, these are really some of the cheapest ones. For what I do a case is just way too much hassle, but I do get your point of view.

    Up until about 14:47 I thought you'd filmed the assembly of one test bench, and then the other. But you had two sets of the exact same components!
    Personally I prefer the Top Deck, as the whole point of a test bench to me is the ability to swap hardware out quickly.
    Even with all of the mounting solutions on the D008, I'd still be wary of jostling it too much.

  • @jameslewis2635
    @jameslewis2635 6 років тому +2

    It seems strange to me that I find that the Chinese test bench seems to be better for use as a testbench for modern hardware. My reasoning is that generally you would be likely to re-use the same PSU, optical drive and hard drive/SSD for each lot of hardware on test. The main downside is the traditional spacer and screw in combo for attaching the motherboard. To me it makes more sense when building a test bench to invert the spacers so that you would simply be placing the motherboard over the spacer threads for faster hardware changes, just having a couple mounted in the standard manner (for instance at opposing corners) would be absolutely fine for securing a motherboard. One thing I would change from this kit is to change from regular screws for mounting the motherboard to thumb screws - being tool free just saves time and effort.
    Also having the switching pre-installed on the bench itself is neat, it is just one less thing that you can lose. In the use case here where there are a lot of systems using either IDE or SATA I would want to load up an extra caddy tray so that when you switch to between vintage and modern hardware rather than taking the tray out, removing old drives and installing new drives before sliding the caddy back in you would just slide the old caddy out and then the new one in.

  • @nastysdsi
    @nastysdsi 6 років тому

    I think that if you need a more permanent build, you might as well use a regular case, which also protects the electronic components. The quick one is still useful, though!

  • @Edman_79

    I'd vote for D008. Looks better equipped and is cheaper. I just hate the plastic beam on the Top Deck. I would also not worry about the possibility of dropping a screw while the machine is running. I usually change stuff only in off state anyway. Never did anything screw-wise on a running PC.

    I personally have the Open Benchtable, as i do switch hardware quite often for benching. My personal rig is on a case, however i do tend to test a lot of CPUs and video cards, and needed some sturdy test bench setup, especially since my cooler choice is the Thermalright TRUE Copper, which alone weighs 1900g. The OBT is a very sturdy yet lightweight test bench.
    If i were to pick between those two, i think i'd go with the Tech Station, just because of the sturdiness it has, but i'd replace the PCI-E holder with a metal bar or something better. I love the QDIY PCI-E holding mechanism tho, it seems to be very similar to the one in my OBT and it is a well made mechanism.

  • @Bige4u

    Definately over priced on both, but ideal for those that do multiple system reviews a day and have sponsors that have paid for them or was given free for a review itself, but as an individual... i like the "Top Deck" version for the quicker build, but would love to see a hybrid from both of these combined.

    Did you ever see that mini itx test bench that looks like a "spider" from Lian Li. A spider with 4 legs, heh. I think it was the PC-T1R model. Came out several years ago. It did seem a bit over the top and was fairly expensive at the time.
    I think Lian Li also released another test bench not too long ago, the PC-T70. Can accomodate up to EATX motherboards. I wanted a test bench before, but couldn't justify the price as I don't change out components that often and I do have extra cases sitting around.

    Are there mATX test benches available?
    I like the Chinese one better; looks far more professional, and I don't like the card tilt on the Top Deck...I know it's not _that_ much of an issue, but I still don't like it. In addition, the integrated front panel buttons on the D008 makes it a bit more convenient, and the fact that it _does_ include so many extras means that you have more options in how you want to set your test bench set up. And I like my options when it comes to computer equipment. I don't personally mind having to take a few extra minutes to set something up.

    Where's that nice black and yellow PhilsComputerLab test bench for this vs video? It could have been USA v China v Australia.
    I don't know if I'd go for either. Everything just sits there with the HighSpeed, just waiting to slide off. With the QDIY, switching back and forth from different board layouts looks to be troublesome. You have to move the standoffs around for ATX and Mini-ATX and if that base board is plastic, you'll eventually strip the holes for the stand-offs. If I had to choose, I'd go with the HighSpeed but only after adding something to hold stuff in place underneath and doing something about that expansion card bar.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 років тому

      You can replace a few of the rubber things with standoffs on the Top Deck, but not all of them. The black and yellow thing is my own creation, and cost much more than these, can you believe it? Because it is custom and gets built in the US.

      China's domestic edition - or more specifically, the origin - of AliExpress.
      Most sellers on Taobao don't ship worldwide, some surely does that however. I dunno if there is package transferring companies that does business from here to worldwide; if there is, it's definitely going to be a bargain if you get Chinese products in bulk and import them in one go.

    I've had that exact Techstation for over 15 years and pre-built at least a dozen PC's with it and it still looks new. I don't care for the D008 at all. For one thing the flexing of the motherboard deck is a major issue. Installing RAM and expansion cards will flex a board and what it's mounted to needs to be solid even if its temporary to prevent damage. For another thing speed is key with a test bench like this as the whole point is to easily and quickly get the system built. Too much fussing with mounts on the D008. Back in the bad old days warranties were very short and testing your components the minute you got them was very important. Nothing is worse than waiting 3 months to build a system and finding out you've got a bad board, RAM or CPU that's now out of warranty. These are not meant for long term use. There are open-design cases meant for that. The D008 is more open case than test bench as I see it. Metal standoffs and card retainers bear that out. BTW mine came with a hard drive mount that fit on the underside of the motherboard deck. There are other options like that available as well.

      I did mentioned the hard drive mount...

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 6 років тому

      the flex is easily fixed with a small wood dowel, and the speed aspect is fixed by using screw rods about a centimeter long into the top of the standoffs so the motherboard can just slip on.. and I use on screw in the middle to make it stable.

      I bought a jacked up Corsair 200R at a thrift shop for $10, used a die-grinder and hacked it up and mounted it to plywood and a couple 2x4's. Its ghetto but it works well. The DIYPC Alpha isnt a bad set-up either.

    Awesome video. I'd take the chinese one cause im From middle europe so the shipping cost would be a lot less And it would be a lot cheaper. I have a question are 2 x79 untested but straight pin ASRock motherboards worth 100 bucks. I need a anwser ASAP cause if yes i need to pick them up today

    Hi All - com·pli·ca·tions beat me 2 hours ago :(
    I made my first one out of plywood and 50mm x 50mm times, plenty of space between bottom layer and deck to cover the large AT power supplies.
    On the plywood was a old PC case base that must have had about 20 stand off holes ( one size fits all ) i had probably 10 plastic stand offs in it and 4 to 6 stand offs with where threaded to make a holding down screw from the motherboard.
    The card edge holder was again a cut of from the end panel where the card blanks were cut from the original pc case
    On the other side ( not the isa card side ) , i had mounted a front panel cut of with power , reset , turbo , hdd led , power led and speaker - again from another old PC case that sort of looked like it fitted in a 5.25 drive bay blank card ( hmm the pc had some 5.25 bays but all the front swithgear and lights were in a panel that resembled a 5.25 blank , sort of how the usb / multi media / sd cards units look like
    Overall i had a plastic lunch box to contain all screws ,sata , ide , floppy cables and molex double adapters
    Looking back yes, i did keep all the extra long cables, i never thought to use a jig saw and run a few slots in the top layer to allow a shorter route for cable management
    Freight to Australia is expensive, and i am suprised the asian one was that expensive in freight

  • @alexbakaloff
    @alexbakaloff 6 років тому

    Why are they so expensive????? You can buy a decent case for only 50$ and these are just sheets of metal with legs in between...

  • @PiercedJedi

    I think the semi-permanent style of the D008 is because power supply and drive config isn't going to change much for most reviewers and secure motherboard installation is probably better so when you start pulling cards off the board it doesn't pull off with them, I like the look of it a bit better and the fact that the power/reset buttons and LEDs are built in is really nice, I watch some reviewers who take a key to short the power button leads and I cringe every time, it's not that it's dangerous, but c'mon you can afford a GTX 1080 Ti, buy a $0.30 power switch...

  • @jort93z

    why did they use a plastic support rail? Seems like they just saved money. Don't understand why they do that for $100
    I also like the holes on the QDIY test bench a lot. the other one looks quite messy.

    • @Vans_WW
      @Vans_WW 3 роки тому

      @@philscomputerlab The good old motherboard box! Not having to screw on the mainboard does seem extremely handy upon further reflection. I wonder if such a setup could be achieved in the chinese one, somehow. In either case, the "doob" is no longer sold apparently. :)

      keep up the amazing videos anyway dude, maybe there could be a chance of seeing some old OGL cards benchmarked against somewhat newer cards in workstation productivity, like a early generation quadro cards vs a high end gaming card (of the era) obviously the price differerences at the time would have been HUGE but now , notsomuch. might be interesting to see what the comparative performance would have been back in the day.
