This is the most based game I've ever seen. It's silly as fuck. It leans hard into stereotypes and memes. No political pandering. Just a dumb concept made into a fun game. I'm sold.
It seemed like Asmongold initially didn't get the premise of this game in the beginning? This is set in a parallel world, set in an imaginary 66th year of Emperor Showa's reign (he actually died in year 64 of his reign, so there was never a year of Showa 66) or a parallel 1991. In this parallel world, the US had been largely or entirely bought and colonized by Japan during its bubble economy period where it was said that just the real estate in Tokyo was worth more than all the real estates in the US combined. But 10 years prior to the event of the story, a zombie apocalypse hit the US. The main character's sister disappeared and she set out on a road trip to look for her.
The entire game is based on a meme: "The economic bubble in the Showa era in Japan was so massive that if you sold all the property in Tokyo, you'd have enough money to buy all of America."
true, we had an hyperinflation crisis at the end of the 80's in argentina we sold our embassy in Tokyo for an amount equivalent to the reserves we had in our plummeted central bank 400usd millon (2.000usd of today) 🤣🤣
And as a white man, I approve of your approval. According to the left, I'm required to say this out loud....since only our approval means anything or something I guess. 🤷♂
Chinese game developers are cooking right now. Wukong then this is gonna drop. Sure some terrible games come out every year, but so do the bangers. This looks like a Chinese Saints Row and I'm so here for it.
They're stereotypes, but they were made with so much love and happiness and coolness that people would legit try to live up to them! Who wouldn't want to be able to pull off that bison-horn spandex strong-man wielding a giant tire-hammer look? 😍
A Chinese made American-Japanese story, which were purely fabricated using stereotypes, has been praised as being more aligned with Japanese culture than the "historically accurate game" Assassin's Creed: Shadow. How absurd and surreal it is.
That is actually the perfect description of this game It is the Chinese notion of how they think Japan is obsessed with America The Chinese stereotype of Japan's idealised fantasy of America.
though the devs claimed that they were only setting the background story with stereotypes fpr fun, Showa American Story is still far more authentic then Ubi's assasins creed XD
yes, now even Final Fantasy become an apologist Game, like they felt shameful about their own game, they probably got bullied by Bethesda back in 2012 or something, for making a nonsense fantasy game that had nothing to do with medieval, dragon and other generic medieval fantasy stuff
Because It is a work of a Chinese company. that's why so crazy. If it were a Japanese company, they would definitely not have the courage to do it like this. I'll give you an example. In 2021, South Korea made a film that depicted South Korea becoming a major player in space exploration, ranking second in the world, just behind the United States. Even in their wildest dreams, they wouldn't dare put themselves in first place, but instead put the United States in first

@@PHILF-pv9dythis is a Chinese game. And there are still quite a lot of non woke western studios. You just have to look at indie to AA and avoid most AAA
@@PHILF-pv9dy chinese dev and china has been consistent with its media. the stories they have been releasing have been good. they have seriously eased up on censorship and have been releasing very good media lately. from manhua to donghua to games. they dont shy away from blood or villainry and rarely pander. some of the most popular donghua have villains that r%%e and kill and the MC has to slaughter his entire bloodline for revenge. they see the wests downfall and are hungry.
Sadly Japanese game companies themselves are infected by the same stuff the west is too. It's why most Japanese games are toothless and heavily censored lately. The same people pushing DEI in the west are pushing it in Japan. Chinese devs are under no such limitations, though. They have their own CCP-mandated limitations, which in many ways aren't as strict as in the west. I hate this timeline.
@@Kanaleah Nah, CCP also has very weird ultra strict limitations, just not the ones we are used to. They have the most random limitations like "no bones"
@@diablo.the.cheater They do, but they've been getting somewhat better about it recently. A lot of the restrictions on sexualized content got scaled back recently. The CCP is still a huge issue, but I think even with the CCP censoring Chinese games, they'll still be better products than anything in Japan because of how captured Japan is by ESG now.
@@Kanaleah To be fair, the CCP isn't really the problem. You'd be surprised how lenient the Chinese censorship board actually is outside of clearly political stuff. The real problem is that in China there is a national association of moms (yes, I kid you not) that has a direct line to the Chinese government through the petition system, and they're behind the crazy stuff we see like the old ban on game consoles and the censorship of blood and boobs from anime. The irony here is that, while the PRC does have an authoritarian government, they do still have to listen to public opinion to maintain stability, and because they have no democratic channels to understand public opinion, public pressure associations have a disproportionate weight in influencing public policy.
@@Kanaleahas Chinese I can give you a bit more the context here. The CCP is heavily censoring games published and released in China, which requires every game to acquire a censorship certificate to be able to sold. Now here's the thing, Steam or other online platforms are technically in the grey areas, which means "yes they're not legal but nobody is taking care of it", and China has a HUGE amount of these grey areas in any aspect. So the game will never be openly sold in China even it's a Chinese game, so no sales in the game stores or so, but since there were so little games available back then, everyone just downloaded pirated versions, then Steam came out, so people moved to Steam. So to summarize, this is a game that people in China can openly talk about (because it's not offending CCP), not-so-openly play, but nobody is getting caught for. That's the real CCP standards on gaming, they care but they also don't care
As a chinese born in the 80s, this game makes me both laugh and cry. It reminds me of the scorching summer when I was 12, lying in bed all day with nothing to do, listening to the creaking of an old electric fan. My mind was filled with the wildest and most chaotic daydreams, a mix of all the Japanese anime and American movies I had seen, along with a naive teenager's most wild and ridiculous imaginations of Japan and America, places I had never been. Historical accuracy? I don't know. But I assure you, this game is 100% love and respect for both Japan and America.
@@blcheah2672 I don't think so? I am as lefty as I can be, and this seems a much better game that the slop that we have been having recently. Maybe, I'm talking about a great possibility. In the near future, most good games will be made in China. Perhaps, you should get used to entering the century of China. Whether you like it or not.
The ideological constraints of traditional developed countries are too heavy, and the average third world country does not have the ability to make such a large investment.
@@DR.Don1899 That's not easy to do, the Chinese gaming industry invests too much in handheld games and the return on handheld games is too high, which makes a lot of Chinese capital not too willing to invest in the traditional gaming industry, but Black Myth Wukong is a good place to start.

BTW... 2025 is actually Showa 100... Which is when the story in the game happens... So game release in 2025 = game released at the very same year the story in the game happens!!
According to the developers, it was supposed to be released last year or so, but their contracted outsourcing studio was hired by another project, and this project had to be delayed. Guess who hired the studio? Black Myth: Wukong.
This comes from a meme. In Japanese, "馬鹿 (baka)" means "stupid." When you split the two kanji characters, they become "馬 (uma)," meaning horse, and "鹿 (shika)," meaning deer. Therefore, a giraffe dyed in the colors of a wild horse is used here to recreate this meme.
"Hey remember when the Americans were all panicking because they thought the Japanese were going to buy their country out from under them? What if that, and two decades worth of batshit insane memes and tropes from the 80's & 90's, cranked up to 11?" "Sir, I think you need more sleep, and less caffeine, and less booze. Or possibly more booze, I'm not really really sure how it works with you, but you are definitely not consuming the correct amount of booze at this time."
This game awakened an emotion in me completely alien to human psychology. I have no idea how to process or what I should call it. It's like the director had a lucid fever dream and managed to express it in its truest form. He doesn't forget his dreams. He writes them down in chapters. He is utterly inhuman.
This game hits every trope I grew up with as a consumer of anime/manga and Japanese gaming in the 90's. As a Gen Xer from America I feel this game speaks to me. I AM the target audience.
"Here we have the rare Xer in the wild. See how he displays his plumage to attract other Xers..." Yeah, this game is an easy pick. Another good one this year or next will be that "army of the damned" style game where you take your buick and your shotgun back to mideval times. Western AAA gaming is a mess but meanwhile, in the east...
So western studio decided to crap on Japan with their black samurai, then eastern studio retaliated by crapping all over America with their weeb powers)) Btw as an old anime fan some of the songs/music really hit me with nostalgia of 80-90s anime.....
The song is called "Soregadaiji" , It has a Cantonese version from HK which was very famous earlier in 90s, so the music sure brings back nostalgia, only Eastern studio can make something so fun these days
I was so surprised when I heard this tune. Growing up in a cantonese speaking family, I have always heard the cantonese version. I never knew it was originally Japanese.
@@DarkSol16 back in 70s to 90s Japanese do have many talented music creators. Yet due to the way Japanese language pronounced, the lyric is usually weak (not saying the language is bad, just how it works). So many HK singers would use the melody of Japanese songs (authorized of course), adding Chinese (Cantonese) lyrics, which makes the songs much more catchy. Like my favorite song 夕烧けの歌, by Japanese singer Kondou Masahiko (近藤真彦), was remade into 夕阳之歌 and 千千阙歌, 2 Cantonese songs, also a mandarin song 风中的承诺. 🎉🎉
Now this is the type of diversity and culture I want in a game! So happy I now know about this. Money will go towards this rather than Dragon Age: The Transitioning.
The Chinese do have a whole bunch of Party policing, but apparently they have managed to frame fandom as faceslapping. However, fandom for anime occasionally gets harshly punished in China, so hopefully this gaming company has somebody protecting the devs.
@@suburbanbanshee you dont get it though. for most part in China, as long as you are not talking anything related to the party or China, you are free to make whatever game you want, as ridiculer as you want. offending American or Japanese? good, they actually encourage you to do it.
You got to love how when we're bombarded as an audience with bullshit, out of nowhere like Gandalf and the riders of Rohan some bullshit like this masterpiece comes out that makes gaming all worth it again. I love you Showa American Story. In a sea of disappointment, I'm human again.
They understand Japanese culture properly, respect it, and express it in a funny way. From a Japanese perspective, the expression of the Showa era in this game is overwhelming. Even though it is a Chinese game, Japanese people feel nostalgic. It's like the good old SEGA. UBI, this is what true respect and games are. Those are things that ACS does not have.
I think it's bcos people tend to only think of freedom of speech as a legal matter, when it's also a matter of culture. Left-wing and right-wing culture in America for example will tolerate different things when it comes to speech/expression.
Have you ever thought that the idea, or the definition of “freedom” might be different as you know? Or let’s say the definition of “freedom” might be manipulated in the “free” countries
“A bland, insensitive, and repetitive slog through offensive scene after another; showa American story is a messy unoriginal post apocalyptic mess” 3/10 IGN
Stereotyping actually makes charactors distinctive. In game design, it helps players to understand the scene quickly and easily. Most games with string style use stereo type in their work. The western developers are trying to do the oppisite atm tho. That's sad, the talents in the indistry is still good but the storywriting...
Doctor: "I have some news about your baby." Parents: "Don't tell us the gender, we want to keep it a surprise." Doctor: "Oh I get it, you're those type of people. Okay, well IT is not breathing."
Things like this give me hope that in 20 years when the older generations pass on obsessed with cutting the other down, Chinese and Americans are going to get along. There's way too much similarities in the culturally amongst the "average person" and in terms of mentality between us in desires and what both enjoy.
I feel like while geopolitics are always going to be at each others' throats, when you zoom down to the average gamer, the objective is simple regardless of race and culture, just...want fun games? imo
@@winghong3 Its things like this were you see unfiltered "fun" that you have hope that things will be okay in the future. Not even the great firewall can contain goodnatured humor.

Interesting so the Gokou character might be the villain then
So the US sold All of America to Japan and the US got all of Tokyo in exchange?
Literally wolfenstein
@@prisoner817final boss possibly
So basically Heisei 2?
The entire game is based on a meme: "The economic bubble in the Showa era in Japan was so massive that if you sold all the property in Tokyo, you'd have enough money to buy all of America."
Also it wasn't an entirely outrageous nutcase idea at the time lol Also the story of this game began in year Showa 66, but the Showa era ended at 65
What if it was America that bought all the property?
What if America bought the property, the it would be swappsies

@@PHILF-pv9dy chinese dev and china has been consistent with its media. the stories they have been releasing have been good. they have seriously eased up on censorship and have been releasing very good media lately. from manhua to donghua to games. they dont shy away from blood or villainry and rarely pander. some of the most popular donghua have villains that r%%e and kill and the MC has to slaughter his entire bloodline for revenge. they see the wests downfall and are hungry.
Eastern devs once again demonstrating their ability to elevate any concept into a masterpiece by making it unapologetically deranged.
Chinese developers cooked more cultural accurate than assassin creed shadow

This comes from a meme. In Japanese, "馬鹿 (baka)" means "stupid." When you split the two kanji characters, they become "馬 (uma)," meaning horse, and "鹿 (shika)," meaning deer. Therefore, a giraffe dyed in the colors of a wild horse is used here to recreate this meme.
