Passionately, profoundly straziante. One and Only. Callas's powerful voice moves me into the abyss of despair of an unrequited love Madame Butterfly feels.

It's so wonderful to read all the different ways people came upon this song. For me, I first heard it in the first part of the anthology "Memories" by Katsuhiro Otomo. The first part is called "The Magnetic Rose" and has a script by Satoshi Kon (who made Perfect Blue, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress and Paranoia Agent). This piece is a central part of the film's soundtrack and informs the narrative somewhat. The part that amazed me is that you can feel the sorrow of the song, the emotion, the power behind it, even having not seen Madama Butterfly before. I loved it so much I made it a point to go see an opera of Madama Butterfly live. When I did, I somehow got a seat just 2 rows back, center stage. When the diva began to perform this song, it was beautiful. So much emotion in the lyrics, they incredible artistry she performed with her voice. I remember looking up at the Diva and seeing tears in her eyes as she performed. It was so beautiful it moved me to tears with the song. Music is amazing.
like Callas, the opera singer who lived on that space station/ship also lost her voice and suffered a fall from grace, so i think Satoshi Kon must have drawn inspiration, to some extent, from the real Maria Callas.
That's the thing esp with opera... sometimes understanding the words isn't necessary.... the voice and music tells the whole story. 🥺 makes me cry everytime.

Brutal. It really is. My wife doesn't understand why her "white husband" crumbles to puccini. Doesn't understand its only through the opera that real shit is said.
it's more of about the dying as in heart ache she will feel viewing again the loved one after such a long time of not seeing him. "just to not die at the first meeting (after the long wait)" she will need to prepare herself mentally and emotionally, just to be not fall ill for such an immense joy. But yeah, I agree that in some sense this mention of death alludes to the fact that despite the aria meaning ("I promise, he will come back, I wait for him, do not worry") she is uncertain that will ever see her loved one.
Callas aonde estiver, nós continuamos lhe amando.
She was the greatest of the great! Bravo!
By seeing the eccentric lyrics and hearing the beautifully crying voices, should know she's deadly in love. Love Puccini
Столько боли а голосе, плачет, как хорошо передала героиню.
I have lost count of the Times I've Lost myself in THIS haunting song. Just listening again Sunday morning (clocks just gone back ONE hour here in the UK).

I saw the 1970's Lyric Opera production, with the revolving house set... absolutely brilliant! Unforgettable!
I heard this for the first time when I was 13. Synchronized swimmers in the 1988 Olympics did their numbers to it. And that's when I fell in love with opera music. Still moves me to tears now.
Oh how wonderful was Maria Callas?I treasure everything that she has performed. What a magical gift she had. Thank you so much, your voice brings so much joy and l will always be in debt to you. RIP to you.😊
