Maria Callas was truly the only one to make this song truly dramatic. A true Greek goddess. I feel so thankful that she lived in an era where we could record her soprano voice. She will forever live on.

Grande Puccini y Maria Callas

God bless your grandma. She had exquisite taste. How great that you have this beautiful masterpiece to remember her by. Puccini was my daddy's favorite composer. I came here tonight to remember him, and my childhood. He's battling brain cancer and I don't have much time left with my beautiful father. He's loved Puccini all his life and I have a love for this music all because of him. He heard a Puccini song tonight and it brought him to tears.

My brother and sister had no interest and I think at first I just like the dressing up and being a pretend grownup escorting mom (we became a fixture among the other patrons as I was maybe 10 I think) which I would have liked but soon the spectacle and the music gripped me

My name is Frank. Would you believe she only sang this opera on stage in ONE production? It was not part of her regular repertoire. One critic wrote something to the effect of not wanting to hear her Butterfly again because he/she will end up liking this dreadful opera. The only time she sang it onstage was in Chicago with Giuseppe Di Stefano.

It's so wonderful to read all the different ways people came upon this song. For me, I first heard it in the first part of the anthology "Memories" by Katsuhiro Otomo. The first part is called "The Magnetic Rose" and has a script by Satoshi Kon (who made Perfect Blue, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress and Paranoia Agent). This piece is a central part of the film's soundtrack and informs the narrative somewhat. The part that amazed me is that you can feel the sorrow of the song, the emotion, the power behind it, even having not seen Madama Butterfly before. I loved it so much I made it a point to go see an opera of Madama Butterfly live. When I did, I somehow got a seat just 2 rows back, center stage. When the diva began to perform this song, it was beautiful. So much emotion in the lyrics, they incredible artistry she performed with her voice. I remember looking up at the Diva and seeing tears in her eyes as she performed. It was so beautiful it moved me to tears with the song.
    Music is amazing.

like Callas, the opera singer who lived on that space station/ship also lost her voice and suffered a fall from grace, so i think Satoshi Kon must have drawn inspiration, to some extent, from the real Maria Callas.

Butterfly which starred Jeremy Irons and John Lone or Russel Wong, if I'm not mistaken. You can really feel the pain and tragedy of this song.

I love how the start is so quiet and Callas gracefully gets louder and louder.

"just to tease him a little, just to save myself from dying"
For some reason that line hits me hard, it's as if butterfly admits that if Pinkerton won't love her back she will either die or kill herself, yet she still does her best to ignore that thought, finding it much easier to convince herself that he still loves her than to face reality

Yes this is the first time I've read the lyrics... and that particular line struck a chord with me as well.

Brutal. It really is. My wife doesn't understand why her "white husband" crumbles to puccini. Doesn't understand its only through the opera that real shit is said.

it's more of about the dying as in heart ache she will feel viewing again the loved one after such a long time of not seeing him.
"just to not die at the first meeting (after the long wait)"
she will need to prepare herself mentally and emotionally, just to be not fall ill for such an immense joy.
But yeah, I agree that in some sense this mention of death alludes to the fact that despite the aria meaning ("I promise, he will come back, I wait for him, do not worry") she is uncertain that will ever see her loved one. And in case he won't come, or even worse, he comes but just to say adios one last time (he doesn't love her) she will die

I remember this when my mom introduced it to me when I was around 8ish, I didn't understand Italian so my mom explained the opera, I thought of it as so sad. As I became an adult. I cry so easily when I hear it. It's so sad & tragic.
