Me, too! I think the inclusion of Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island, as well as Kirby's Superstar, EarthBound, F-Zero, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG and Star Fox in addition to Zelda 3 would be great!
I am 100% going to buy this for me and my kids who are 6 & 7. I was born in 1980 and I was an only child with a single mother so I had video games my whole life. Atari, NES, Genesis, SNES, PS1, etc. For years now I've wanted to play a lot of these NES games and my only option was buying a Wii/WiiU and I just can't afford to go that route. I briefly looked into buying an original NES but that's an even more expensive option and then I'd have the headache of possible technical issues with old systems. I just can't wait to finally be able to share these games with my boys. They know of a lot of them but only from The Wizard and UA-cam. I still remember all the little secrets in SMB3 even after all these years. And I was the only kid in my school who beat Punch Out. And I never got into Zelda or Metroid so those will be new to me too. And maybe now that I'm grown up I'll be able to finally figure out how to beat Mega Man and Castlevania.
Awesome to hear!! :) I can only imagine the excitement in sharing such things with your children. If I ever do have any, they will be very well-acquainted indeed with my Nintendo 64, hahaha! I'm sure you have, but have you heard of emulators? You can play NES games on a computer! (And just about any device nowadays, though a smartphone isn't recommended due touch screen controls not being all that handy.)
rojoshow13 Ah, sorry about that. I agree entirely, I'd LOVE for them to come out with a USB adapter specifically for this NES gamepad (some people or small companies or something have made them for many consoles, so you can use original controllers for emulation and stuff). Unless it's for real nostalgia or something, usually a game can't maintain my attention long on an emulator, and I think it's simply because I'm using a keyboard.
+chuckobscure Yeah, I owned Punch Out and it took me a really long time, and many many failures but I finally figured every guy out. And I never owned any of the Mega Man games...I rented it all the time and I could never beat it over a weekend. Pretty much any game I owned ie SMB3, I beat. And the ones I never owned but rented ie Castlevania, Mega Man, close many times but no cigar.
I totally agree! For people who aren't hardcore collectors both of those would be great. May be even an N64 if the game quality is right. I have an original SNES and don't get me wrong it's beautiful but there are so many issues
I know it's pointless but my list would be something like this: • Balloon Fight • Battletoads • Blades of steel • Bubble Bobble • Bucky O' Hare • Castlevania • Castlevania III • Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers • Double Dragon II: The Revenge • Dragon Quest III • Duck Tales • Dr. Mario • Excitebike • Final Fantasy II • Ghosts'N Goblins • Kid Icarus • Kirby's Adventure • Mega Man • Mega Man 2 • Metroid • Ninja Gaiden • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream • StarTropics • Contra • Super Mario Bros. • Super Mario Bros. 3 • R.C. Pro Am • Tecmo Super Bowl • The Legend of Zelda • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Honestly, that is a pretty fair rating. The game has some really unfair parts, but is still fun. If Super Ghouls N Ghosts was rated 3 stars, then I would understand a 4 or 5.
If it's hard doesn't mean it's bad. And I know that there are a lot of games that are hard because of bad controls, bad game design and other technical flows like the camera not being able to catch up with the character or whatever but I dont see any of those things in G&G. Sure it has its problems and it's far from being a 5 star game but still, not THAT far. Sure it's not as polished as Castlevania 1 but I'd play g&g over it any day.
"Genesis and SNES were superior ports." Not even close. Those are completely different games. Besides, the SNES G n G game is not a port to begin with.
Pat exactly. My coworker brought the NES Mini to me before I had a chance to say it. This being what they probably played a few times when they were little, sparked some nostalgia and then the whole world is enthralled for this console.
Mini Mort 2 I'll allow that, simply because you're in another country. I will not stand for it here though. "Ess En Ee Ess", "Super Nintendo", and "Super En Ee Ess" are acceptable, but not "sness". My pronunciation and opinions are law! ;-)
Pat, do you render with Sony Vegas? The motion in most of your videos has ghosting that's characteristic of Sony Vegas defaults. If you do use Vegas and you want to get rid of that, left-click on the video on your video track (to make sure you have just the video track selected and not video + audio), then right-click on the video, choose Properties, then check the "Disable resample" radio button and click OK. You'll need to do that same thing for each video/clip you have, so if you import multiple clips, be aware of that. Also, if you're using one large clip, disable resampling first, and then as you split/edit your clip, each sub-clip therefrom will already have that property applied to it! Just disregard this whole thing if you don't use Vegas, obviously, lol. =)
River City Ransom would have been a nice inclusion (same with Little Samson), but they're going more for games that the average joe knows, not dire-hards
This is true, but given its obscurity in its day and rarity now, it's hard to get a chance to play it again (legally). I'm not including ROM's here, so there is that, but has there been a digital Little Samson dropped out there? Was it on Taito Legends, I honestly do not know so correct me if I'm wrong? Bubble Bobble is on this, so that's Taito. I wonder if this is leading into something in the works. Little Samson is one of my 10 favorite NES games, btw :D
a lot of the people in the retro gaming market know of Little Samson, and maybe a couple who read articles that have titles like "Your old NES games could be worth thousands of dollars!" or something, but I guarantee the general public has no fucking clue of it.
Ehhh, but that wasn't really an indication of more interest. They've been re-releasing and marketing retro titles on their consoles going back to the GBA.
the thing is to, theres no reason why there couldn't be an SD card slot (or DS Slot, since they have 1000's of them already) under the flap in the front, then later release a basically a DS game that will give you more games at another 30. if next summer they released, another 15 games at 30 using the tech and parts they already have from the DS to make a cart to fit in the thing, i have no doubt that would sell as well.
I'd rather see an upgraded version of the NES mini with a cartridge slot before we see a SNES version with only built-in games again. Either way hopefully the product is successful so they keep making consoles like this in the future.
they could combine it with an amiibo type idea. THey did it with flash cards before either. It doesn't have to be a cart. Just some storage and something that gives you the game. But I don't think that's how these things work. It's a one time purchase type thing.
the only thing is if they made a N64 version it would probably only have 2-3 games from Rare just because it's a 3rd party company now but im sure microsoft would play nice with a couple games,
We'd most likely be able to get Banjo Kazooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day. There's no way we'd get both banjo games though. Maybe we could get lucky and get Jet Force Gemini or Perfect Dark, but probably not both. We'd get DK 64 and probably Diddy Kong racing which are both Rare. The biggest problem would be that it would feel incomplete without Goldeneye, which even Rare and Microsoft can't get anymore, but could you imagine the hype if they somehow got it for an N64 mini, it would be insane.
I'm most curious about whether the flap opens, not because there's any cartridge to insert anymore, but just to give us the full retro experience of blowing in there before we turn on the system.
a good thing about this is that for the pricepoint it becomes a great christmas present for a younger person, i got given an old NES when i was maybe 3 or 4 ( around 1996/7) the games are simple enough for a youngster to get into and engaging enough to keep them (and older players) coming back periodically for a few years. the 3ds ports of pokemon r/b/y showed how well an older game can sell based on the nostalgia and/or reputation of the title while being near enough unchanged
Technically they already did this 12 years ago. They had a super famicom mini collection in 2004 but it was a GBA SP with famicom color scheme. Their were 30 Famicom games released. It was changed to the Nes mini series here.
The best thing about retro-style consoles is that they're easy to use, more-so when the games are built-in. I can give this to my nephews and they can plug it in and play without any fiddling on my part. The biggest problem with emulators/Pi based systems is all the gotchas and how much you have to fiddle with it, because at the end of the day it is still a full computer with just some apps running on top of it. I've built Pi-based systems as "appliance-like" as I can, hiding away as much cruft as possible, but there's always something - an app crashes and takes you to a command line, or different emulators have different commands to bring up menus, etc. That's fine for me, but for anyone else there's always the point at which I need to come over and "fix it" for them.
I think they should have included a cartridge slot for mini NES carts they could have released mini versions of the boxed games Im sure it would take off like the Amiibo's. As for the parts they would only need to use a Like a USB port that does not cost much im sure they could produce cart games at the same cost as Amillbo's
+Mark Plott have you been in their factories and storage facilities? Is there a word from Nintendo that they lost the ability? Or are you just repeating what someone pulled out of his ass?
Kevin De Bondt I am citing a industry news article I red about 3 - 4 years ago. forget which outlet it was but it pretty much confirms. around the same time, there were rumors of a retro device created by Nintendo. And the same day Wisdom Tree announces the are working on a NES clone in the shape of a controller ! which there is a kickstarter for today .people were speculating as they are today, with same arguments. and I'm fairly certain that a Nintendo engineer confirms it as well on one of the you tube forums. its been a while and I forget the original thread. Believe me or not but the NES original hardware is dead. only modders and people with original carts are keeping the NES alive. here is an idea ? why not try to get Nintendo of America to Fix a broken NES ? I bet they cant ! though maybe the repair techs can tell you why ?
Does not need to run on Original hardware, id sooner have a modern system like this one that works on modern TV's but with the ability to play games from off a small cart with a ROM file built in.
I've pre-ordered one for my little girl who will be almost 3 years old this Christmas. She tries to play Mario Kart on my wii u and can't get the coordination together. This is safe content wise and simple for her to get engaged in gaming. I'm excited that she will be able to experience all these games for the first time with unjaded fresh eyes and I'll be able to revisit them with her. This is an extremely smart move before NX to remind people how they fell in love with their consoles to begin with.
you are seriously overthinking it, its a plug n play , rarely do those have more than 30 games and its likely that they will have a volume 2 down the line. if you like games and Nintendo get this. I still am :)
I think it's brilliant considering retro is cool again, the 80's is cool again. You've got genres of music now that mimic 80's synths, you've got retro chiptune music and you've of coarse got the new games that imitate the retro pixel-art style. I think it's really the perfect time to release something like this.
If you have an Android phone, you can download an emulator and hook up a Bluetooth controller. Then you can also play NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Sega Genesis, and PlayStation 1, and a lot more.
***** Like a handheld console the same size as a Game Boy Color or Pocket with a backlit color screen and preloaded with Game Boy games, is that too much to ask for?
as the father of a 3-soon-to-be-4 year old who plays super mario bros all day long on his 3ds, you bet your ass i'm getting this. the NES is such a timeless system and it's the perfect console for beginning gamers and veterans alike. this will definitely beat our current setup of playing nes games emulated on my macbook plugged into our TV with ps3 controllers when we want to play the games together as a family.
Probably, has Tecmo ever released a rom of Super Bowl where they removed all of the names and licensed graphics like they did with the original Tecmo Bowl?
Have to disagree a little on Tecmo Bowl being more played than Tecmo Super Bowl. Super Bowl was far superior and there is a large amount of people who referred to Super Bowl as just "Tecmo Bowl". The simple reason for Tecmo Bowl being chosen over Tecmo Super Bowl is the presence of the NFL license. Either Nintendo did not want to pay the extra cash to the NFL or they were unable to republish the game due to EA's exclusive license it currently has with the NFL. Regardless, I am very excited about this product and I hope it does well enough for there to be a SNES or even possibly an N64 version.
Fair enough. Honestly, I am amazed at the 3rd party support for this product. Kudos to Nintendo for going the extra mile and securing a title like Tecmo Bowl when they could have mailed it in by using their own (inferior) title, Play Action Football.
With all the money nintendo is making off of Pokemon Go they could have at least put a cartridge slot on the NES mini. I mean come on they put one on the Genesis "flashback".
I told my coworker I found an NES a few years back for about $4 at a thrift store that we found out we both love going to. She got so ecstatic and said she wishes she could find one for that but then she mentioned not knowing how to hook it up to her hdtv and all of the issues that the average person would have. This would be perfect for someone like her. Hell, if my girlfriend got me this for our anniversary or christmas I'd still be happy. She loves bubble bobble and I can see us spending hours playing just that. There is a market for this even if you yourself don't care much for it. I already have my NES with a multicart with 150 original games but its not HD. For $60 to play most of the games I'd care about in HD, with a bunch of games I know my girlfriend, little sister, and other friends would want to play, this is a fantastic deal.
wonder which stores will be selling them? And how many scalpers are going to buy them in mass to screw everyone else over? Too bad Contra 1 & 2 is not on the list of games.
That's my only worry. I really hope Nintendo ships enough to accommodate anyone who wants to buy this, and doesn't pull another Amiibo mishap. The scumbag resellers will be all over this if they don't. But I can see these being available pretty much anywhere, retail wise.
This could be the best idea NIntendo has had for years. Just wish they had more games (or that we could add games?) They have essentially unlimited storage so. Would have loved to have Tecmo world cup soccer and the other Tecmo games on here.
Yes and no. Niantic is owned by nintendo if i'm not mistaken. I believe they are a subsidiary of nintendo. That's why their stock price rose when pokemon go hit it big.
You asked in the video Pat what suddenly made Nintendo do refocus on its retro division, and I think I have the answer. Nintendo said recently that their focus is to strengthen it's visibility on their IPs, so having a clone console with most of its major properties is a perfect way to do so. With this console they can ignite the nostalgia factor for people who haven't played an NES for decades, as well as give it's library of games more mainstream exposure to younger crowds. This will be key for getting people excited for things like the Nintendo theme park attraction and it's movie lineup.
Hey guys I just notes something. So far Nintendo is only releasing The NES Classic Edition to the US and UK market but as of now I don't see ANY Japanese "Famicom Classic Edition" for Japan at all?
If you live in Australia... you'll understand why the NES Classic is a fucking lifesaver. I went into an Op Shop the other day and they had a dirty yellowed SNES priced for $170!!! fuck that.
I've experienced the same thing: people I who aren't into video games are bringing this up to me, and every time I tell them how much it will cost, they have always said they want it. Very awesome.
8:28 THANK YOU. I have been arguing this point for the past week. The NES mini is designed for the Mass Market, NOT the niche collectors or the hardcore retro gamer. My wife doesn't want a PC in our living room, we can't fit one. I had a Pi and it was a pain in the ass to work with. I keep my NES in my game room and don't want to buy another, nor do I want my carts out in the living room. So, yes, I WILL be buying this so my wife and son can have great NES experiences without us having to spend a ton of money, blow money on eShop games, or deal with emulators.
Could you maybe find out if the European version of this thing has the PAL or the 60 Hz games on it? I have the misfortune of living in Europe and I want to know if it's worth buying this or not
It appeals to everyone. Casuals that just want to play their old games, collectors who love official Nintendo products, people who want a cheap way of playing NES games via HDMI, people who just love the aesthetics of a mini NES. Great price point. Definite purchase for me
I absolutely LOVE this, and even though I have the raspberry pi and emulators and all that stuff, I'm going to buy it if only to show Nintendo that I approve. I'm so stoked for this.
I would love a SNES version of this, that is the one Nintendo console I didn't have growing up and I would love to have an easily accessible collection like this for it.
I would love a Famicom version with the original controllers (microphone and start & select buttons on both), Devil World, Akumajou Densetsu & FDS versions of Metroid, Zelda.
One thing to note is that Contra 1 has never been made available on Virtual Console in the west. I know the MSX port of Contra made it to the Japanese Virtual Console however. Weird considering Super C and Contra III are on the Virtual Console in the west. There must be some kind of weird issue preventing this but I am not sure what it could be.
Came out of nowhere ? Pat. Both Nintendo announced 3 -4 years ago that it was working on a small portable console, and wisdom tree made plans the same time, creating the Arkade all in one bible game inside a NES controller. Both were announced this week.
For those interested, here are the games on Wii Virtual Console that could have been on the NES Classic but weren't. - Pinball - Soccer - Solomon's Key - Wario's Woods - Ice Hockey - Tennis - Baseball - Urban Champion - Xevious - The Legend of Kage - Elevator Action - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Castlevania 3 - Mighty Bomb Jack - Ninja Gaiden 2 - Ninja Gaiden 3 - Milon's Secret Castle - Lode Runner - NES Open Tournament Golf - Mach Rider - Yoshi - Adventures of Lolo - Adventures of Lolo 2 - Star Soldier - Adventure Island - Donkey Kong Jr. Math - NES Play Action Football - Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels - Lunar Pool - Ninja JaJaMaru-kun - Volleyball - Double Dribble - Wrecking Crew - Zanac - Blades of Steel - Operation Wolf - Spelunker - Yoshi's Cookie - River City Ransom - Double Dragon 1 - Renegade - Sky Kid - City Connection - Bio Miracle Bokette Upa - Dig Dug - Clu Clu Land - Mega Man - Mega Man 3 - Mega Man 4 - Mega Man 5 - Super Dodge Ball - Life Force - Crash N the Boys: Street Challenge - A Boy and his Blob - Shadow of the Ninja - Uforia: The Saga - S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team - Faxanadu - Burger Time The Wii U added some games, but I don't know if these would work with the Wii's architecture. - Mega Man 6 - Bases Loaded - Gargoyle's Quest 2 - Duck Hunt - Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight - Mappy Land - Earthbound Beginnings - Blaster Master - Vs.Excitebike - Stinger - The Adventures of Bayou Billy - Hogan's Alley - Wild Gunman - Double Dragon 3 - Dig Dug 3 - Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll - Baseball Simulator 1.000
Honestly, I'd only add a handful of games. Mega Man 3, River City Ransom, Double Dribble, Ice Hockey, Baseball, Pinball, Dig Dug, Tennis, and Soccer. I'd also throw in Earthbound Beginnings even though it was never released on the NES officially, to make it an even 40 games.
I've noticed that a LOT of the games on here are games that were available on the Playchoice-10. Even the third party games, like Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, had PC10 releases.
I without a doubt if I can find it will be getting it this Christmas season. As for the device itself, my only possible complain is, I would have liked it to have an SD card slot for ROMs that weren't already there or homebrew titles, but I am perfectly fine with the list they have pieced together for the built in games.
I think this is the perfect thing for new gamers. My roommate and her daughter both wanted to try out gaming but are intimidated by my ps4 controller and don't want to go out and buy a wii in case they don't really like it, so I think this with its variety is perfect for them. For me it's definitely nostalgia, can't wait to play the smb games with them and relive all those first time experiemces with them, plus there's a good amount I've never played. Everyone I knew, me included, never got single player games, so there's like 13-15 on that list which I've never touched, so sweet for me even if they don't like it.
Really looking forward to this. I can already see a possible SNES Classic Edition being made at some point. Collecting old games is something I'd love to do but can't afford to so this is the next best thing
I know the connectors are that of the Wii-motes and all, so I'm just curious; do they sell those Wii-connectors-to-USB converters? Like they do with console gamepad connectors for emulation? That would be so awesome! Playing on an emulator more often than not, I don't know, a game just can't keep my attention all that long usually. It's just not the same. A gamepad would change that I'm sure! (PLUS I could use it for GameBoy/Color games, too!) I hope the people who already make such converters will make some of these!
You know they have USB versions of classic controllers on Amazon right? For $12 you can get a NES and SNES USB gamepad together that you can use with your emulators.
GK Chase Sure, that's another option, but the USB adapter gives you a lot of versatility, can use it with the classic controller, classic controller pro, PDP and Hori gamecube style controllers, the upcoming NES classic controller, and any future controllers that use the Wiimote port. It's less attractive if you don't already own any of the classic controllers, but for Wii or Wii U owners (like myself) it's a wonderful option.
Yeah you could use all those things, but if you're playing emulators, you only need one gamepad. I have a $30 generic gamepad with as many buttons as PS4/Xbone controllers, definitely preferable to using any of my Wii or Wii U gamepads/controllers. If it saves you a couple bucks to get the adapter instead of a gamepad, then go for it. I just don't think it's the best option overall, especially if you don't already own any Wii gamepads. And of course since you mentioned the gamecube and classic NES controllers, I'll just reiterate that you can get USB versions of any console's controller.
I really wish they had added a feature where you could add more games somehow. Either an ethernet jack so you can plug it in and have access to the Wii virtual store or an SD card slot where you could buy more games in a bundle or something. I just really want more than 30. Second, Pat mentioned something similar to this as a Sega Genesis and Atari version similar to this. I must have missed the boat on hearing about these, can anyone clue me in on these? What they're called & where they're sold? Thanks in advance!
The HDMI port doesn't work on my TV. Will this console possibly have the Audio/Video capabilities? I'd hate to have to buy a new TV just for this console.
The NES was my first console (well, my father had an Intellivision). I still have it, signed by the Joueur du Grenier (French AVGN). I will definitely buy this mini NES so my 2-years twin daughters will be able to play those fantastic games I played but on a recent screen. The games choice is just amazing. To enter the video games world, it's perfect! Really impatient to enjoy a Mario 3 game with my daughters!
I love how Pat mentions the "Little Gameboy" thing. You can buy fake gameboy colors on AlieExpress for less than 30 bucks which have 30 built in games and actually take GB and GBC cartridges. It's called the GB Boy Colour. I've been using one for ages and it works perfectly. Even has a backlight and a better screen than the original gameboy.
I have many original retro consoles, real carts, flash carts, clones, knock-offs, and have built several of my own Pi-based systems. I never had an actual NES as a kid, so it was never "my system", so I've never felt the need to pick up and actual NES. But I will totally be buying one of these for myself.
I agree Pat even though im a retro gamer I will by this for entertainment at the house for all my other fellow 30 Somethings who want to relive our childhood
I wonder if it is pulling from the Wii virtual console library, because it's larger than the current E Shop, or the E Shop. would be awesome if you can get gameboy games on download as well.
As much as I hate to say it, I think the reason this is coming out now is because Iwata passed and now with Kimishima, the company has been doing a lot of restructuring and changing the focus of the brand to better keep with the times. Nothing but respect for Iwata, he brought the company great success at times, especially with the DS and Wii, but he also seemed to have trouble bringing a modern vision to the company in his later years. While the decision to enter into the mobile market was ultimately made under his leadership, he was very hesitant (or stubborn) and resisted that move until shortly before his death. Under Kimishima, it seems Nintendo is finally getting with the times and it's already paying off for them.
Price point is right on target. The plan to use same ports was also. Game selection is very good as well. I think the only thing in my opinion that they missed on this one was somehow the ability to either plug in the carts you already own, or purchase and download other titles onto a hard drive.
I think I know the reason why the original Contra isn't on there, but it raises more questions than it answers. See Contra never came to the Virtual Console because in Japan the game outsourced the work of it's Famicom cutscenes to a third party. Konami didn't want to pay that team any money to have the game on the VC, and they didn't want to alter the content. Thus Japan doesn't get the game, the west doesn't get it's version (despite not having the cutscenes) and thus neither does this new NES. Actually I'm more surprised that Castlevania II Simon's Quest is on there but not Castlevania III Dracula's Curse since Simon's Quest is such a deviation from the original requiring a walk-through but Dracula's Curse is more like the original. Largely they needed to stop a 30 games for some reason, so they made a good cross-section of the best selling and most influencial games.
That makes sense, they do that with the Atari every year. But I do think that Nintendo missed an opportunity for more sales by not having a way to download more games from the eshop... but I guess then it competes directly with the Wii U. Then again, it already is competing with it because speculation is that it will outsell the Wii U over the holidays. They probably couldn't do this with the N64 however because at most the Virtual Console has only ever had about a dozen or so N64 games.
I think the mini NES is a great idea and it will probably sell well at first, but it can only play the 30 games that come on it and nothing else. I wont be surprised when its excitement drops off quickly and its price drops by half within a few months and used consoles begin flooding retro shops.
Wow, I thought I was the only one thinking about what will happen after the hype is gone...I agree 100 percent with your comments about retro shops. You'll be able to get them for uber cheap in say, what , less than 5 months?
I'm assuming its going to depreciate in value at the same rate current gen games do today. Most current gen games drop in price relatively fast within a couple months for new and used copies especially online. Along with flash sales that decrease the price even more, as the new Doom came out in early May its already been featured on several Amazon flash sales for as low as $24.99 for a brand new copy within 2 months of release. Since I highly doubt Nintendo is going to make a limited quantity of mini-NES consoles it wont retain its $60 price tag value for long after the initial holiday demand. I also don't think in the current market it will retain many consumers attention for very long either even though retro games are all the rage today and it has a great selection of games, it is just a glorified emulator.
When it comes to how Nintendo might have noticed how much retro can sell, I want to point out two things. 1. Shovel Knight Amiibo 2.The reaction to the Smash WiiU roster
Its for me, in scandinavia original games and NES console's is very expensive and rare to find in the "wild". This is a nice way to get the retro feel.
Aside from the lack of a cartridge slot, is it real NES hardware inside or one of those Nintendo on a Chip type consoles? If it's the former then were someone to start modding top loading cartridge slots into them then I would totally buy one.
an SNES version would... omg PLEASSE
Yes! Also would love to have a n64 version. Just imagine having super mario 64 and Mario kart 64 in hd!
Yes I need A Link To The Past!
NES Mini-GC Mini, fuck the Wii. But not the Wii U :)
Me, too! I think the inclusion of Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island, as well as Kirby's Superstar, EarthBound, F-Zero, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG and Star Fox in addition to Zelda 3 would be great!
Justin Hill Great list!
I am 100% going to buy this for me and my kids who are 6 & 7. I was born in 1980 and I was an only child with a single mother so I had video games my whole life. I'm sure you have, but have you heard of emulators? You can play NES games on a computer! (And just about any device nowadays, though a smartphone isn't recommended due touch screen controls not being all that handy.)
+ahums16 Yeah, I don't currently own a computer and there's something about a controller that I just like better anyway.
rojoshow13
Ah, sorry about that. I agree entirely, I'd LOVE for them to come out with a USB adapter specifically for this NES gamepad (some people or small companies or something have made them for many consoles, so you can use original controllers for emulation and stuff).
I hope that this is really popular and sells well... so that we have a chance of getting a Snes Classic as well!
its on track to out sell the WiiU.
I totally agree! For people who aren't hardcore collectors both of those would be great. May be even an N64 if the game quality is right. I have an original SNES and don't get me wrong it's beautiful but there are so many issues
+GeekYoshi nice man😊
+GeekYoshi you going to get this?
Just pre-ordered mine from Nintendo Store :D *starts counting down the days until November*
Nintendo better be able to keep this in stock during the holiday season, as it could very well be one of the most sought after gifts to find.
They most likely won't. Pre-order while/when you can.
I'm betting on shortages and Black Friday fights over these. Sad.
i just hope this doenst end like amiibos with the scalpers
+Daniel Requena Everything ends up scalpers
i don't think it will at least certainly not in the long run because they will re release just like with the amiibos
Best part was the ending. I would love Nintendo to make one for the GBA, SNES, and N64.
SNES & N64 yes. GBA no.
+Zach “ZachIglesias99” Iglesias n64 is dog shit
i kind of agree but the zelda and mario games are good.
GBA is not as expensive.
But would be neat to see a mix of GB/GBA
As long as its mainly the first party games
N64 carts aren't easily emulated...
I know it's pointless but my list would be something like this:
• Balloon Fight
• Battletoads
• Blades of steel
• Bubble Bobble
• Bucky O' Hare
• Castlevania
• Castlevania III
• Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
• Double Dragon II: The Revenge
• Dragon Quest III
• Duck Tales
• Dr. Mario
• Excitebike
• Final Fantasy II
• Ghosts'N Goblins
• Kid Icarus
• Kirby's Adventure
• Mega Man
• Mega Man 2
• Metroid
• Ninja Gaiden
• Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
• StarTropics
• Contra
• Super Mario Bros.
• Super Mario Bros. 3
• R.C. Pro Am
• Tecmo Super Bowl
• The Legend of Zelda
• Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
No Blaster Master!?
*Get the fuck out of my sight.*
They would've sold millions but they didn't release millions.
The only time I've ever seen them is when they're priced at $150 to $200 online. It's ridiculous
Bummer that Nintendo didn't add a top loading game slot to complement this release.
Because pirates.
Nintendo can't make Any NES original hardware or NES carts.
they copied the atari flashback
Charger Master nope, HD 8 bit .
Atari Flashback II had an Atari-on-a-chip, and could actually play real cartridges with a modification.
3 stars for Ghost and Goblins is too harsh. To me it's somewhere around 3,5 and 4.
Genesis and SNES were superior ports.
I love Ghosts N Goblins (one of my favorites) so I feel you but 3 stars is fair when you take into account its design flaws.
"Genesis and SNES were superior ports."
Not even close.
AN SNES VERSION!!! That would be awesome!
It's taken me this time to realise that you are saying SNES as S.N.E.S which is why you put 'An'. It the UK we all pronounced it as it looks... snes
That would be hot.
Mini Mort 2 I'll allow that, simply because you're in another country. I will not stand for it here though. "Ess En Ee Ess", "Super Nintendo", and "Super En Ee Ess" are acceptable, but not "sness".
My pronunciation and opinions are law! ;-)
I agree! Every time I hear someone say 'sness' I say 'bless you' and offer them a tissue.
and they were scalped....
River City Ransom would have been a nice inclusion (same with Little Samson), but they're going more for games that the average joe knows, not dire-hards
A lot of people know Little Samson.
The target audience for this product would generally not be familiar with a game like Little Samson.
efwefwef Ah my bad.
What was it that happened last year that made Nintendo want to market retro games to mainstream audiences?
3 words Pat: SUPER MARIO MAKER
Ehhh, but that wasn't really an indication of more interest. They've been re-releasing and marketing retro titles on their consoles going back to the GBA.
Maybe it's me, I''ve purchased 60+ games on the Virtual Console since I got a Wii last fall. :P
I think it's because everyone likes the older games more.
the thing is to, theres no reason why there couldn't be an SD card slot (or DS Slot, since they have 1000's of them already) under the flap in the front, then later release a basically a DS game that will give you more games at another 30. if next summer they released, another 15 games at 30 using the tech and parts they already have from the DS to make a cart to fit in the thing, i have no doubt that would sell as well.
If they did a snes version I'd get it
I bet if this is popular we may see a SNES version, that would be cool.
If this reaches success, we might see it
I'd rather see an upgraded version of the NES mini with a cartridge slot before we see a SNES version with only built-in games again. Either way hopefully the product is successful so they keep making consoles like this in the future.
they could combine it with an amiibo type idea. THey did it with flash cards before either. It doesn't have to be a cart. Just some storage and something that gives you the game. But I don't think that's how these things work. It's a one time purchase type thing.
i dunno. you could easily pick up an actual snes for 50$, nintendo will probably sell it for 80$
What's this NES guidebook? Ive never heard Pat mention it before.
If there was an N64 version, it would go gangbusters.
But it NEEDS to have Rare games!
I, the Nintendo fan That's true. What a shame.
thejobloshow Hopefully if it ever comes to life, Nintendo and Microsoft can make a good deal about it.
the only thing is if they made a N64 version it would probably only have 2-3 games from Rare just because it's a 3rd party company now but im sure microsoft would play nice with a couple games,
We'd most likely be able to get Banjo Kazooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Nintendo is going to make such a rebound. already Pokemon go raised stocks. this coming and soon to come the NX. huge year from this point
Yes, indeed. 💰💰💰
PKMN Go and this may just make up for there shit consoles.
No$talgia money
Saying that Nintendo's net worth is more than all of Sony isn't say a whole lot considering that Sony isn't doing all that well.
+Raymond The Crow they're also worth more than Yahoo, Netflix, and Tesla.
a good thing about this is that for the pricepoint it becomes a great christmas present for a younger person, i got given an old NES when i was maybe 3 or 4 ( around 1996/7) the games are simple enough for a youngster to get into and engaging enough to keep them (and older players) coming back periodically for a few years. the 3ds ports of pokemon r/b/y showed how well an older game can sell based on the nostalgia and/or reputation of the title while being near enough unchanged
I wonder if they'll put out a Japanese Famicom version...either for Japan or in the U.S. later on with a different set of games if this sells.
No.
Nintendo has LOST the ability to make original NES hardware.
Nintendo could do something like "mini carts" that are roms on an SD card.
nope, SD cards and USB not secure.
you are seriously overthinking it, its a plug n play , rarely do those have more than 30 games and its likely that they will have a volume 2 down the line. if you like games and Nintendo get this. I still am :)
Samson ? is that a Wisdom Tree game ? if it is . Wisdom Tree is making its own NES console to play bible games.
Nintendo already confirmed that there will be no expansion to this system, what you buy is what you get.
I think it's brilliant considering retro is cool again, the 80's is cool again. You've got genres of music now that mimic 80's synths, you've got retro chiptune music and you've of coarse got the new games that imitate the retro pixel-art style. I think it's really the perfect time to release something like this.
They should make a Gameboy version in the future
Gameboy was on the gamecube.
+Mark Plott Game Boy...
That's a great idea! I didn't think of that initially.
For Tecmo Super Bowl maybe they couldn't re release it because of the NFL license that EA has.
Probably, has Tecmo ever released a rom of Super Bowl where they removed all of the names and licensed graphics like they did with the original Tecmo Bowl?
Yes, it's called Tecmo Bowl.
Tecmo Bowl sold more than Tecmo Superbowl and is a little easier to find on the NES. I'm not talking about NOW, but back in the day.
Fair enough. Honestly, I am amazed at the 3rd party support for this product. Kudos to Nintendo for going the extra mile and securing a title like Tecmo Bowl when they could have mailed it in by using their own (inferior) title, Play Action Football.
+Pat the NES Punk yeah but who cares? This thing isn't targeted towards gamers from the past it's targeted towards gamers today
Good point man.
With all the money nintendo is making off of Pokemon Go they could have at least put a cartridge slot on the NES mini. I mean come on they put one on the Genesis "flashback".
Nintendo can't make Any original hardware or carts.
+Mark Plott wanted to type : can't make any original NES hardware or NES carts.
They might feel it more profitable to sell one without cartridge every year like with the Atari Flashback.
Amid all the politics and stress in the world you two are always my much needed respite.
Ian's comments always make these videos so enjoyable😂
wonder which stores will be selling them? And how many scalpers are going to buy them in mass to screw everyone else over? Too bad Contra 1 & 2 is not on the list of games.
That's my only worry. I really hope Nintendo ships enough to accommodate anyone who wants to buy this, and doesn't pull another Amiibo mishap. The scumbag resellers will be all over this if they don't.
But I can see these being available pretty much anywhere, retail wise.
Yeah my bad, I unfortunately scanned the list for Contra 2 instead of Super C.
Maybe I should also point out neither Tertis games is available.
+Ninkyo893 Hopefully we can all pre-order. Going to GameStop tomorrow and see if they are offering pre-order.
But no Double Dragon... :-(
This could be the best idea NIntendo has had for years. Just wish they had more games (or that we could add games?) They have essentially unlimited storage so. Would have loved to have Tecmo world cup soccer and the other Tecmo games on here.
Nintendo had nothing to do with poekmon go o_o
Yes and no. Niantic is owned by nintendo if i'm not mistaken. I believe they are a subsidiary of nintendo. That's why their stock price rose when pokemon go hit it big.
They're not owned by Nintendo.
Neither is Castlevania, Super C, Mega Man 2, and Ninja Gaiden included in this mini nes.
^Wut. All 4 of those games are on there.
would love a gameboy version
I thought the gamecube had a GB player ?
+Mark Plott there was the super game boy for snes as well, for original GB games at least
Mark Plott it did
Doenload the MyBoy app to your phone if you gave an Android. Its the exact same thing.
+Clutch Cargo I hate using my screen as a button... don't feel or respond right
You asked in the video Pat what suddenly made Nintendo do refocus on its retro division, and I think I have the answer.
I enjoyed Pat channeling his inner "Nintendo Age" in his previous Punk video for this.
Hey guys I just notes something. So far Nintendo is only releasing The NES Classic Edition to the US and UK market but as of now I don't see ANY Japanese "Famicom Classic Edition" for Japan at all?
no, Japanese interest. they have VC and they love it. takes up no space at all.
No plans at this time.
I'm wondering if the controller options will be wired or wireless or both.
IT WAS THE RELEASE OF THE ULTIMATE NES GUIDE
:O
Pre-order ordered
Guide + Everdrive = Why do I still have my 100 carts?
Came out of nowhere ? Pat. Both Nintendo announced 3 -4 years ago that it was working on a small portable console, and wisdom tree made plans the same time, creating the Arkade all in one bible game inside a NES controller. Both were announced this week.
For those interested, here are the games on Wii Virtual Console that could have been on the NES Classic but weren't.
- Pinball
- Soccer
- Solomon's Key

- Mappy Land
- Earthbound Beginnings

- Stinger
- The Adventures of Bayou Billy
- Hogan's Alley
- Wild Gunman
- Double Dragon 3
- Dig Dug 3
- Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll
- Baseball Simulator 1.000
Yeah, include all of that and jack up the price to like $200, that would work...
Mario Bros. (the arcade game), Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Balloon Fight, are all on there.
I've noticed that a LOT of the games on here are games that were available on the Playchoice-10. Even the third party games, like Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, had PC10 releases.
Hi Pat, what NES flash cart does Ian have that he recommends?
Everyone I knew, me included, never got single player games, so there's like 13-15 on that list which I've never touched, so sweet for me even if they don't like it.
why don't add a ds/3ds cartridge slot? so you can play multiple games at home?
Really looking forward to this. I can already see a possible SNES Classic Edition being made at some point. Collecting old games is something I'd love to do but can't afford to so this is the next best thing
I know the connectors are that of the Wii-motes and all, so I'm just curious; do they sell those Wii-connectors-to-USB converters? Like they do with console gamepad connectors for emulation? That would be so awesome! Playing on an emulator more often than not, I don't know, a game just can't keep my attention all that long usually. It's just not the same. A gamepad would change that I'm sure! (PLUS I could use it for GameBoy/Color games, too!)
I hope the people who already make such converters will make some of these!
Yes. google "Wii Classic controller to USB adapter"
jmanstiss
YESSS THANK YOU!! Haha, this'll be awesome! :)
Just curious, will this be something that HAS TO BE preordered to have a chance to get it on the release date?
What about Duck Hunt!!! Will that also be available for separate purchase with the handgun???
I really wish they had added a feature where you could add more games somehow. Either an ethernet jack so you can plug it in and have access to the Wii virtual store or an SD card slot where you could buy more games in a bundle or something. I just really want more than 30.
Second, Pat mentioned something similar to this as a Sega Genesis and Atari version similar to this. I must have missed the boat on hearing about these, can anyone clue me in on these? What they're called & where they're sold?
Thanks in advance!
was waiting for pat to talk about this for days!
I'm bummed that it won't have internet connectivity to expand the library on it, but that won't stop me from getting it.
I assume there's no way to connect the pad to PC?
Even though I have most of those games I gotta have it. So adorable looking and just looking at it brings me back in time.
Struggling to find this for the UK - either there's not a scheduled EU release or Nintendo are only selling direct.
Totally agree about Ice Climber and the surprising absence of Contra...
I suspect the NES mini will have some sharpening and HD upscaling, well have to wait and see.
I have many original retro consoles, real carts, flash carts, clones, knock-offs, and have built several of my own Pi-based systems. I never had an actual NES as a kid, so it was never "my system", so I've never felt the need to pick up and actual NES. But I will totally be buying one of these for myself.
My question; how would the japanese famicon version look?
I agree Pat even though im a retro gamer I will by this for entertainment at the house for all my other fellow 30 Somethings who want to relive our childhood
Does this still take the original cartridges as well as the pre loaded games? The Sega Genesis preloaded did. (from atgames)
I think the only thing in my opinion that they missed on this one was somehow the ability to either plug in the carts you already own, or purchase and download other titles onto a hard drive.
my mom asked me about this for my dad, and neither of them know anything about gaming. this thing will go over so well. I'm happy for nintendo.
Since it has controller ports that match the Wii mote, I wonder if the Wii pro controller will work on it
I think I know the reason why the original Contra isn't on there, but it raises more questions than it answers.
Maybe they will do another run and release a updated version with more games in the future?
No media because piracy.
So what they'll do is release a second version with 30 different games probably. That or a SNES mini
Keegan Andersson very likely.
When it comes to how Nintendo might have noticed how much retro can sell, I want to point out two things. 1. Shovel Knight Amiibo 2.The reaction to the Smash WiiU roster
Hope you guys are prepared to make a video about scalpers buying up as many of these and the controllers as they can and reselling them for more.
I have an actual Nes, but there is no way I'm passing this deal up. 30 games for $60 bucks, and they are actually good games!!!!
I'm surprised it doesn't have wifi and e-shop for the rest of the nes store library
some stores are taking pre orders already not game stop but local stores that have orders in
will it connect online for multipler player or be able to download additional games?
I going to buy one. But where to pick one up at?
Its for me, in scandinavia original games and NES console's is very expensive and rare to find in the "wild". This is a nice way to get the retro feel.
Great update pat and Ian thank you for this video. Definitely going to buy one of these especially after this video
Aside from the lack of a cartridge slot, is it real NES hardware inside or one of those Nintendo on a Chip type consoles? If it's the former then were someone to start modding top loading cartridge slots into them then I would totally buy one.
I have the whole NES library in a folder on my gaming PC, and I'll still be picking this up day 1.
I'm a collector who doesn't have a NES. For me this is way easier than getting one, I'm completely sold.
I wonder if it's a SOC or they're using modern era accurate hardware on the board (being cheaper than original chips?).
System on chip. Safer no piracy.
I'm actually a bit surprised they included Tecmo Bowl, which is one of my favorites. Will definitely be getting this.
