- In this video, I discuss Bear Grylls stepping down as the UK Chief Scout. As one of the most recognizable faces in the scouting community, his departure raises important questions. Do UK Scouts still need a Chief Scout, or can ambassadors fill this leadership role effectively? The new titles boggle my mind. Why did the UK step away from the traditional titles such as Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Commissioner, and the like?
Peter Duncan was brought in specifically ahead of the centenary because the focus then was to recruit more volunteers. Peter Duncan appealed to people of the generation who remembered and admired him on Blue Peter. He paved the way for Bear Grylls, whose appeal was to the generation of young people ready to become Scouts. What is the focus now? Perhaps to reach even younger members to grow the Squirrels section. Bluey?!! Or maybe to reach out to even more Brits that may not think Scouting is for them. Girlguiding already reaches out to females, so what other groups need more representation in Scouting?
If there is one, and I am not entirely sure there should be, then it should be someone who the young people can relate to, and so probably someone I have never heard of!
I agree, what what age/section would you aimed for? As beavers/squirrels knowledge of famous people is different compared to the scouts/explorers
@@bigmaninthewoods. I would aim at Squirrels and Beavers. The reason being is that their parents would also be familiar with the 'celebrity' and would possibly also be inspired to join as well. It's got to be someone young and dynamic.
I think the new figurehead should be someone Scout aged YP will recognise. But also the parents of Squirrel and beaver age kids
Although prehaps the new patron could be combined with the ceremonial CS.
Princess Kate would be ideal but obviously that depends on her ongoing health issues
You raise a very good point here.
The role of Chief Scout in the UK has gradually been diminished over a long period of time with Bear Grylls as you say turning the role into a type of PR role and having little to no say in the running of the organisation.
As you also say even that role has been divided out amongst a team of celebrity volunteers.
As the day to day running of the organisation is being headed up by a Chief Commissioner/Chief Volunteer then really that person should effectively should fill the role of Chief Scout leaving the celebrity team to be the face of Scouting.
So now the question is do we retain the job title of Chief Scout or just forget about it?
Here in Malta there are two Scouting organisations, Scout Association Malta (WOSM) and Baden Powell Scouts Malta (WFIS), I have been part of both.
SAM have a Chief Commissioner, I never met that person.
BPSM have a Chief Scout and interestingly a woman! I know her quite well, a fine natural leader and she is an active Scouter too. It’s a smaller organisation so the top echelons are much more hands on.
If the UK abandon the job title of Chief Scout it will be a pity but in keeping with the gradual erosion of traditions.
It could be said that Bear Grylls has effectively killed off the role… ⁉️

In a Nutshell, the new UK role titles are :-
Group Scout Leader -> Group Lead
Volunteer
Section Leader -> Section Team
Leader
Assistant Section Leader -> Section
Team Member
Section Assistant -> Section Team
Member
Occasional Helper -> Non Member - Needs Disclosure
But remember “locally” in your group for example , you can call yourself what you want. So you can still call yourself a Scout Leader.
I am not convinced that we need a new Chief Scout.

I personally think that Bear Grylls is great for scouting, whether we need a new chief scout with the scout ambassadors, not sure, somebody for the young people to look up to maybe because they do like an inspirational figurehead
