From Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to Scott Pilgrim, Edgar Wright has directed some fun movies. His use of music, sound, action and editing are second to none. Today, we'll look at his 2017 film Baby Driver and how Edgar Wright used clever costume design to color code his character.

Baby Driver is such a solid, fun, artful film. It’s the kind of film that almost feels like it’s a mixture of tropes from the 90s and 2000s elevated
Baby driver is almost a masterpiece of a film
It’s the dialogue and really exaggerated characters that I dig
The editing on his Scott Pilgrim was even better . There's a reason why it's a cult classic.
contrarian opinion: the movie bugs me. It feels so forced, as if everyone was having a bad day and tried extra hard to be enthusiastic even though they hated it. Or like a British actor doing an American accent--It technically works but there is so much effort behind every syllable that the character never seems relaxed even during scenes they should be relaxed in (watch Christian Bale and Henry Cavill movies for examples). if nothing else, I feel stressed when I watch it. Anyone that has had some anxiety issues knows when their body is carrying physical stress and when it isn't, and the whole time I watch Baby Driver, I feel stress in my joints and in my head. TMI dump over and out
Soooooo…basically Hudson Hawk? 😂
Another nice visual touch: Buddy wearing blue marks him as a cool, calm and collected character, but Darling warns about what can happen "when Buddy sees red". At the end of the movie, when Buddy is in a homicidal rage, he is bathed in red light - we are seeing red right along with him.
I love that Visual Gem too 🔥🤙🏾
Can you answer in more detail?
Who the fuck is Buddy?
Ooooh that's so interesting!
And when Darling dies, he reloads and faces towards the brake light of the car, showing that he sees red.
Baby also wears his t-shirts and jeans 50s style. No v-necks, no baggy pants, so both him and Debra are old school stylish. Coz its a classical love story. Boy meets girl, he is a criminal with a golden heart and love for cars, she is innocent and kinda reminds him of his lost mother.
"Debora that loves her Baby and brings him coffee at a diner" also screams 50s. As well as the fact that he never calls her on her cell phone, but rather on the diner phone, which also puts us back in the old days
Something always felt different about baby driver. This could definitely be part of it.
I think it’s also the way music is integrated into every part of the movie so effectively and meaningfully. The plot, the characters, even the action choreography are all built around music. Watching the movie feels like listening to a great song.
@@some_doofus it feels like watching a shite movie. Next time you listen to a song I’ll crack your head with an oar to the beat and you’ll probably thank me for it you rube.
Another reason why Baby wears plain and b&w clothes: The side characters are proud of their criminal life, they see themselves as rebels or kings, so they literally wear it on their sleeve. Baby wants to get out, he doesn't accept that life, so he stands out by being muted and generic in comparison.
This was almost directly said in the video, but good on ya! 🤣
Love an old fashioned color theory analysis. Just about every other aspect of this film has been discussed, unsurprisingly, except this
I know. Because I love talking about popular movies and classic movies, it sometimes feels like half my job is just scouring the internet for that one story or interview that somehow hasn’t been talked about to death already. But. It’s a fun challenge.
-Danny
Daniel Netzel and Ryan Chung have decent videos on Baby Driver's color theory as well if you are searching for more!
The first time I saw Pilgrim vs the World , my world expanded quite a bit.
Such an experience.
I had the same experience with it
Edgar Wright is simply a genius in modern filmmaking!!!
Watching Quantumania just had me wishing that he directed the Ant-Man trilogy!
I’ve been thinking about that a lot this week, too. That would’ve been something to behold.
None of the modern directors that worth their salt would go direct a marvel movie anymore because Marvel micromanages everything. Most of the films are pre-visualized before a director even signs to a project.
And then we are wondering why Marvel movies get worse evreytime.
@@fotisxevgenis marvel keeps everything bland cause they wanna be able to change as much as possible it’s so dumb. Avatar is a beautiful example of what happens when you finalise Cgi first, it’s allows better directing
Quantumania is one of the worst films this year, so badly wtitten it’s headache inducing
@@gabym.t6635 wtitten
He wears a white shirt when he's with his adoptive father. He only wears the black and white jacket when he's on the job, because he's unsure if he wants to be there.
There's so much effort put into the presentation of your videos. You don't only write great scripts, but you really put work into every aspect of the edit
Thank you. Sincerely. The channel is definitely a major creative outlet for me.
@@CinemaStix hey man just wanted to say love the work!!! keep it up broski lol

Baby Driver is one of my favorite movies of all time. After watching this movie for the first time, I thought everything was perfect. The opening scene in my opinion is one of the best scenes of the 2010s. I used to think I was Baby because I listen to different kinds of music a lot growing up in high school. It's a movie I could watch over and over again that I'd never get tired of it. Thank you for making this video! It meant a lot to me.
Also like how when hes in the car he even dances with the music.
Omg someone else, I never actually thought about it why, but I've seen this movie +7 times. Favorite movie of all time
Jesus; see other movies for your own sake. God forbid you utter these words in public.
@@mickjagger4707 As someone who grew up in the 80s, we appreciated that every one of us was aware that we have moments of absolute cringe, but that was OK, and we could just enjoy the other guy having his moment, knowing that ours was coming soon, and we would likewise be absolved. So we were free to simply enjoy things and not worry about what other people thought of it, because there is no prescription for joy, other than the knowledge that perpetual cynicism is just dying in advance.
@@cf453 waffle on as much as you want to. You sound so self congratulatory for your own perceived individualism and righteous ethos’s. The movie sucked the music was so forced. I shouldn’t have made a disparaging comment like I did but it doesn’t make me wrong.
Honestly need more movies like baby driver. Its a nice well made movie with a meaningful ending. Not every movie has to be a safe and half assed action movie thats desperately trying to setup a sequal.
My absolute favourite scene is the trial at the end, where we see that his actions have consequences, but that his kind actions earn him some leniency. It was very refreshing in a genre where the ambiguous hero often gets away scot-free
@@liam6nugget yup the average hero can run through a crowded mall shooting at a bad guy with all the evidence being "i can feel it" and be called a hero at the end.
Huh? They are doing a sequel to baby driver, lol. And what about this film is "unsafe"?
I absolutely love Baby Driver, 5 out of 5 stars for me, but....your argument is just odd.
it sure would be nice to have one hollywood film, JUST ONE, ok, maybe two, that wasn't a damned gun commercial or a tattoo, body mutilation promotion. "hollywood" is supposed to be sooooooo liberal yet their films show us guns and violence are the only solutions to our problems and that mutilating and scarring your body is "cool" when nothing could be further from the truth.
idiots and morons have taken over human society. people are so stupid to think the govt has the most control over us when our choices of entertainment and our employers have more control and influence over our lives than anything else. people are such brainwashed, mindless, gullible, easily corrupted conformists. humanmity doesn't think anymore - IT BLINDLY FOLLOWS!
humanity doesn't think - it reacts to buzz words and slogans designed by marketers and corporations to manipulate and control us. and we're too stupid to figure this out. its taken over 6000 years but our ruling elite have finally succeeded in turning humanity into a slave species. how's it feel to be a slave and being too stupid to even know it?
It’s just not good, grab a friend tell him this your favorite movie watch it and die inside
Without looking too deeply into it, people forget that cinema is simply moving photographs. Photography is visual art, and any excuse to make that picture more beautiful, vibrant, or interesting is not wasted in this medium. The cinematographer is just as important as the director, writer, or any other key player in this collaboration. When it all comes together, you have a masterpiece.

Thank you, I can’t find anything on Thea Tyler and Dinah Smith outside of the Spotify album. Do you know anything else about it?
I watched Spaced recently, it's a tv series with two seasons and the first thing Wright directed. It's so interesting how they all used that show as a sounding board for whacky ideas, and a safe space to try fun techniques, references and tropes, and see what worked and what didn't. The first episode is a good example of this, because the choice to do a montage when it could have been a two minute conversation is both very extra and ultimately not effective, but he tried it anyway. Totally recommend to someone who has seen all of his other works and is into the humble beginnings of their fave artists
I always had trouble hearing English so colour was always what I would first notice about a movie.
I don't know how to read the verbal conflict between these two character but their always wearing conflicting colours (red and blue/ patterns and plains). It's why I immediately fell in love with something like Moonlight and Fight Club
So Baby Driver was amazing. It was so much all at once. The fashion style was a first for me and I only noticed it now that you mention it.
Thank you do much for the nice lense. I'll definitely be looking at all the new stuff I've learnt the next time I watch Baby Driver
Baby Driver is one of those movies where you can tell it was an art project first a product second.
Dude put his blood, sweat, and tears into every frame and it shows.
Big misfire
Opening of your video clicked something in my head as an animator and character artist for the first time, Wright's characters are like caricatures or cartoons (also considering adaptation of Scott Pilgrim it makes sense) and just like how those deal with simple and contrasting features in their design, here the color and clothing seems to be carrying that role heavily, just like how you would design a character having their distinct identities at display by how they dress. I never looked at this movie specifically with such a POV. Great video .
this channel is such a gem

Baby Driver was a rich tapestry of movie tropes, art, brilliant stunts, awesome music, a sea of colour and beautiful shots …… There’s just so much to dissect.

still one of my favorites, gotta rewatch it again. love your editing btw especially how well you use music in this!
Definitely! And thank you :) The music stuff was a bit of an experiment. But it seemed necessary for a movie like this. And I think it worked out pretty well in the end.

Just rewatched Baby Driver tonight!!! Absolutely Awesome movie.
Cool, love how the colors focus the center and makes the person in the scene grasp the attention of the aduience, Like visual language or environmental storytelling, a warning w/o a label.
Literally just seeing the actors gives me chills
There is no director working today with as unique a visual style as Edgar Wright, and I've been a fan for years.
Damien Chazelle, Wes Anderson
@stanquach380 I'll let you have Wes Anderson, but I don't think Chazelle is quite the same level. He uses some of the same techniques as Wright, and his films are really colorful, but not quite to the same effect as Wright. The way Wright uses camera moves and editing to make and sell jokes on their own is unparalleled.
@@TheNoviceVillage I mean, Edgar Wright has more experience in directing than Chazelle, though. But the visual storytelling and cinematography in La La Land are better than anything Edgar Wright had done. It could be my taste, but Edgar sometimes focuses on style over substance a lot which's suitable for action-comedy films. However, Edgar Wright's filmography is still better than Chazelle's. Chazelle really let me down with his new film.
Except for Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Jean Pierre Jeunet, the Coen Brothers and many more...
this is the kind of shit that makes me go down director rabbit holes, movie after movie, wasting hour after hour.
THANK YOU
"Why does Edgar Wright even bother?" What a loaded question 😂 great video!
Thanks Dany boy haha
The vidéo is great ! Also for me colour goes wth character so the last argument of "sometimes it's to differenciate people" was supprising haha

Edgar Wright has got to be one of, if not the most brilliant director of the 90s and 2000s.

He's my most influential director and probably my personal favorite. He makes it all look so easy! On a grand scale, you don't need fancy tech or funding from a successful studio, you just need to be creative and passionate!
Baby driver is still my favorite movie to this day. I’ve seen it about 50 times now? I share it with everyone I know and they all love it too

The quote about Wright wanting people to be able to dress as his characters for halloween reminds me of the scene in the office where Ryan is dressed as BB's Jessie Pinkman. He simply wore a yellow zip-up hoodie and a beanie, jet he was instantly recognizable

I watched nearly this entire movie without sound whilst on an airplane. I had seen it before, but I was amazed at how much was related to me as the viewer simply through great direction, and the color stuck out so hard.
Nice analysis, very insightful. I haven't seen Baby driver yet-never felt it was my kind of film-but now I feel I have to.

The very, very first song? It’s called The Sly by Rossier. Though, it’s being played at roughly double speed to match the timing of the piano bit from the movie.

Edgar Wright is one of the most underrated directors of this decade
(almost) 6 years later and people still making video essays about this movie. Clearly Edgar did something right!
It's like imagine a director who's good at art and design, making every frame of the movie into a fantastic piece of colour and composition
The Halloween costume thing is such a gem of an idea. So brilliant, how else to make a character memorable enough than if people can create a costume out of it? Genius.
This is definitely one of the movies I've watched of all times.
Such a great film. Visually, aurally...spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically.
10:20:70 rule is a must.
Colours are important in life.
And in ART ... that represents life.
I love colours.
Thank you for sharing. :)
Edgar Wright is a gift. I only wish other directors could put the same person into their work.
Cautiously optimistic for Baby Driver 2!
With Ansel's abuse allegations? Fat chance tbh
@@krustomer Wasn't aware, that's unfortunate. Edgar Wright did mention he's finished the screenplay for 2, so we'll see if it materializes

Watching Spaced after seeing most of Edgar Wright’s movies, it’s easy to recognize the style way back then.
fantastic video danny, can honestly appreciate movies much more after watching your content. Whats the name of the song that starts at 1:50?
It’s called “Gloria Please” by Gloria Tells
I loved the twist of who the real antagonist was in this movie. The boldness from Jamie Foxx led me to believe he was the villain, but it was actually the ultramasculine Jon Hamm in this film. His girlfriend brought him balance and when she died, he was a dog let off the leash.
This video took the exact length it took to floss my teeth. Thx partner
Hehe, noice. That’s some good flossing.
Remains an absolute crime he didn't get to finish directing Ant-Man.
I love that Baby driver is becoming a modern classic
Beautiful
Color coding the fight scenes is great, I saw Every Frame a Painting highlight Jackie Chan doing this, especially in his Hong Kong movies.
I'm very glad you added the scene where Baby gets his glasses slapped off. Another banger.
Also if I may ask, what is the song around 2:00?
Haha, for sure.
And yeah! That’s ‘Gloria Please’ by Gloria Tells.

nice. gonna comb through it, earned some trust from this end haha . do you stumble across the music you find or is it from familiar artist? I'd probably never find that artist in the wild, pretty unknown
I loved the use of red in this film
"you've got red on you"
I'll try this movie again- I thought after the first 20 or so minutes it turned into every other movie-
Friend, how do you choose your music? It's exceptional soundtracking. Lays the perfect bed for your stellar essays. Well done.
Thank you! It’s one of my favorite parts of the edit. I dedicate a whole to finding tracks for each one. In short though, I just use a service. It’s got a bunch of great music on it, I filter things down, find what works. I try to make every one a little bit different when I can. Never use the same song twice.
Well done.
Colour Per Character.... Now thats something new
Thats Art & innovative
This discussion is more so about “color psychology” as opposed to “color theory”:
in which you would have talked about color schemes and palettes, complementary colors, Split analogous…essentially which colors work best with each other, including examples from the film of these color schemes.
Did not get what I was expecting, but hey…👍🏿
When the director is a director who likes making movies.
when color theory comes up first thing that comes to my mind isthe new "west side story" that movie was like a color theory lesson
I don't know how I didn't know this was an Edgar Wright joint. Explains why I love it so much. That and the fantastic cast. But a fantastic cast does not always a great movie make.
Baby is also dressed like Han Solo, one of the best pilots in the galaxy.
Another point that isn't talked about baby driver, but I think danger mouse helped picked the music.
Dang, is that right? Man’s a boss.
Sammo Hung understood the importance of colour in fight scenes, you can see it on display in most of his movies but maybe best in the Lucky Stars trilogy. The good guys always wore bright colours to contrast with the bad guys who were usually in dark suits.
Awesome how at 1:53 when he says “Wright” Baby turns right towards the word “right” just like how the movie scene matches the song lyrics lol
Black and white mixed in equal parts also makes grey which is how baby is in this story.
He does some bad things but is a good person at heart. Which leads to.the point you make about his T-Shirt qnd how it ends up being grey
Great vid man!. what was that song playing at the 1:00 mark?
This is bananas
The biggest movie sin of my life is watching various versions of this movies intro scene being "haha thats dope, but I dont like gangster or racing movies" until like 5 years later I realized from watching more scenes that theres way more to this movie. The colours, the music especially are way more detailed and interesting that I would have thought after the first 5 minutes.
