Climbed into a Dumpster here in Sydney, with great joy and much curiosity from passers-by to retrieve an ancient, and heavy as Neon sign transformer....Standard Electric Co,Hong Kong ⚡⚡⚡
Brings back memories of playing with a 12kv 60ma neon sign transformer when I was in high school. We used it for jacobs ladder and as primary for a spark-gap tesla coil. Still have the transformer, it was from the 40s or 50s.
Yep, hopefully one day MAAC will get its Transport Canada exemptions back. I've completely given up on TC actually recognizing that traditional line of sight RC aviation and Drone/FPV RPAS operations are two entirely different things. At least I recognized this back in 2017 when I started diversifying my content.
I built my own about 25 years ago. Used a Volkswagen Bug auto coil, fed through capacitors and a light dimmer. Still works great. If you need to make a lot of ozone, that'll do it. One thing I did was build it with a acrylic tube over the electrodes for safety, although it can be removed easily. With the open tube on, the sound is very loud. Put a cap over it and it quiets down.
Never seen a Jacob's Ladder inside a "glass tube" so don't know what you are referencing? There are plasma spheres, tubes and other shapes, but those are entirely different devices operating with higher frequency voltages in a sealed noble gas chamber.
could the enclosure be built with a say long glass jar and shorter leads? Or would this trap to much heat and adversely affect the system. Really enjoyed the video. I am a mechanical guy not a sparky and these types of videos are inspiring for me to try out some of the sparky fun builds.
You can make the rods as short as you wish so no issue there. Not sure how placing a glass jar over it would affect operation; but I too would be concerned with heat build up. I've seen some Jacob's ladders with clear plexiglass sleeves around them for safety reasons, but the base always has a gap to let air in and the top is open to let air out.
Is it possible for you to send me the file for the box you 3D printed? If not, at least the dimensions. I am making three of these for Christmas gifts and I do not have the transformers yet to measure them. I wanted to start printing out the boxes ahead of time.
Hey John I have the same transformer but don’t have a 3D printer. Was wondering if you could make me a box and if so the price. Not sure how to get my email to you except here on the tube comments not sure how safe that would be. But very interested in your design, let me know if not I understand.
Yep, don't ever give your email out on YT. You can contact me through my website ( rchelicopterfun.com ). I might consider this, but it depends on your location. I'm in Canada so anywhere within Canada is doable. US maybe. Anywhere else - negative. Anyway, we can discuss further if you are still interested through my website email.

Awesome dumpster find! 👍 Stay safe 🙂
That is too cool 😁👍👍

Nice! 🙂
I didn't know i needed this but now I do. Thankyou. I'll put it next to my unfinished R2D2 :)
A much easier and faster build than good ol R2 🙂
That's a great hobby lathe!
Yep, I've had that little Taig lathe for just over 20 years now and have enjoyed it immensely.
Another fun project ! Thank you. I miss the helicopter segments !!!

Pretty cool John 👍😁

Very cool!!! Enjoyed it very much!!!!! What about the types where the current would go up a glass tube???

@ultraporthos6884 Link to the two files (lid & case) is the description. Here's the link as well if that helps: www.e-junkie.com/i/1416f?card
