I purchased a faulty HP5342A frequency counter from eBay, its functions were erratic, sometimes working, sometimes not, I cleaned all of the card edge connectors which fixed most of its issues.
I then had to replace the sample rate pot on the front panel as it was broken, I found a pot that could be used on RS Components, BUT despite its value being marked as 1MOhm, it was actually only 775KOhm, so it caused another issue, the counter could not go into HOLD mode...
So I modified the A17 board to allow for the different pot value in order to get it working (I couldn't be bothered playing pot value roulette).

I wonder if there is a manufacturer's name on that pot. I would guess it was a Bourns device as they were at that time the industry standard for precision pots. They are still in business and may have something similar. it was probably a custom order from HP for that particular run of equipment. I have the earlier version of that counter the 5340A which is a 19 inch rack mount design. You might find it interesting to know that in the 1984 HP catalog that the 5342A listed for $6040 USD or about $14000 USD in todays money. You could easily run the price up another 2 to 3 K in options. I don't know how that relates to UK pounds but it was still a good chunk of cash any way you look at it. ATB Doug.

Doug McArtin - if I can find the right pot I can always return to this and install it, the replacement which I have done is easily reversible, I would prefer to keep it original if possible.
